Just watched the Diablo3 gameplay video earlier and have a thought. For sure my first character is going to be the barbarian but there was one thing that didn't satisfy me - It is the RAW physical damage.
From previous blizzard info have shown that the more fire damage you get, the bigger the fire on the weapon would be. However, would the physical "animation" be more satisfying if there are more raw power on the item? If there is then that would be awesome.
Do you guys remember the thrill to use the WindForce bow back in diablo 2, as it have the highest physically damage. But the animation is just not there.
Hopefully blizzard will treat the physical power as one of those elements as well. (including special KO!!)
I personally would love to use "pure brute force" for my barbarian, because that would just be so bad ass. Breaking Diablo's face with just physical force.
The only things I can think of is having the screen shake a bit or changing the impact sounds when you go over a certain damage
I imagine that knockback will be like it was in Diablo 2
Um, don't some of his abilities break the friggin ground? How could they do more than that? I guess maybe the monster physics could change depending on dmg per hit or maybe if you got a weapon that did high crits or something the ability would burst enemies apart. I dunno, the ability animations seem fine to me; in my opinion a huge improvement over D2 barb. Would be cool though, like in this game Loki I'm playing, if the barb had gauntlets so you could just use pure fist punch action, I think that would be pretty bad ass.
dont forget about RUNES!!!!....U can have poison whirlwind or ice cleave!!!! i think physical damage will be very apparent at the start of the game...but soon your first set of runes will expand both physical and elemental attacks.
YEAAAA!!! BARBARIAN, PURE BRUTE FORCE!!
You know what? I think you'll be perfectly happy with all the ghouls getting owned and falling off ledges or skeletons or whatnot. Ohh, and the blooooood.

Runes Will Rock Your World.
Bashiok commented on a post about whirlwind, where the prompter thought it looked too weak and not as powerful enough. Basically Bashiok implied that attaching a rune to that will definitely meet those
BARBARIAN MUST RAMPAGE MUST DESTROY EVERYTHING NO MERCY
principles. Personally I'm gonna go on a frenzy and go beserk killing everyone, and looking for those health orbs. MWHAHAHAHA UNSTOPPABLE FORCE

?
Runes are not there to add elemental damage. At least if some do, not all of them.
And the point here, I think, is precisely to not just end up with elemental stuff, but instead make the physical part more impressive.

I was hoping that the knockback would be crazy in D3. With the new physics you could throw them across the screen, or stand by a cliff and toss them all off.
Maybe the weapons could just get bigger as they do more damage? Not ridiculous like the shoulderpads, but noticeable larger. Or maybe louder when they strike. The sound change is a good idea though

Generally I like this idea. But I also think that the stronger monsters get, the harder it should be to break them apart.

I think if the screen shook everytime you got a critical hit on someone that would be annoying.

I think the way they have done it atm incorporated what the OP wants. The better the weapon (bigger faster.... stonger?) the higher the critical damage on it, the more the corpses explode into bits of intestine and kidney. However, it may look ridiculous if you got a critical hit with a dagger and the corpse exploded, becuase there just isn't enough threat from a dagger..... is there???
I agree with the dagger thing two. Only certain types of weapons should do it.
I have always liked games where physical damage was treated just as another type of damage like fire or ice. I think blizzard can and will easily add effects strictly for physical type damage. I think that this will even greater the auto attack that is so heavily used in this franchise. Things like shattering their bodies and sending monsters flying across the room could definitely achieve this. I also think that if they have a lighter/quicker class they could possibly have limbs fall off to show the damage that is being afflicted upon them.

I think the physical damage is less sparky by neture and i think the barbarain already have a great graphical emphasis.
Most of his skills looks nice - the only exception is that radial stomp that leaves a bunch of glowing milk in the floor (???).
And i believe the multiple death animations will have some connect with the way you the monster. If you use a shockwave or a mace maybe he will splattered apart, if you use a slashing weapon he will be cutted in half, etc...
Things aren't going to just fly apart because your playing a barbarian. Unique monsters blow apart for kicks and monsters also blow apart if a crit kills them. Basically, later on in the game you won't see quite as much splatter kills, but if your a crit monster you just might get that gratification anyway.

There are no stupid questions, just a bunch of inquisitive idiots.
I don't know why people are still wondering what the barb will do in action since we basically already have the news on exploding monsters. It was at the last Blizzcon.
Monsters killed by a critical hit will blow up. This no matter how it was killed,(spell, attack).
It will jsut change in visual depending on the element/attack. That's pretty simple to grasp.
The barbarian might be the biggest of all the chars, but that doesn't mean he is the most powerful. The magic of the wizard more than equals the brute strength of the mighty warrior. Therefore it would be unjust to believe that disintegrating a zombie would be any less gratifying than cleaving him in half with a giant axe.
Thus the critical was applied on ever character. And customized for every attack.

A great argument, and full of truth. The only thing I disagree with you is this: "The barbarian might be the biggest of all the chars, but that doesn't mean he is the most powerful."
I just think that Critical Hit is not the same as Physical damage. I personally wouldn't mind if we don't blow up any monsters into pieces in the early game, but only after the damage is high enough as "Breath of the dying berserker Axe", thats when we see some crazy limbs blasting!! (All I am saying is that, there should be a progression on physical damage, as it is treated as one of the element)
And every once in a while, there could be a critical death so satisfying that we all keep looking forward to hacking monsters.
If they all die the same (physical damage) it will get boring too.
I know that blizzard is animating all the different kinds of death with other elements. I am just wondering what is their take on physical damage.
And The Barbarian is probably the most powerful character in the game - physically.

Physical damage and Criticals aren't the same indeed. Once means a kind of damage, and another signifies a visceral hit was performed therefore is represented by an equally cruel death.
When you look at the video, you see that criticals will vary, so will normal deaths. D3's new ragdoll effect damage on baddies will make sure that every death have a very particular feel. Some fly away, blow up, split, etc.
Plus you got different elements. If that isn't enough than what is?
In real life if I throw a fireball on your ass how many ways you think you can die.
1)Fly away by the sheer force, then go crashing on something, everything catches on fire and ur ass melts to death.
2)If u were a fat ass I bet you wouldn't budge, but you'de catch on fire and still melt to death.
3)Litterally blow up from pent up methane combustion within your fat ass. (a.k.a. critical hit)
All those D3 already has, if you can think anything else maybe you should let Blizzard know.
