I JUST saw that video at WWI (I think it's called WWI), and is that animation where the two fireball type things fly down and explode on your character the leveling-up animation? If so, they really did an amazing job on that.
Oh, it was actually the Blizzcon 2008 video. I thought the gameplay trailer WAS the Blizzcon footage, but I guess not.
Yeah. In warcraft 3, it was like a flash of light. That's cool I guess. In diablo 2, all that happened was a noise, and in WoW... um... Does anything happen when you level up in WoW? I don't remember, but Diablo 3's level-up is the best of any other Blizzard game I've seen.
WoW has a flash of light similar to Warcraft 3 but revamped a bit. And then it tells you a few things in your chat bar about, such as the fact that you leveled and what stats went up.
Blizzard devs spoke of this new level up animation, and mentioned that they wanted to get rid of the "Did someone just level?" factor. They fixed it in the best way they knew possible, by making everything explode in a huge light show. Looks wicked to me.

To be honest, the sound feels too weak. As do 95% of the sound I hear in D3, but heh. Love the concept, though.
I'm praying its all because of these crappy web browsers. Hopefully when the game itself is actually pumping that sound out of our speakers (or into my 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound head set) it will actually start to sound like a REAL game.

Idk if it's just me, but I think the sounds sound alright...? I get what they are. Or maybe it's my stereo. My speakers are good.
Anyways, the level-up animation is really neat. I was watching the Blizzcon footage again, and I was noticed a bunch of animations flying all over the place, and it makes the game look really, really great. Not much more to say...
Now that you guys mentioned it, I have to agree that alot of the sounds in Diablo 3 seem to not be as badass as most Diablo 2 sounds were.. :/
Like I said, I am really hoping some of them are fairly place holder, or will at least get better when the game is actually generating them. Some of the vids we see actually put out some good audio, but man has there been some terrible audio quality in some of these vids. With the game actually pumpin' out the sounds, we should expect much better quality, especially on the bass end of the spectrum. If I'm playing with a barb, and I don't hear some mad bass, I will def be somewhat dissapointed. Good sound is just as good, if not better than good visuals. Maybe I'm just an audiophyle? It would explain my surrounds sound head sets XD. I got one for comp and one for 360. Those buggers are NICE!

Considering there isn't even any background music, i doubt the sounds are finished. Not to mention that the health globe pickup sound has been addressed and confirmed as changed by Bashiok a while back, so yea, i think a lot of the stuff is probably placeholder, not to mention the game in general will seem much more tense and not as... empty with background music.
I think that the animation seems pretty sweet too; don't know how crazy I am about the sound effect though. I think I read or heard somewhere that you do like criticals to all the monsters around you and they explode.
I also hope the Wizard's lazor is changed. Sounds more like... a laser. Should be a line of fire. (That's what it is, right?) I bet nothing we see even at THIS year's BlizzCon will be final.
