I wanna die alot. I wanna go after an army of monsters armed only with a rusty butter knife and a loincloth. I want my $79.99 (or so) to go for about 1,000 hrs of gameplay as I wonder where that zombie came from that's kicking my ass so bad, next Wednesday called saying I overshot it on my way to my dirt lunch. I want to re-experience the good old days of D2 where I couldnt tare myself away for food other than the stash of cheetos at the side of my desk because doing anything else would delay me kicking more butt, or more butt kicking me. I wanna know I've been through a war when I see layers of bodies on the ground, a cold sweat dripping from my face as I survived my encounters with 5 HP and broken items. I wanna yell at my screen as that arrow fells me, or that trap I should have seen makes me into cannon fodder. Don't wimp out on me! Don't make D3 into candyland with a sling! Don't give me so much power that I routinely knock legions off the map with my cardboard dagger (A LA WoW). I wanna be one of those 300 Spartans defending against the Persians at the pass. I want to see the invaders coming at me at the Alamo as the hordes clamour over the wall. Gimme gimme gimme! I wanna cut through a mass so big, the stacked bodies can be mistaken for the Rocky Mountains. I WANT A WAR!!!
Look at WoW. I'm sorry to say it like that, but its just how it is. Blizzard doesn't want their game too hard. Getting your ass kicked is fun? If it is for you, it isn't for a lot of people.
I know that fighting and surviving a battle through skill and barely making it out... its fun as hell, but I have yet to find a game that really does it well.
Why? Because most of the time, its just cheap. Its just you are completely overkilled, or put in unfair situations that kills you, or situations that assume you know everything and so, force you to die over and over until you get it.
All of that sucks big time, and Blizzard knows that the player in general does not want to be frustrated by failures like these. I'm hoping that the later difficulty levels are very hard.. but not in a cheap way. That means I have no idea how.
WoW is very generic, and very easy (so old people can play it). However it seems like it takes 4-EVER TO KILL ANYTHING. not like in diablo where the only creatures that take more than 5 hits are the bosses (which is very refreshing, i like it that way).
Theres some interview were Jay Wilsom said thet they want to make a challenging game but not a difficult one.A challening game is a game that have a serie of events that test the player's skill. A difficult game is a game that simply grief the playe rto a point that only the most fanatical ones keep playing it.
I believe D3 difficult level will stay about the same (avarage-easy) but will be more challening one compered to D2.
And i don't know why many ppl thinks that WoW are softcore or easy game. The easiest of the raid bosses in WoW offers more challenge then anything in any Diablo game (in terms of PvE ofc). I can only imagine ppl are talking without playing the game lol
Dude, I am sorry, but if you play WoW enough (especially raid) you know that the difficulty level seems to be set pretty high for most of the game's idiot players (which I hate to say, but it is very true). I mean, look at the Heroics. Most people can't even down Loken within a few tries. Look at Naxx. People can't seem to get that stupid Safety Dance down, its pathetic really, as I haven't died on that boss since my first try. OS is a joke-fest. If you can't dodge that firewall, you are a moron, it has a huge gap for you to run in to avoid it... If WoW was any harder, most people would just have too hard of a time making a raid work with all the idiots that play the game. Maybe i just played with a bunch of tards...
As for Diablo 3, they have already stated that what you see in the demos are early game concepts. In the beginning, you will be walking around as an overly-powered ass kicker in seek of total destruction. This will allow relatively new players to get their feet wet. As levels progress, the challenge will get rougher. When you up difficulties, it will get harder as well. Diablo was never meant to start off challenging, in fact they are all meant to start relatively simple and make their way from shit easy to hardest of the hard.
Also, something that has always held true about Diablo is that only you pick when you move on to the next area or difficulty. If you don't feel powerful enough, you can just grind out levels and gear until you feel comfortable. If you like a challenge, then by all means go in early and watch your skill pay off nicely. That is one of the beautiful things about Diablo, there is always something harder and harder coming up, and you can choose when your character is powerful enough for you to take that challenge. Also, Diablo 2 proved that the game can be very challenging, take a look at Uber-Tristram. "Yeah, lets give those people who like a challenge something they can go for, lets make a level where you fight not one, but all three of the prime evils, and on top of that each on is on steroids... That should shut them up for a while."
Not only that, just by watching the gameplay videos you can easily tell that this Diablo is much more dynamic that its predecessors. Sure, you could make it through a good bit of the game with a few skills, but players that step up and take advantage of that dynamic content will be awarded. Many creatures and creature combinations will have strategies that you will be able to figure out based on experience and/or game observations. Many skills can be used in combination for even more dynamic combat. Only the player can determine how powerful s/he really is based on his/her knowledge/skill.

Nowdays wow's challenge are not to kill the bosses in the raid, but get the special activiments. They did that because in classic wow and in TBC only 3% of the wow players were able to "finish" the game (defeat kel'thuzad and illidan). Also the challenging in WoW lies in finish the top raids before it casual nerf.
And for god sake, ubers is a joke just like any D2 boss. My brother played D2 only once in life (lvl72 sorc) and i was just going to kill ubers with my trap sin and he asked to try out. Really, a person who played D2 for ONE week could finish the ultimate challenge in the game with ONE try.

This just inspired a thought;
As balancing enemy, environment and overall situational difficulty can be difficult - more to the point; achieving that perfect balance of "I just barely made it out of that!! Waaaaouhhh!" feeling, the game engine could implement reduced global damage modifiers from enemies to players that approach zero health.
This ought to simulate that experience because the player will have more opportunity to flee in a clearly overwhelming situation, or stick it out if they think they can come out on top if they "just hang on a little longer!"
I just saw a few things after rewatching some of the Blizzcon 08 vids, supposedly now bosses will be much much more dynamic. There will no longer be this idea of a guy in a room that you kinda just kite around and kill. In fact, the Thousand Pounder and King Leodric are actually only mini bosses. Apparently bosses will now have a strategy, it isn't just about kiting some nasty guy around a room while trying to damage him and avoid damage anymore. Jay Wilson mentions that they developers had asked him "At what level do we want to draw a line?". He basically told them there is no limit other than what their technology allows. We may see bosses that will force us to use a bit of the destructible invironments, we will see bosses with multiple stages of attack, and we will most definately see an increase in the level of challenge D3 provides in comparison to D2 as levels progress. For now, we just get to see the greasy kid stuff.

The problem is that might not work because it's to artificial.
This naturally occurs if the game dificult is well balanced. This never happens to D2 because of the abundance of potions and town portals, you can allways heal yourself. I hope D3 will add this survivor feeling, wich is very well suited to dungeon crawlers.
Also a skill that can be used when the character hit 20~25% HP would be cool. Like a barbarian skill that he gets alsome rage and damage, allowing him to turn the tide of battle.

Faded out her voice and soiled her name
And like marked pages in a diary
Everything seemed clean that is unstained
The incoherent talk of ordinary days
Why would we really need to live?
Decide what is clear and what's within a haze
What you should take and what to give" - Opeth
