I think Doppel is looking at it from a practical business standpoint, Umpa. It would obviously be stupid for Bashiok to say "no, we're not pushing for a mature game". It's all tentative until the game is actually ready for release, so he could say that and then later down the line they could decide to just mainstream it and attract way more customers. He's saying what people want to hear because he's in the business.
On the other hand, if he didn't strictly mean what he said he could have just not replied at all on it. Hm...
Not that I'm saying that this isn't worth discussing or that I'm opposed to this.
"We're planning for a mature rating. It will be justified."
Woot, this made my day.

I'm sorry but, care to explain to me again how confirming D3 will be an M rated game (duh) is something to be ecstatic about? Also, i didn't see Bashiok confirming impaled bodies or anything, so i have no idea what you're talking about.
Remember, that a lot of people were speculating that it was going to be rated T, to get WoW audience. I knew that blizz wouldn't do this.
When has Blizz really sold out? I don't think they have ever been known to sacrifice vision for cash. They always follow the vision. And from the way the developers speak of the game I believe they will not disappoint. But then again I'm an old Blizz faithful so I'm clearly biased.
Plus, I don't think Bashiok would say that with the intent of misleading because earlier they had no fear in divulging info that they game might be rated T. Unless they did that by accident and are now trying to save face I doubt that is why Bashiok chose to telll us they are aiming for an M rating.

Were you around when the art debate flaming bonanza against Blizzard was going on? If anyone even makes a thread about it, it's the same "fuck Blizzard" scenario. I think they would disagree.
I would say they compromised on many levels in Diablo II, as well, but that was probably because they didn't have the buttload of cash they do now.
Of course, I remain positively resolute that they'll fix a lot of the mistakes in Diablo III, what with it being a larger company and especially in the face of such a picky fanbase, but you can never know until the game comes out.
What we've seen so far has been considerably atmospheric and at times very demonic, and considering what we've seen so far is probably the earliest / 'tamest' area(s) of the game, I'm pretty sure there's nothing to worry about, and I think Bashiok was saying as much.
I get those are just examples, but you seem really hung up on those two images -- are you expecting Bash to actually say 'Oh, like some impaled bodies and some burning crosses...'. He isn't going to start naming off examples, because he knows as things progress the screenshots / gameplay videos will speak for themselves. Reading examples in text will only work to deflate the effect of seeing them in-game.
But again, he didn't actually even answer the question whether the game will be more demonic or not, just like the person who created the thread (and noted how D1 was much more demonic then D2) asked.
So, i have no idea what you're talking about, all i see is "yes the game will be rated M", and all i can reply is "duh".
Well. Since you know everything I guess it's not news to you. But a lot of people were fearing it would be rated T as speculated.
And he did answer the question with implications....

Well, i guess i did then? Care to explain to me the significance of it please?
I'm not the person concerned here but I'll give my two cents. Blizz is gonna aim for the mature rating which means that they don't have to retain anything from the player. Everything will be raw and crude, what you see is what you get. Having a mature rating because of 1 scene in the game is lame... D3 will go all the way to justify the mature rating. This is how it should be done and this is how it will be done.
BTW: What bashiok said was nothing new, they already announced that D3 would be slabbed with a M rating and .... for good reasons apparently
Ha ha nice one Ivaron ! BAD NEWS DUuuuuuDE
I think d3 will be as demonic as d2. D1 was unique with his dark and gritty atmosphere, a thing that is impossible to bring to games like d2 and d3. When you spread evil in every corner of the world, you make a dilution of the overall demonic atmosphere... it's starts to look like an evil invasion instead of an evil presence. D1 was the horror caused by the unknown force in the corrupted cathedral. D2 was the horror caused by the 3 prime evils. D3 will be about the war between the 3 worlds. Bad news for anyone hoping for a dark D1 atmosphere... IT JUST WON'T HAPPEN! Sorry .. 0_0;
The question was if it would be as demonic as Diablo 1. Meaning not like Diablo 2, which was a little bitch compared to Diablo 1 in this aspect. Bashiok didn't really answer, so it probably won't. So bad news dude.
I think you need to get to know Bashiok a little more.
He NEVER answers a question directly. He likes to be clever and answer indirectly. Which he did here..

that's his job. if he answered questions directly, then when the game gets released, it BETTER have what was promised! Also, some things just aren't for sure now. that is, a lot of tweaking still needs to be done.

No, answering a question directly or not does not mean he is going to give a definite answer.
Your confusing directly answering a question with giving a definite answer.
He can directly answer the question with a maybe.
"will d3 have ravenfrost?" "maybe"
He answered the question directly but gave an unsure answer.
"Will D3 have ravenfrost?" "Well. there will be times when not even Antarctica could freeze you if you have the right gear."
The example above is an indirect answer with implications that if there is no ravenfrost, there will certainly be items to give similar effects.

Bashiok is the updates we can get, it's like a book with a special key to each chapter that you must found, if you get a key you open a chapter with something that you have to decipher to understand what we can have in D3 but this book can be modified by the Devs of D3.

Thats not true, i don't know but how many games (percentage wise) actually have an M rating? I bet its a whole lot, just "an M rating will be justified" doesn't mean they'll push it to the limits, and even then really pushing it might provoke an AO rating and i'm sure Blizzard doesn't want anything to do with it. It more sounds like they're covering their bases to be honest, as in "the game won't be as demonic but an M-rating will still be justified because of bucket loads of blood" or whatever.
(i don't know but, i don't think they are so lenient about religious "anti-christ" symbols and nudity as they were back when D2 was released, let alone D1).
The opposite can also be true. Everything we say is based on speculation, my speculation was optimistic and yours was pessimist, they are in fact equally valuable. M-rating can mean anything these days... I have seen movies full of nude scenes getting a pg-13 rating. When I look at games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill who got a M-rating I can very well imagine blizzard staying in the limits as well as pushing the boundaries.
Making something scary or creepy can be done without the use of gross images... you just need to be clever and use the music and circumstances at the right time. Horror is all about fears and expectations. This is the heart of diablo 1... and it should be a concern in diablo 3, not the rating. Showing dead bodies is of bad taste, you need to show something or demonstrate a feeling. You need to prepare the viewer for something they could project to their own lives. The best example here would be the Butcher. You hear about what he has done, you see the blood, the bodies, the survivor. You don't know he is somewhere near and Pop... HAAA FRESH MEAT!. HOLY SHIT! I didn't expect that. Circumstance and expectation. Bam you have an instant fear. all that crude horror in a perfectly well prepared context.
Well I had a lot on my mind I guess.
Good luck to anyone able to read my encyclopedia
I would defiantly be disappointed if there was no satanic imagery in the game. It defiantly felt like they took the wuss rout in 2 with the half assed evilness of it all. I mean I don't expect them to go all the way and have shit like a evil pope with christs bloody skull hanging off of his belt which he jams on the end of his dong and fires it at you like a missile (little boys head might be funnier). But at least give me something a little blasphemous! Gore is a given and I never would have worried about that. But I'll be damned if I don't want some upside down crosses and preachers hanging from the church rafters. I wish they would bring in some metal bands to help with this stuff, I want stuff like bloodbaths mock the cross t shirt design!
The thing that worries me most is that Blizzard is in much more of a industry leader out in front of everybody kind of position than with D1 or D2. That makes me worried that they feel even more pressure to tone down the blasphemy. I feel like were just going to get a few half assed pentagrams.
