I don't know if they announced it or not but i would like to see some character modification like hair style/color and face paint (tattoo). i think that it would make each character unique when playing online. even though most of it will be covered up once you get helms and such but still would think it would be fun to see freshly new characters of the same class that don't exactly look the same.

Nah, I think it would be more appropriate to keep it all the same. More in the spirit of Diablo.
It's not wow, there can't be a million different heroes. Because there is only one way you can have them look it kind of puts a specific face on the heroes.

I know its not WoW but yet you can all have different names which which will make them all different heros but they all look the same (clones). i don't mean to have alot of modifications like in WoW but just minor ones. like the tattoo just think of it as war paint. not every warrior has the same paint style.

Maybe just 3 different customs to choose from, so it won't be like too much and the customization could be kind of small so there is no big difference but you know that maybe your appearance is not the same to the one next to you.

thEy said in an inerterview that they had char customizng but it ended up being pointless because the screen was so busy you really couldn't tell that you had a Mohawk or a tatoo. So they will most likely take it out.

here is what i thought of for a story so they keep there faces the same.
so lets say you are a barbarian. and you do a quest and there is a quest that goes with a story that you meet up with a witch doctor and fight to get to diablo.
my thought of the story is that all 5 characters are the main heroes. cause like the barbarian has his own specific background. the wizard has her own specific background. and im not sure about the Witch doctor.
diablo 2 sorceress talked about the zann esu clan. the wizard talked about this apprentice who got into a forbidden book of power. so they kinda make it sound like the classes you play are 1 person.
The problem is simple, as you pointed out with the helm.
Its not long before all we see from you is your equipment.
Not saying I am against it, though. Especially when it comes to the head, sometimes I wish it had WoW's options (hide helm, so you see the head) and with some configuration. I don't see anything wrong with that, saying "you won't see it when there is a lot of action"... well of course, you generally don't focus on your friends in battle.
I think it could be nice, but I'm not expecting it, and it wouldn't change much in the end anyway.
I've the same necronegal opnion. I believe the customisation will be more focused uppon your items, not your character. But i think you should be able to change your hair style and color.

IIRC they said that characters can't be modified.
And anyways.. the gear should have more focus. How the gear looks on you.. maybe we can modify our gear with gems and such.

But in the game play video you got to see you're char close up when you change his inventory. Also the barb's armour did not completely encase him so maybe there will be areas where you can see customization.
I hope they don't take it out as I love customizing characters. One of the biggest flaws with that system is facegen though. Like in Oblivion or Sims 3 where all the faces look kindof the same and just a bit rubbish (both amazing games, I just don't like the facegen)
also i dont see a point in changing the character faces anyway.
i remember WWI that the barbarian is actually the same one from diablo 2. And supposedly, on the diablo3.com website, the wizard is talked about as one specific person.
so if you were to change the face styles it would take away from the story background of the character.
after thinking and reading some of replys i come to say that if they can only make the minor changes to the characters only for online play. since most of the time playing multi-player is not played to the storyline and you often get the same class (and gender if playing D3) in the same party. being able to atless change minor looks will show that you ain't seeing twins.
Instead of hair style/color and tattoos how about if they let you modify the height and age of your character.

That would be a terrible idea imo. The character is fixed, his a person that lives inside that world. His like a character in a book. People can't change the age of the characters in a book.
My hair suggestions is based that you control your character when the game starts, so you write a part of the book, so you can choose to use some dye to change your hair color or make a tatoo with you want to.
Character looks wont matter much since you wont be able to see their bodies cause of all the equipment, they wear, Maybe instead of your looks you can modify the way your equipment looks
or how about some item appearance customization?
as has been said, after a while, you'll be decked out in armor anyways.
but why not be able to spice that up a little?
one thing that always kind of bugged me about playing online and going legit (yes, i enjoyed some classic hack-action as well. nothing like wearing a full set of "whites" back in the day. :P)
was that sometimes, the stuff you wanted to use out of personal preference was not the stuff that you should be wearing for maximum power and efficiency.
if i have some badass looking sword that's decent, and then some lame one-hand axe that's got a ton of attributes and makes my character more powerful, of course i'm going to go with the axe, even though i like the sword better.
so how about just being able to edit the appearance of your items?
obviously not going so far as to change the weapon type itself, but maybe just what that axe actually looks like (ex: change it's appearance from that of a hand axe to that of some other, cooler looking axe) and maybe the colors of it as well, all while keeping it's info and attributes the same and un-editable.
same for armor. at least some color changing, or the ability to put colored designs (war paint?) or your own personally made emblem or design on your shoulder pads or shield?
things like that.
maybe the ability to name some of our own equipment?
we find unques with names like "Habagash's Rod of Clubbing" (not a real example :P)
I dislike item customization more though, because not only is it purely for cosmetic reasons, it also gravely diminishes what kind of character you portray i feel because the only visual give-away of what kind of character you are are the items you wear.
so what you're saying is you prefer that each character is clearly recognizable?
i dunno, i think it would give it more of a realistic, worldly feel if you couldn't always tell.
like if you were actually standing in one of these towns and a visiting warrior strode in to your shop, covered in armor and equipment, you wouldn't always be able to tell what they were.
also i think a little more individualism for everyone's own character would make multiplayer more enjoyable for reasons like PvP as well. using your example, you might not always know what class you're about to fight. i would enjoy that more. dueling stops being fun once everyone figures out that a certain build of a certain class is better than others. then people don't want to fight that build because they don't want to lose. and then everyyyyone starts a character of that class and makes the same thing. it's too concrete statistical and well known for me.
besides, you'd know what they were anyways, regardless of what they were wearing, once you saw the skills they were using, so who cares.
some customization would just be nice so there could be more individuality and you could have what you like and what you think looks cool, not just what is best for you.
cosmetic, yes. just some little things. nothing big.
