"Potentially a good point, but if certain legislature passes I'm not sure it will really matter."
Is the wizard facing a namechange? Or possible deletion?
If so what would the new name be / or reason for deletion? (balancing issues?)
Could i be missing the point and that 'legislature' could be in terms of localization?
There were some good comments over on Diii.Net (hope it's okay to mention another site?) about this where it basically looks like Germany is getting ready to possibly put very strict laws into place opposing violent video games, and D3 would almost assuredly be banned -- most seem to think this is what Bashiok is referring to.

I haven't heard about this. Poor, poor Germans... I feel for them. But I don't think the name will be changed, it might possibly be edited for the German copies, but not for all of ours.

I'm getting sick of their stupid laws around games. God, if you live there and like games, get out now. I feel for you.
I think there are games that just never made it there at all, as in they didn't bother to make a "german" version. I just hope none ever dumbed down their game for everyone because of them.
Generally, there are "german" versions now and they cut a load of stuff from it. People there can often hate playing these versions so I don't know why they bother.
If they put even stricter laws though, oh god thats retarded. No way in hell Diablo 3 can get there.
Other than that, I really don't understand how a name could be of any issue. Its simple enough to give German a different for it, if thats all that matters. That its called Wizard for us sure as hell isn't a problem, is it? And even at worse, even if it was... its just a name.
Why would they change it? When a game gets translated into another language its not like they do direct translations. The game goes through a localization process anyways and if anything they will change the name if they want to.
I have never heard of a company ever changing a name in a version of the game so it translates well into another. It just doesn't make any sense.
I think they should keep Wizard. It's an old school mage class and Blizzard has yet to use it, and one of the reasons they mentioned to name this class a wizard was because of the ability to use Arcane magic. At least that's what I remember, and it makes sense. Kind of like sticking a little D&D into Diablo.
This language issuea is kind of funny.
In portuguese Wizard are sinomimous of Witch (tecnically theres no translation for Wizard). Sorceror are usually used to describe a more sofisticated "Witch" and Mage describe a user of magic, but not that old lady with the cauldron and frog curses, but a sage (Gandalf-like concept).
What I'm trying to say is that, depending of the linguage, those kind of stuff can have completly different meanings, in a way that is impossible to make a acurate translation (thats why games translated to portuguese always have execly this problem in the spell casters - imagine yourself playing with a class named Warlock, but this class summon butterlflies and do other utter cheesy stuff).
Dang wtf is wrong with the laws in Germany. Why would violent video games be a problem in the first place?

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
I highly doubt they will change the name, they would have to re-record all the voice dialog of people saying Wizard. And who knows how long they have been doing the voice work, it would be a pain in the ass for them I presume.
if a name change is enough to bypass a law, well, it's a very stupid law.
Megalulz right here.
They mean that very violent games like Diablo III might become illegal in Germany, and therefore there's no need to think of a new name for the Wizard in German.

I think that the name should stay the same in both versions. If Germany has a problem with it, they can just call that class something else. Especially if they probably wont be able to play it anyway (because of the laws mentioned earlier).

Aaaaw, that sucks pretty hard.
Some of my favorite violent games came out of Germany... anyone ever played Gothic ?
Back on topic though, no doubt they will be changing names slightly to fit in more with different languages, it just makes sense. Apparently not in Germany though :(.

Not sure if this should be in the Wizard thread, but I put it here because it doesn't seem like anyone has spoken about this (i searched).

thinking about e-commerce (just to mention legit solution) seems just a stupid law.
Maybe the name-change is referred to the german law but, if a name change is enough to bypass a law, well, it's a very stupid law.
I think if blizz introduced the character as Wizard, it will be Wizard in the end.
In italian wizard and sorceress means quite the same thing, maybe they'll try "mother-in-law" instead?
