For you lazy clickers: "A planned feature that did not make it into the final game, recipe scrolls were going to drop from monsters, and when clicked they would reveal various Horadric Cube recipes. The artwork was functional, but the D2 team never had time to enable their function."
Just an FYI.
Should have been in a patch. If the artwork was done, they had plenty of time to implement it. No excuse!
I'd prefer a part of your stash that works like the cube, like it has been integrated with the stash. The recipes could be found by reading scrolls. Ofc some of the basic would be available already, like the gem + gem + gem = higher gem. It gives grinding bosses another purpose To find scrolls.
I think the cube was kind of a rudimentary thing but then i m still sentimentally attached to it!!!

The cube should probably remain in D2, but the same kind of functionality does need to be included in D3. Such as transmuting gems, quivers, cow level, etc.
The scroll idea is not too bad, however I can foresee it becoming some really lame thing where not only do you have to grind for rare material drops for the item, but you also need to find the incredibly rare scroll to make the item. Causing scrolls to become similar to current runewords. If the scrolls are just uncommon (not super rare), and the materials required to make the item are fairly common as well to produce an item of similar worth to a unique item; then the scroll system would be really awesome. Implementing the scroll crafted items as extremely rare and extremely powerful items like the current runewords would just be bad, as "fun" as it might be to try and create such an item.
Scrolls wouldn't have to be one per item, it is just a recipe that you will "learn" once you have read it. And materials is unevitable, unless you want to create ittems out of nothing?
I'm not quite sure what you meant by "Scrolls wouldn't have to be one per item". However, I do understand that materials are inevitable, I was trying to say that materials shouldn't be super rare. Ideally the materials are able to be bought from a vendor or easily found (Eg. to craft a sword this way, you need to learn the scroll, blue sword from a vendor or found from a monster, some gems, maybe a ring or something; nothing super rare).
Perhaps to put what I meant another way, the system used in Titan Quest (had to find the really rare scroll, then make sure you had a set of certain rare runes, etc.) is really lame and boring. A higher chance to obtain slightly less powerful items would be much better in my opinion.
Tradeable scrolls is actually a pretty good idea, I didn't think of that. Would alleviate a lot of the rarity concerns I had, anyway.
Changing an items stats wouldn't be so bad, but I had envisioned that scroll-crafted items would be much grander. They would be on par with uniques and have pre-set stats. This way, the player can attempt to create a scroll-crafted item if they can't find anything suitable. Or perhaps the scroll-crafted items fill a niche set of stats that cookie-cutter specs might not favour, this would allow further character customisation by providing stats for specs that may be sub-optimal.
I didn't mean more powerful than uniques, just roughly equivalent. Perhaps requiring a similar type unique (unique sword to craft a unique sword recipe) and the recipe plus some other relatively common items (gems probably) to create an item of similar value but different stats.
However, I don't see scrolls being used to craft less powerful randomly generated items, scrolls to me seem to indicate something more precise. However, perhaps there can be an unlocked NPC or more common scrolls to achieve randomly generated stats to a blue or yellow item.
On a different note, perhaps we could consider scrolls to not craft items but imbue them with bonuses. Somewhat similar to jewels and runes from D2, but only provide 1-3 smallish stat mods depending on how rare the item is. For example, a common scroll of plus fire damage to weapon. Could require the scroll, 2 flawless rubies and perhaps something else, to add fire damage to weapon, fairly common (rare quality). Then higher quality (and thus more rare) scrolls could imbue a piece of armor with mana regeneration, mana and increased armor in small quantites. May require 3 perfect sapphires, perfect diamond and a high level unique to be absorbed. This scroll system would work similar to runes for skills, allowing for more customisation. You would probably have to limit every item to 1 scroll enchantment, and probably not for every slot. Just food for thought.
the cube should be present in Diablo 3...
what if..in D3..incase we have to transmute pieces that are destroyed back together...like the horadric staff..and the khalim's eye, brain, flail, etc.
+
it would be quite a nostalgic thing for the reappearance of Horadric cube in D3...
+
Who knows there are many quests that require the Horadric cube? or perhaps side-Quests?
....
i mean..i dont know...bt according to me..it would be a pretty good thing to have the Horadric cube in D3..or a question will arise...
"what happened to the Horadric Cube?" -- did u think about that?

the mechanic doesnt have to gone
just its boring and a kind of showing of lack of creativity if they stick the same item again lol
i think they could stick it as a building piece somewhere and it would still achieve that
it could appear in the game just not exactly how it was in D2 =3
besides i think itd be more fun for a entirely different mechanic to substitute it in D3
they could always patch it in later if the other mechanic sux XD
but the original version 1.00 shouldnt have a cube in it =3
the thing is...it cant work the way u want it to be..
cZ it is said that it is an "ancient ITEM" in the Horadric Lore... =]
and u cant make it different as it is already set...
for example...
the weapons n armors from Diablo1... they are still there...like..The Butchers Cleaver, etc.

I wouldn't hold my breath. It wouldn't make sense for you to have the Horadric Cube when your previous character had it. The only person it would make sense on would be the Barbarian really. Since he's the same person from D2, it seems likely that he would have kept the Horadric Cube. How would the Wizard or Witch Doctor have gotten it?

As many have already said, I'd prefer the cube's functions to be replaced by an NPC and/or other processes. Even then, the prospect of having to find recipes before you can make stuff sounds good to me.

i see the cube as more of something that was unique to diablo 2
and looking at the videos from diablo 3
it doesnt exactly have the same feel to it lol
whatever they use for crafting will prob be original (hopefully) so im not so high into the cube thing =3

No No, THE HORADRIC RECTANGLE!
Its obvious that we need various crafting features and abilities, just not through the cube.
They mentioned that there will not be a cube, but they have hinted at something similar. I think Cain stole the cube from the hero....
