From what I've read the rumors are that there will be a 4 person cap for one game but what does this mean in regards to online pvp? I enjoyed diablo 2 where you could captivate (4 on 4)(2 on 2 on 2) etc. battles because you could have a larger number of characters against each other. Plus in team battles you can balance out certain classes over powering one another. For example if I was fighting a character class that was better than mine in the rock, paper, scissors sence than I would simply leave the game and rejoy as a character that could beat his/hers but than he could just do the same. I feel with a 4 player cap that this will happen often. Plus PvP games need more people because in a four player cap only 3 people will be actually fighting one will be standing in town. talking shit, and stealing gold.
I understand the oposition as well that it was lame when 7 people would party just to kill one person. But maybe offering a cap on the amount of people in one party could limit this?

Assuming that PvP will still take place in the safe-zone/danger-zone borders of town and wilderness. I hate to say it but PvP in Diablo 2 wasn't very organized to begin with.
They haven't released any information regarding pvp yet...
They might just create a whole new system for PvP
With my creativity(lol) I could think of this system;
Where one creates a server with a limit of X. But then in a PvP map, like the tristram cathadral and surroundings. Or a swampy forest.
Can you see where I am going? A server list would then be split into PvM and PvP, with a single button. Ofcourse the main focus should be PvM in a PvM game, but there should
always be a possibility of hostile'n others. Though, i think games should not start when there are enough people (similar to the WoW BG system). But keep it like B.Net, where one creates a server and people can join it.
The server list would be as folowing;
2v2 Swamp
Duelzzz Cathadral
Duelsssss Mountain
You get the point
I think, its for balancing reasons they limit the cap to 4 players. A boss fight is not really fun when there are 8 people bashing a boss. It sort of feels like you're not really not needed
or participating at all. As for 4 people, i can inmagine the balancing is alot easier.
And ofcourse the feeling that you are a powerful hero that can beat down a giant boss with just a few others. Instead of zerking a boss with many...

The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn’t...
Having the 4 player cap to me will benefit pvp for the sake of originality. Also, it will let people customize their method of play to better allocate to even less than the curent amount of players in D2.
I hope you know that neither of those sentences make any sense
Ok, let me rephrase so you can understand.

the sake of originality... in pvp... which is what this thread is about.
For example: With eight people in a game, the killing is usually unplanned and right to the point.
But with four people, I believe people will try to plan their strategies more.

In Diablo 2 you had to make changes in your pre-planned attack, regarding the other seven people you were grouped with.
In Diablo 3, you will only have to alter your techniques for those three.
and in that server there are no safe zones at all lol
theres fog of war and hostile maybe even some other creep like creatures in there too
they could also make no drops in those servers so you would have to play through the story to get the loot but they could be there for those bored ppl who wanna bash someones face in xD
in pvp servers there is no penalty for death you just randomly spawn somewhere else in that map and try to find and kill more players lol
they could increase the players per game to maybe like 6 instead of 4 but i wouldnt mind 4 either
You say that with condescension, as if it's my fault your sentences were poorly constructed and meant nothing as they were originally. I hope you can see how hilarious that is.
Let ME break it down for YOU:

Nothing can “benefit something for the sake of originality”. That literally makes no sense. If your point held any water (which it doesn’t, by the way), you might say that “the 4 player cap will improve pvp by forcing players to adopt new strategies”.

I cannot understand this sentence. I don’t even know what you were trying to get across. If there was a thought in your mind when you wrote it, that thought was not communicated here. The word “allocate” can’t be used in anything even close to that context.

Let me just dispel the rumour about the 4-player cap. The one and only time that this was said, was by Jay Wilson, on the last Blizzcon and I am 90% sure that it was in relation to the Blizzcon build. He said that they are allowing 4 players per game. I remember watching the live stream of one of the press conferences (most likely) where he said that, and at the time, I understood that it relates to what people on Blizzcon are experiencing (since it was all novel and whatnot because it was the first time to be played publicly).
In the following week, diii.net published an article saying that someone interviewed Jay Wilson and that he said that they thing the game currently works the best with five players, but that they are looking into raising the cap (to up to eight). However, the news article didn't provide a link to the actual source, so it might have been a deliberate reinterpretation of a really old interview, for the sake of posting something exclusive.
Either way, the talks about the 4-player cap are neither officially confirmed, or likely to be the case. If anything, it is too early to decide something like that considering that they are not exactly far into the production, and that they haven't yet decided much less essential things (on the latest Blizzcast a week ago or so, Jay was not even sure if there will be 'enterable buildings in towns' and let alone something as important as a player-per-game cap).
