daemaro, yes i see what you're saying.
but i still argue that visibility < impression
and i'm so glad you picked that little cowering guy cause i hate him! he's the perfect example of why my impression is negative.
luckman the arguement is not that we'll get used to whatever
the arguement is that the short term getting used to whatever icons (and the high visibility associated with facilitating it) is not as important as the long term lasting impression that the graphics of the icons leave on you.

but anyway i'm on your side why are we fighting?
i'm for symbolic and stone!

Guys, they're doing their best to please us. The new icons are fine. They're dark, and actually have color. I find the D2 icons to be very plain and uninteresting.
The problem seem to be that you think that you'll have the luxury of having all your skills in different colors. Obviously, in this case the Diablo 3-styled icons are easier to distinguish than the Diablo-styled icons.
I don't think that, but even in that ONE occasion it makes the new ones superior in my opinion, at least in practicality.
And I'm certain you'll have at least one blue skill.
Not to mention I'm sure they won't stick with just red til the end. They even said at first they tried red for all berserker skills but it didn't look right. So now they're just going with what looks best.
Well yes, I do agree that the color-coding does, individually, improve the general impression. But generally, I maintain that art direction of them is severely cluttered compared to the clean-cut Diablo-styled ones.
Two tens doesn't make a Full House, so to say.
I agree, the old ones were less "cluttered" and more simplistic.
You only have 5 of them on screen anyway and you gain them one at a time. How can that be confusing?
Go try out Nox PvP, and you'll know how.
I believe colored icons > two-color icons. Mostly because they're easier to recognize + they permit more combinations of stuff used. I imagine my spell-bar will contain mostly skills of different colors. All I have to think of is "3 is green that's the poison arrow spell" or something like that.
The detail on the skills are not for easy recognition, they're there for you to look at them for the first few times or so, that's all.
I never had an issue identifying skills in Diablo II- I hardly ever even looked at them since I had them pinned to my F keys. And I didn't have to look at my F keys or their corresponding skill because I had it all memorized. If you spend hours playing your character through the acts and difficulties, you should have absolutely no trouble telling your skill icons apart whatsoever.
On the flip side, the news ones are just impossible to mix up by the same token. You're going to be playing for hours with these skills, have them ascribed to hotkeys and mouse bindings. They all have different forms and colors, the colors being used to visually show you what kind of damage the skill might employ.
I see no issue whatsoever with either. The only way to argue otherwise is if you actually have a vision impairment. Otherwise you're just arguing opinion, which isn't a fact and varies for everyone, so you can't expect to force it on everyone.
I think Blizz should blend both styles that are being argued here. They could take the Diablo/D2 style of stone-carved icons, and add some colour to them. It would keep the hardcore fans happy, while it would also go well with the new UI and artistic direction.
At the moment however, I do prefer the coloured icons. They go so well with the new interface, and look pretty good. They are NOT "WoW-ish", people are just assuming that any splash of colour = WoW influence. These icons are darker, grittier, and use simple colours over vibrant colours.
As for the whole visibility argument, has anyone ever played Guild Wars? Each skill tree used the same colour to represent different skills (fire skills were all coloured red, water all had blue in them, ect) and each skill was VERY easy to recognize. I never had a problem telling my skills apart in that game.

+1 rep for reminding me of that.

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees
Bleh... I was so sad when I first saw Starcraft 2. It's gotten it's influence from Warcraft 3 however, not so much WoW. But still, it really shows how much the warcraft universe if effecting the other two games. They recently changed some of the zerg units to be more starcraft-y, and they showed before and after screens. It was unbeleiveablew how much the before pics looked like Warcraft's cartoony, vibrant style. But anywho, back on topic !
True, the skill icons aren't the biggest issue out there, but it's the collection of little things that really make a game in my opinion.

I think it's perfect. It looks like a fallen one, and we all know they're not the bravest warriors.
