at the beginning of the gameplay video he is using 2 hand axes but then occasionally he immediately switches and uses this huge hammer and then goes immediately back to the axes. it seems extremely quick and odd looking and thus more like a spell than a weapon switch.
does anyone know which of the two it is, weapon switch or spell?
you can't call it a spell. you can call it a Talent i suppose, because thats what skills are now*, talents. poster #2 is 100% correct.
sorry typo with not and now**
spell to me seems more like mage-ish.. like you're casting something. a barbarian doesnt use magic so that's why i say you cannot call that a spell.
You're splitting hairs. It's a skill. By skill, I mean a special ability. You can call it a spell, a talent or a skill, but it all means the same thing.
You can call it a spell, a talent or a skill, but it all means the same thing.
I don't even know that it's a same thing. In WoW, you train all skills and abilities by buying them from a trainer, then use talent trees to modify them. In Diablo 3, you learn the skills directly from the trees. I don't understand the insinuation that they are now 'talents'. Maybe because Bashiok and other devs occasionally refer to them as talents because it's just the lingo that people inherited from WoW lately, no sin in that.
hes referring to the fact that a magical hammer appears from thin air like its summoned to smash whatever is infront of the barbarian at the time.
and it looks odd because the weapons he was using just disappear and are replaced by this giant hammer thing... and then they magically just appear again.
I think the hammer fits nicely for a barbarian.. magic or not.. Berserk was magic, war cry was magic etc etc.. With the hammer barbarian summons some magical hammer to strike down enemies with the help of his ancestral or something
In some interview, Jay was talking about how boring the Barbarian in D2 was because all of his moves were just swinging his weapon the same way with a different effect and how they didn't explore the magical side of him enough. He talked about how they were working on making the Barbarian magic but maintaining a Barbarian type feel by making all spells still very physical. He described Hammer of the Ancients as the Barbarian calling upon his ancestors' powers to summon that giant, magic hammer. The fact that he's smashing the ground with a giant hammer is Barbaric enough for him that the magic aspect is really irrelevant.
That was in the first gameplay video we saw; who's to say they won't change it. Bashiok has already said that they've changed the look of the UI and skill markers http://forums.battle.net/thread.html?topicId=14133419015&sid=3000. Post 9 if you are really that lazy. I don't really see whats so over the top magical about it; who cares, it's a fantasy game not friggin trying to be as realistic as possible. What about leap attack? Did that make sense in D2? You mean to tell me that a barb, with all his heavy gear on jumping over a friggin mountain wasn't ludicrous?
Its a spell, duh.
And seriously, Jay's an idiot if he thinks the reason the barbarian is boring is because he didn't make use of over the top magical effects.
lmao exactly. he sucked because he literally sucked. the barbarian sucked horribly at pvm no matter what weapons he had.
and you guys are saying that you like the hammer but im simply saying that it looks odd. it appears out of nowhere into his hands and then his weapons simply re appear into his hands...

I think it could be a cool skill when combined with runes. But they should put in a animation that shows him putting his weps away real quick.

its called magic, i have no problem with his leap attack. my problem is that the animation looks sloppy as the hammer appears in his hands and the weapons he was using just disappears. it would be cool if he raised his hand in the air and then this ethereal type hand came down and smashed the ground with a huge hammer. sort of like the hammer of Thor or something. that way the weapons he had in his hand would never leave his hand like they do right now.
i would even be more satisfied if the hammer that appears was all transparent and had a mist around it. that at least would be cool
lmao exactly. he sucked because he literally sucked.
Really? I don't remember the Barbarian literally sucking anything.
You're probably the guy in the theaters whispering to your grandparents about all the little continuity errors instead of enjoying the film if his weapons disappearing bothers you that much.

actually i dont do that. i just get mad at things that look stupid/silly/like rubbish....
I like the ferocity of the attack and the trail that it leaves but I can see it getting annoying when people spam it, so maybe a cooldown?
we arent talking about that attack that sends a shock wave over the ground just the hammer that smashes the ground, i gave the time that the attack comes up in the gameplay video. the 19 minute long one that u can watch on the d3.com website it happens at 1:59 to 2:05ish then 3:06-3:07
When it comes down to it, it looks cool and smashes face. No complaints here. So what his weapons disappear? If they added in animation for him to put his weapons on his back or side, then call forth a hammer, it'd take too long before the user could swing the damn thing.
