Actually it's a lot like that but instead of directly obtaining the life from lifesteal you have to pick up the orb.
I meant - it is a very similar type of advantage. Except that this time the advantage applies to the whole party and not just the wielder of lifesteal.
Will D3 even have life steal? Has it been confirmed?
Actually globes are even more balanced then most people give them credit for. If you think about it, unlike pots or life steal which could both be obtained quite easily, you actually have to work to get to your globes. Pots can be used by any low level to temporarily stay alive in the fray. Life leech can be used by any underpowered character to the same effect.
However if your char isn't up to the level and can't efficiently kill the mobs coming at you, there won't be very many globes dropping and those that do definitely won't be sufficient to keep you alive for very long.
So basically that's Blizz telling us, "Look if your good enough to duke it out with those monsters, we will provide you with globes to give you some advantage, if your not then your going to die. So it's really encouraging players to play the way it's meant to be played and not hide behind a "spam pots, emergency TP exit" strategy. Innevitably forcing players also to rethink their builds for top performance.
By taking out all those safety blankets that Diablo 1 and 2 used to give to the players, D3 should be much more challenging to play overall.

Perhaps. There's also the chance there are skills of buffs that increase the amount of life you get from any one orb, or allow you to grab orbs from further away.

I imagine it will be somewhat like how they're doing corpses now. Once you leave the screen they will disappear.
That would suck if the enemy monsters chase you over a large area, forcing you to leave the screen. Perhaps that's not such a big issue, and we'll still have potions for when there are no orbs.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
No. Instead, it's been said that there won't be life/mana steal in D3 due to balance issues.
Could you give us the exact quote or the link to the quote, I would like to read the article!
Thnx!

Bashiok said in one of his posts that it may not return due to balance issues. That's all that was said at the time. Coincidentally, Jay Wilson mentioned a Barbarian skill that is essentially a lifesteal skill in one of the interviews that was circulating at the period, and well, WD has that soul-reap thing which is life and mana steal. So it's possible that it may not come back as a weapon modifier, but there's definitely life/mana steal skills.
Some items or skills (passive or active) might indeed increase the chance of the globes dropping, but I do not see it becoming more than a 20% increase, because that would be verging on 50% at that point already, which would mean that every other monster that you kill will drop a globe, which would be a bit overpowered considering the amount of cannon fodder there is in Diablo.
Well, I mean I totally understand your point, but you have to keep in mind, your point is really based on Globes being extremely health efficient. Suppose we get over 50% and every other monster starts dropping one. What if at one point you actually need this much sustenance. What if the Globes aren't as health restoring as we initially thought. What if a Globe which at low levels kind of resembled a Full Health Potion really becomes more like a Light Potion on higher levels due to major increases in health. That would really amp up the need for a higher drop rate of Health Globes. Without overpowering them.
But if I'm completely wrong and Health Globes will always be filling up your health to max levels at quick intervals, then I would agree with you on the overpowered argument.
