Hey guys, sorry if this is a really stupid question, but I must be misunderstanding how the skill system works in D3. Can someone explain what we know for how many skills there are per character and how it all works for the tree and such. I am saying this because i have heard there are talents and skills and there are few skills wich makes it less customizable....im so confused lol. Thanks for the help guys, i was away for the weekend and wasnt able to be on the live blog thing.
well know one really knows how it is going to work out in the end but as for now, they have talent trees. there arent synergies. instead, there are many passive skills that replace synergies. they are encouraging you to have several different skills that you use instead of just lightning or just blizzard. where many people see the game of being less customizable, i see it as an opprotunity to be much more customizable. see in d2, there were many different options, but only a few that actually worked. this will allow you to have many different combos that work. the runes will also add to alot of customization that no game has ever had before. diablo 3 will be a customization heaven.
Looking at the wizard's skills, each tree has 7 useable skills, giving a total of 21. These useable skills only require 1 skill point each. In addition to the useable skills, there are about 7-10 (forgot actual #) passive skills in each tree as well. These passives are things like +3% cast speed per skill level or +1 # of bolt for charged bolt. Basically, they modify the main skills as well as your overall damage , cast speed, etc. You can put 15 into these passive skills, so a bulk of your skills goes into those. Also, to unlock each tier of a tree, you have to put 5 points into that tree. Each tier consists of 2 useable skills (execpt 1st tier which has 1) and 2-3 passive skills.
I personally think this system is great because it will give people the freedom to try many different builds and use more than 1-2 skills throughout the whole game. In addition to all this, the rune system will add another layer of customization to the skills which will allow even players of the same build to be unique.
You seem to be right and i thank you for the information you have given me, but what i see when i look at the pictures is this. Arent the skills that are usesable the ones with the bold frame around them (they are to th eleft of the tier)? If so I see the skills going up to lvl 15, and already if you add up the skills from each branch (going up to lvl 15) there are 16 usuable skills (for the barbarian). If it goes higher (as there is a scroll bar on the right) wont there be more like 30 useable skills and TONS of passive ones. Because the non usuable skills are th eones to the right of the tier right? I see three in each tier, and if you ad up the four tiers we can see (up to lvl 15) it is already 12 in each branch.
I am sure i have somehting wrong and am misunderstanding, but i want to make sure haha. Even if it is only what you said it will kick @$$. Man i cant wait for this game....grrr respecing... >< lol, is there any confirmation on how that will work.
Here is a link to the detailed Wizard's skill tree as it is right now, just in case you haven't seen it. Wizard Skill Tree
It looks like you are right on. There seem to be about 5 or 6 usable skills thus far in each of the three trees. There is speculation that there is one more tier of skills, a level 20 tier, that has yet to be shown for any character. The end result is probably going to be around 15-20 non-passive skills per class. While this number is down from D2, I'm pretty sure the goal is to make it so that each style build actually uses a bunch of different skills, instead of one or two, as someone else said.
There are tons of passives, which are really gong to be how you pump skills and create your different builds. Also, skill runes are going to add a whole new dimension to customization and build development.
Judging from that info and the screenshots it looks like the usable skills will be listed on the left with a frame around them and the passives will be on the right, as you said.
thanks, I actually think i reallyh like this new style as it opens up a lot of customization...dont forget that blizzard...CUSTOMIZATION!!! lol. What can i say, its why we all love diablo.
I really like the looks of this too. It seems to me that the game will still play fast and furious, but that we'll really be cycling though skills and using a bigger variety as we plow through combat encounters.
Just imagine...
A melee wizard with Magic Weapon as a primary attack starting off from range with a fully "passive'd up" barrage of Magic Missiles that slow enemies and reduce their armor, Teleporting in to melee, dropping a Slow Time, and hacking away, possibly unleashing a Mirror Image spell if the going gets tough. Add to that idea the possibility of skill runes splitting your magic missiles, or causing knockback, doing stun on the initial teleport into melee, adding DoT to the Slow Time....I mean who knows. It sounds fun already though!
what i dont get is this "10 points needed"...to be honest the whole things a bit unlcear to me, and its something i wont understand by text alone, im more of a visual learner...

(this build was before D3 launched... looking back on it now - i had no idea what i was doing)
Lets say you go with the Storm Skill Tree as your main tree you use. You level up and get a skill point and spend it. You can only spend it on those level 1 Storm Skills. You keep leveling and eventually you have spent 5 skill points on Storm Skills. Well next time you get a skill point you can choose any level 1 skills as well as level 2. Because you have spent enough points in the Storm Skill Tree to be knowledgeable in it you can now use level 2 skills.
Just like how if a piece of armor required you to be level 30 to use for example, your Storm Skill Tree would be required to have a certain amount of skill points used in it to use certain skills. It's not that different from many other games.
Also I want to note, even with all these skills it seems there will be more because I see no sign of Tornado and you see it used in a gameplay video and there's a related modifier. So it seems there's higher skills we still have seen.
