Several people have gone though the itemized list of removed features and explained why they didn't think they are so bad. In all fairness, I agree -- some of the removed features are ok. For example, I don't mind getting rid of potions in exchange for health globes. This will force players to use more tactics to get around difficult situations than simply pounding potions constantly, so I actually like this idea.
Also, with regards to class specific items, I said that Blizzard said all items would be class specific. This was based on the following statement which I guess I misinterpreted from the gameplay video: "All gear is custom designed for each class and their unique look."
Bashiok later said, "To clarify "can't use" we don't plan nor have any armor items at the moment that are class specific - although the bonuses and stats may be better suited to a certain class - anyone can pick up any chest/shoulder/leg/etc item and wear it. However, there are some weapons/off-hand items that are class specific."
There is nothing whatsoever NEW or innovative about Diablo 3. It's all recycled junk from WoW. Feel free to prove me wrong.
The game seems good so I don't care what game they recycled all the stuffs. It is pretty hard to come up with totally new stuff in a game these days. The ones that success are those that can wrap up the best package of already invented good things and bring their own flavor to the mix.
Also with the new skill system you will be less likely to find the 2 of the same build with the exact same items.
Wrong. People will find optimum builds and copy them, just as in D2. Which means the same items will be coveted.
I don't really see how removing stat allocation matters, if you allowed people to allocate stats, they would just pour it all in vit with min str and dex (with few exceptions). Stats really don't customize at all.
Again, you're over-simplifying and assuming based on your own playstyle, while ignoring the plethora of published web pages that detail large numbers of effective class variants with wildly varying stats. Wrong again.
Stat based items would do the job way better. Say you want to make a build that uses a lot of mana. You would have to find an item that gives you more mana or energy, and assuming that duping is impossible in d3 you might have to use an alternative to the best +mana item, since its rarity would jack up the price and only a few leet and lucky players would obtain it.
This is only the case if you, as in WoW, assume that all classes have very specific functions, which is radically different from how D1 and especially D2 were conceived. Under a auto-stat system, builds like Singing Barbs and Meleesorcs are eliminated, as are the capacity for humorous competitions like Naked Rallies.
Just because YOU don't play that way doesn't mean HUNDREDS of others don't. Stop being so close minded please, its getting tiresome.
That is assuming that the items are exactly the same (stat-wise) and that rares are still shitty and unusable. Also with the new skill system you will be less likely to find the 2 of the same build with the exact same items. I don't really see how removing stat allocation matters, if you allowed people to allocate stats, they would just pour it all in vit with min str and dex (with few exceptions). No duping will make coveted items much rarer.
Show me some builds with "wildly" varying stats, and tell me how items could not achieve the same ends.
The game seems good so I don't care what game they recycled all the stuffs. It is pretty hard to come up with totally new stuff in a game these days. The ones that success are those that can wrap up the best package of already invented good things and bring their own flavor to the mix.
So far D3 is looking awesome.
Not really. There are dozens of great new ideas posted on this forum daily.
@fuzz - So, you don't know how the rest of the world plays? You focused almost exclusively on the Barbarian? You conquered the game multiple times that way? My goodness; why are you complaining about Diablo 3 when you haven't even begun to explore the depth Diablo 2 had to offer? You have no place stating whether Diablo 3 is an improvement when you have no clue what you are comparing it to. You're upset because Diablo 3 does not conform to your very narrow-minded view of how the game "should" be played.
And for the love, stop comparing it to WoW. The game will not be WoW. The two games are nothing alike. They're both made by the same company; it's understandable when a tiny feature here or there feels "copied", but they didn't just slap on a new skin to the WoW engine like you keep implying. Open your eyes. The two games play nothing alike. The two games look nothing alike. If you don't agree, then don't buy the freakin' the game.
Personally, I am looking forward to exploring the world of sanctuary. I'm not getting hung up on "new" or "innovative" technologies. I want the game to run smoothly, not employ spankin' new features X Y and Z. This is the next iteration of Diablo. If that's a problem, go make your own since you apparently know how to make the perfect game.
Wrong. People will find optimum builds and copy them, just as in D2. Which means the same items will be coveted.
Your contradicting yourself..... See;
Right, if that was your CHOICE. In the meantime, other Blizzard sorcs were using their other 3 or 4 maxed skills in situations that made Blizzard tactically unuseable. So just because your playstyle differs, don't assume everyone else is the same.
So yes, some people (maybe you) will be copying optimum builds but don't assume it's everyone. His point wasn't only stating that builds wouldn't be copied but could have a greater range of differences. And even if it is the majorit who copy builds, how would that affect meor you, if I want to play a different build at least with this new system I will have the possibility to do so. Therefor MurderFace's point is valid.
Again, you're over-simplifying and assuming based on your own playstyle, while ignoring the plethora of published web pages that detail large numbers of effective class variants with wildly varying stats. Wrong again.
Really...Like MurderFace plainly put it, please show me these numerous and successfull builds with WILDLY varying stats...You mean a hammerdin..? Oh no thats max vitality..Maybe the Summoning Necro..Or bone necro..No wait those are vitality too. Maybe a Javazon..crap nop.... Barbarian! Ah shit, nevermind, well I guess that just leaves...Any elemental Sorcs with max vit. Or Trap / Kick Sins who also are all out Vit. Druids aren't an exeption either. I'm just tired of looking, maybe you can hellp me...
This is only the case if you, as in WoW, assume that all classes have very specific functions, which is radically different from how D1 and especially D2 were conceived. Just because YOU don't play that way doesn't mean HUNDREDS of others don't. Stop being so close minded please, its getting tiresome..
Ah Man! YOU FOUND ONE! All those amazingly fun builds to play (until after the 10 minutes post-rushing" cuz u cant solo by yourself unless you had two years to do it" when you equip your Singing Barb and you realize that your totally f*cking useless cuz the barb with double +3 warcries switch and Zerker Build brutally outshines you in every department of D2.) Sure your warcries are more potent, but are you soloing Hell, are killing anything at all....or just getting laughed at by the javazons and hammerdins swooping by you. You could pray for them to give you leftovers. Your rooting for non-effective but original one purpose (wow) builds in a game that promotes fast pace mass destruction and epic battles. Your on the loosing side, those builds were actually made to counter cookie cutting homogenous chars which was due to the lack of skill development and not because of the stats allocation.
MeleeSorcs with Max Mana!?!?! Shit you really did it! You gave me one of the only builds that could pull this off... IF, and thats a big f*cking IF, you had enough money to get the 3 or 4 runewords to make it work to get the auras. So once again your contradicting yourself since your ultimately relying on the items to make your build, and not on the Stats. The stats are irrelevant when your build isn't possible without the ITEMS that add the skills, and like MurderFace said (and you denied), the items that could just as well add the stats in D3.
And I can't forget, oh those humourous Naked Rallies....Are you trying to tell me that you actually believe in your mind (and you seem to be a logical and educated guy) that humourous spinoffs would in any way have an impact on why/how Blizzard would design a stat system, wether it's Automated or Not! If you believe that an Auto-Stat system would stop folks from doing weird shit on Bnet with naked chars, then your not taking yourself seriously man. Why don't you try making a half valid point instead of humourous spinoffs of D2 and their great fanbase of hundreds....Im sure Blizzard won't forget you guys and still give you a chance to make your useless but very original builds even if there is auto stats or no.

The only major gameplay problems I worry about is the auto stat distribution. It may just be because its a demo (they don't want you exploring too much, or for some hackers stealing and breaking up the game to see what secrets they could find), otherwise I will be quite disappointed. However, the vast amount of possibilities of skills truly impressed me, especially with skill runes. If done right, stats will mean nothing for me. Not to mention respeccing, I can always try out different combinations of skills, and not have to start a new character each time. I do expect a heavy penalty for respeccing though.
Thank You Ferret for inducing a little bit of sense into this thread.

That is no excuse for not providing normal bump maps.
Normal bump maps create the appearance of dramatically more detail. They are a standard practice for most video games, because they require a very insignificant amount of overhead that is easily done by any video card supporting programmable pixel shaders...which is basically anything made in the last 10 years. I guarantee you, any computer that is capable of playing D3 will be capable of doing normal bump maps with no drop in frame rate.
Not only that, but shaders can easily be disabled for users with PC's that can't support them. In fact, it is customary to provide an effects with several fallback strategies so that if you cant support the best shader effects, it falls back to a simpler one..or you can manually override it. Therefore, there is really no excuse for not pushing the graphic effects much further than this.

Diablo 3 is like a painting. Oh and BUMP-MAPPING != Best game of all time in 2009. Did you play the demo at blizzcon ? I didn't but I know everybody enjoyed it.
Graphics isn't everything, why do you think World of Warcraft, Warcraft 3, Starcraft, Diablo got so great and got so famous ? it was all because of great gameplay, features, innnovation, etc. When Diablo II came out it didn't have good graphics compared to the other games on that time, but look at it ? it's a great success, same thing happened to Diablo.
Do you even know majority who play Blizzard games doesn't have high end computers? why do you think people with old computers could play World of Warcraft, Warcraft 3. Other games you would already need a new computers. Blizzard wants everyone to play Diablo with there old computer's it's such a hassle to buy a new rig just to play a new game. This is how much blizzard cares for the casual people aswell.
You haven't even played the game, only seen videos, screens. Yet you already come to a conclusion the game would suck lol. Everyone at blizzcon enjoyed and had a great time playing Diablo 3. Not everyone has the same vision as you do. Whining and Complaining about pointless things, its like the same thing with Art Controversy, Blizzard knows what they are doing, have faith in them. They are the best company in the gaming business today.
Find another company with game of the year's of each game release for the past 10 years.
If it makes you happy, e-mail blizzard to let EA-Games handle Diablo, they are great at graphics but suck at everything else. lol.
diablo 3 has its own style?
diablo 1 and 2 has, or they share the (realistic) style, 3 doesnt, unrealistic, lowpoly geometry with soft textures,
were have we seen that before?
Ronkis you seriously need to stop trolling, from looking at all your previous posts, it consist of flaming, trolling and breaking rules. Everything also negative about Diablo III, it feels like you don't even want a Diablo III, maybe you should get out of here ? since this is only for DIABLO FANS.

I'll assume you mean the lack of bump maps on the stone surfaces. If you used bump mapping on the stone surfaces it would be on such a small scale it would be nearly unnoticeable, and therefore a complete waste of time. I would rather them spend that time on content. The game is already calculation heavy with the enormous amount of ragdolls being used along with the multiple physics explosions that can be happening at any one time, bump mapping with an unparalleled amount of moving light sources (such as light radius, spells, and environmental effects) would push the calculations past their sys req goal. They are stetching it to the max as it is.
