My doubt is... are we going to have tp scrolls (scarce supply) or the devs will remove them from the game??
If the devs remove the scrolls I'll hate them forever, there are other beter ways to balance the scrolls in my opinion. I cant understand why blizzard never considered these ways:
-Add casting time for town portals (10 seconds casting time and you cant be hit by an enemy while you cast)
-Add coldown betwen the use of scrolls (you will have to wait like 5 or 10 minutes before you use anoter scroll)
Contrary to my last reply in favour of the new death [checkpoint-based] mechanic. I wanted to reply with the negatives that I can think about it.
1) I can see alot of the Diablo bullies trapping checkpoints with enemies as a new pastime
2) If your fighting tough enemies you can wear them down by attacking in between deaths (respawn, attack, respawn, rinse, repeat) until you kill them.
The could easily remedy this by creating checkpoint zones, so that you don't always re-spawn in the exact same spot.
1) Can easily be solved by setting monsters' AI so they don't go into these zones, and when a player goes in one of them then they would go back from where they came from
2) Maybe they could give monsters extra health regeneration while they're out of combat
Now wait a minute, I just though of something. Jay Wilson's reasoning for removing random hostility was that "you could go to town, hostile, and kill you friend." Even though this was completely wrong (there's a down time after hostile for TPs and WPs), Jay must have known the system in his own game. If you can't freely travel between town and wilderness, how could someone even possibly abuse random hostile?
And how can a very forgiving system be tense?

D3 Pros: Outdoors environment, night time environment, female Barbarian, rune spell system, the Wizard class
D3 Cons: Fantasy architecture, fantasy armor, fanstasy weapons, no shaders.
Just shooting this out there but Diablo 3 is looking more and more like a Console game than a PC game. From the demo to what we've been told so far, it looks like it wouldn't be hard at all now to turn D3 into an easy to play 7 button console game. I wouldn't be surprised if Blizzard is trying to go that path assuming Microsoft pays them a good amount of dough to bring D3 to Xbox live. Though the whole B.net thing does discount that from happening.
Town portals has the same problem as potions. It's a broken mechanic that makes the game too easy, Like what challenge can there be if you can just run away at any time and get yourself healed and just go on as if you had infinite hp/mana.
I'm pretty you'll only be able to use TPs at those checkpoints and that's probably why in the trailer Cain didn't just tp himself out right away like in D2.
Then simply do not use the town portals to get out of tough situations... But please, do not use your lack of self control as away to make something good look broken.
I want to go to town whenever I feel like doing so. I do not want to be forced to walk all the way back to town or to some checkpoint who knows where just to be able to sell the stuff in my inventory, buy stuff or finish a quest.
When in a party, I want to quickly get back to the fight with my friends, not run all the way through the dungeon again after respawning in the checkpoint 2 levels above...
I think that this is a step that Blizzard is taking to slowly let us off into the game experience and they are trying to hold our hand a little less. Think about it, how many time have you Town Portaled in the middle of a tense situation, ie Boss fight or the midst of 30 or so enemies, just to heal up, buy more potions or to teleport to a different location and come at monsters again from a different angle and not get surrounded. You have to admit that even though it is convenient, the town portal is a little cheap. I think that the way points are a good system and that going without Town Portals is not too bad of an issue
Remember...Blizzard = revolutionary games. D3 is revolutionary. Compare it to any other action rpg. Nothing comes to mind. The newer fast paced action and addition of "danger" due to the limited or rare supply of TPs. No other games offer this.

The Diablo Series is one of the only games with such a crazy fanbase and no game can top that!
I'm honestly getting more and more disappointed the more I read about D3. I'm with the poster a few pages back. I don't think I want to hear any more about this game until it comes out. I'm sure its going to be awesome regardless, but it seems they are stripping distinct elements of the game at every turn.
Are we going to even recognize this game when it comes out?
They arent going to remove Diablo from the game are they?

Health orbs? please...
So far all that I have seen is 90% copy of every other action rpg out there and 10% of diablo series. And frankly, not liking it. I want to play diablo, not a copy of every other rpg out there

Have faith young one. You will see in due time that Diablo3 will be bad ass. They may remove and add new stuff but when we reach that final battle the diablo surge will move threw you and you will be like "HELL YEA LETS FIGURE OUT A WAY TO KILL THIS BITCH ONCE AND FOR ALL!" Then you will truly realize that THIS IS recognized as a diablo game. You will love it cravor it, have loving moments with it, and rape it. So have faith young one

Simply put I think TP's are just like any other part of this game, they just need to be controlled and made so as to prevent abuse. I think this time around Blizz really got down to game mechanics that should be tweaked in order to greatly improve gameplay instead of trying to just blowout on graphics and new stuff.
I mean they already had an amazing game with D1 and D2, with incredible concepts that were either underdeveloped or out of control and abused. Going back to rethink these features and improving them, will go a great way into making us feel like this is a Diablo game instead of only changing everything or replacing it, definately is the smart way to go.
The TP has always been a great concept that endless games copied but haven't really perfected yet so I believe that if they find a way to limit the time/areas that the player is able to use it in than it could be a good factor into spycing up D3. Just as simple as that.
The rushing of D2 and D1 wasn't due to the fact that they could TP from everywhere, but rather the lack of restrictions on Quest/Area in accordance to Char LvL. If you think about it, not being able to TP wouldnt of stopped people from Rushing since they would of simply had to clear a trail to the end boss for the low lvls. Yeah it would of been longer but that's not a big deal. TP isnt at all the root of the Rushing problem.
agreed! Exactly what I think about TP scrolls, and well, pretty much everything theyve removed or changed.

If you don't like these upgrades, go play Diablo 2, please. Diablo 3 is not going to be "Diablo 2 in HD 3D". It's going to be a radically new game with a heavily refined experience.
Totally agree. I don't really like most of the changes so far but I can easily live with them so I don't care that much. However!!!, with PVP they better not screw it up and make it heaps soft. If they screw up pvp im going to bomb the blizzard headquarters

I do play Diablo 2 and I love it. I'm not exactly looking for more of the same, I'm just afraid of Blizzard stripping this game of things that make it "Diablo-esque." When I first read the article, I was under the impression that the TP would be removed entirely. That would be a bad move IMo. Upgrades are fine, but I don't want to feel like I'm playing another game entirely. As long as it feels like Diablo in the end, I'm golden.
I just didn't like what the TP did to the game. Yes, it is part of Diablo culture, but it absolutely ruined any fears of venturing deeper into the enemy's lair. TPs are part of the reason that bosses had to resort to one-hit kills. I'd rather have an extra large backpack for all the loot than have TPs return the way they were in D2.

1 hit kills were the best, they only 1 hit killed crappy players who deserved to die. lol jk
I guess as long as they change it up and make it practical it will end up fine in the end. Annoying or not, its a major part of the games. To me it will almost feel like something important is missing. They'd have to get rid of the one hit kills. It was virtually impossible to defeat the end bosses without TPs.
Well I hear that when u die u spawn at a check point now, which i don't think i like because it seems to easy. You die u respawn close, u die you respawn close and you repeat this process till you kill your foes. You wont relie on potions and town portals as much, which in my opinion i really liked tps and potions and liked being able to take a break from the game by simple opening up a portal. i really liked diablo 1 and 2 and im scared that they are over doing it. I fear that they are remaking every aspect of diablo that we have grown to love and we will all be disapointed when it is released. Any 1 else getting the same feeling?
Nah.. it's blizzard.. it will be awesome.. don't worry..
Just take the time and let them do their job.. i'm sure it will be freaking awesome when it's done.
