Cain was there when Tal rasha slashed baals throat and used a tiny soul stone shard to keep the demon at bay. That happened hundred or so years ago, didnt even of you read the back stories of the Diablo 2 book when you were going to the bathroom? Good reading material if you ask me, got me through the tough times on the toilet.

SAY WHAT AGAIN, I DARE YOU, I DOUBLE DARE YOU MOTHER ******
I have serious doubts as whether Deckard Cain is an official member of the Horadrim at all. In the journal on diablo3.com, on page 2 and 3, he says this:
According to this, he just made it up, he just imagined it. But of course, as already stated in this thread, there are quotes in D2, like those of Tyrael, that officialy call Cain as the last member of the horadrim. Perhaps, after Diablo had awakened and started terrorising Tristram, Cain recalled his fantasies about being a horadrim, and named himself officially that way, as his childhood stories had become reality. Of course, he has lots of knowledge about the horadrim and the three, as I assume that he used to spend nearly his whole lifetime in the old cathedral (before diablo's awakening), studying books and manuscripts, and so, being so familiar with the horadrim lore and their very nature, the line between made-up horadrim and real horadrim in cain's case is very blurry, if not utterly insignificant.

Ahh, but the horadrim were around many years after the soulstoning of the three. He could have been inducted afterward. He could be Jereds son...

...JARED CAIN, THE /FATHER/ OF DECKARD CAIN WHO LATER WENT WEST TO CONFRONT AND CAPTURE DIABLO, LIVING OUT THE REST OF HIS DAYS GUARDING HIS PRISON UNDER THE CATHEDRAL.
But I don't mean the soulstoning, I mean the awakening of diablo in tristram, in 1265, and the corruption of lazarus and leoric. In that time, the horadrim were long gone, since about 1100, and jered captured diablo in 912. And I don't think that deckard has lived so long. i think deckard just resurrected the idea and purpose of the horadrim, now that diablo has returned. As we know, Deckard wasn't sure what the threat was for a long time. Just during the briefing for the last quest in D1 he introduced himself as the last of the horadrim, when he knew what the hero was up against. And I think that he just named himself that way because it was his childhood's dream to be one of the order.
Unless, Deckard is really more than 300 years old... then I would tend to say that he is either a powerful mage, or a nephalem. but in both cases, he wouldn't write so doubtfully about whether the childhood stories were becoming true or not, in his journal. He would know what was going on from the very beginning, but he clearly didn't.
So I stand by the version that Deckard is no real member of the horadrim, he just sees him as one because he is determined to protect the world from the three, so what the horadrim were all about.
Why would Tyrael call him the last of the horadrim if he really wasn't? Maybe Tyreal kept Deckard alive because he knew that his knowledge would be needed for the coming age of terror.
At the end of Diablo 3, Deckard Cain, before he dies, is going to tell you to stay a while and listen... And this is where he will speak the words, "Hero... I am your father."

This is what you get when people don't read carefully..
Now where does that say that the Horadrim ceased to exist? It simply means they became a secretive order. Since they didn't do much anymore, people forgot about them. Doesn't mean they don't exist anymore. But it makes sence to assume that from this point on, their numbers started to dwindle until Cain is the last one left.
ehhh, cool they changed the timeline. I could swear that it first read, something along the lines of the Horadrim disbanding.
this wouldnt be the first time Blizzard has changed something in the Diablo III website.
Look, before that timeline came out, there really wasn't anywhere near this much question on the subject. The timeline comes out and all of the sudden, we have all this question on the subject. You know what's funny? The timeline doesn't have any new information in it. It covers a period of Sanctuaries history already covered by both the game manuals and the games. We actually know more than that timeline thanks to all the novels involved.
Anyway, back on topic, I would guess (repeat: guess) Jered Cain took overleadership of the Horadrim after Tal'Rasha's sacrifice. At any rate, we know Deckard Cain is at least the descendant of the Horadrim (if not one of them). Of the Horadrim he is a descendant of, it's quite likely he is the descendant of Jered Cain. He has at least has the legacy of their knowledge, if not their power (In the D1 manual the Horadrim were immensely powerful beyond most of the present mages).
If you guys are keen enough to do some research, kindly researh about Jered Cain in www.diablo.wikia.com . It states there : "Jered Cain was a member of the Horadrim. Deckard Cain is descended from him. " There you go. PROOF!!!

In between Light and Darkness, he was born. Outside of time and space he exists.. In this hour of darkness, he is once again called for to rid the world of sin and chaos.....

Wikia is not full proof that Dechard is Jered descendent. some of the info on that site isn't right.

Fuck you, I'm a dragon.
Fuck you, I'm a dragon.
And our arm will be cut off at the time also.
Should'a listened to the force.
Over confidence is the rot.
Deckard Cain could have adopted the role of Horadrim.
