most likely just one. don't know much about the story in D3 so maybe it will have 2 extra characters (maybe old maybe new) and some new quests depending on how the story goes.

Most likely one expansion with one new Act and two (or maybe three, but doubt it) new chars. It's 99.9% certain.
What I would like is two expansions, each introducing one new act and one new class, or perhaps one big expansion with two classes and one new act, and then a series of small content expansions.
I say one, but will not be two or none. All the games released by Blizzard since Starcraft had expansions. These expansions were all high acclaimed and respected. Broodwars, LOD, Frozen Throne and Burning Crusade, all considered the best expansions ever released.
D3 expansion will probably fill in holes like SC (Kerrigan's Status), Frozen Throne (King Arthas's Status) and D2 (Baal's status). So I say an unexpected expected enemy which we encounter somewhere in D3 will somehow be involved in D3. Hell, maybe even the Death or Corruption of Deckard Cain.
Expecting? Like every other blizzard game... just one. However I would hope it would get 2, an action RPG is the perfect type of title for more than one expansion...
but bilzzards game format is pretty familiar by now... make a game, adjust its balance with multiple patches (this is great), make an expansion pack that greatly changes/lengthens the original, anything else unique that could go into a second expansion is patched in amongst further balance changes...

"If we're actually making the game worse with no other reason than to be different from WoW, then it's a bad choice." - Jay Wilson (D3 lead designer)
Actually, when they were pressed about an expansion they emphasized multiple, it was in relation to the prospect of the Necromancer returning in an Expansion.
I see 2 expansions max, because they probably view 1 as the sweet spot and 2 as pushing it.
if they come out with two expansions then the first one will be like LOD with 2 new classes and one act and the second one would have SOME classes from D2 and probley some sub missions.

i think that the expansion(s) will continue off of D3. my guess they know what they want but won't fully give you the ending in the original game they wait for the first expansion. if they make a second expansion it will just include extra sub-missions like character specific missions (i think they said there will be character specific missions in D3)

Yep, I agree. I'm just wondering something.. They said Diablo 3 wraps up this particular storyline. Does that include whatever expansion(s) they have in mind, or would that mean that any expansion(s) will be a sort of prelude into the story of the next game?
Lol if diablo3 is the last one then 8 years from now we will be wanting a diablo4 :DI do hope they dont have overpowered runewords like in LOD and LOD had to many + to skills which sucked and made pvp horrible. Classic duels you gatta use skill Lod you gatta hit first.

Well Diablo 3 in sum will finish the storyline, so I assume that means that all the expansions will deal with that and the last, if that be the first, will give us something to suspect about the next game, they've always set the stage for more. They're masters of suspense.

They've said that this is just the closing of this story arc, not the game world itself. It took them all these years to get the art style right, the second game will come around a lot sooner.
I don't know why they took so long with Starcraft but what ever the case may be they most definitely won't take as long for the third game.

??
Shall I assume that is a typo or should I assume you have never heard of World of Warcraft. It has one expansion released (Burning Crusade) another one officially in the works (Wrath of the Lich King), and there has been mention of at least another 2 expansions. So that makes 4.
With the exception of WOW, yes, Blizzard generally does only a single expansion for their games, and no sequel has gone without an expansion. WCII had one, WCIII had one (technically as WOW is the sequel to WCIII it also follows this pattern and has a expansion/s) DII had one.
Yeah DIII will have one.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.

But if they must make him die I expect a really memorable and emotional scene for him.

Regardless, it's an official expansion.
