Beyond being amazing I don't remember this cinematic in the game at all. More beyond that is the curious ending in this advertisement. Now it would be weird to see something like the traveler leaving behind a piece of what looks like the blood stone behind, because its so damn important maybe. It could also simply be an advertising thing.
What would happen if a piece of Diablo soulstone was left behind somewhere? What if you didn't destroy every piece after you killed him in hell.
Or maybe it was simply for advertising sakes and it means absolutely nothing
I've seen this before, and I don't think it has much to do with the game (that we already don't know). The wanderer dropping a shard of the soulstone is peculiar, but it doesn't connect to the game in any way. Maybe that's where demons spawned etc.? Terror was unleashed?
Since it is an old trailer, it could be a discarded idea.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
i think that the ad is just like the cover of the box.
the skull is suspose to be the wanderer but in the eyes of the artist.
who ever made the ad just wanted to get peoples attension.
Its not ment to add to the storyline. just an eye catcher.

My life is like a dragon, first praised, then hated, now lost.
uh guys the story is planned im guessing because how do you make a series without a set plan (big d's plan) so i think it is significant because if he leave hhalf of his soulstone there its there for anyone to pick up and ....put it in himself and become diablo once more ....think about it they couldve made this specific so you wouldnt realie until you start thinking back to see the future...just my opinion

I doubt Blizzard planned 10-14 years in advance about a small part of one of their storylines.

They originally wanted Diablo 2 to be dark, but they were forced the lighten it up, that trailer is the metaphorical death of the dark dungeons of Tristram.
At least that's how I see it. More of a symbol than what it originally was.

one of the ex-Blizzard North team already mentioned that the current Blizzard team working on Diablo III has changed everything about the game, from the look to the story. So even if they had something planned, It's been changed by Blizzard.
I think, if I remember correctly, that this trailer has been deemed non-canon by Blizzard. Can't provide a link, unfortunately (I don't keep all the info they give out in my favorites, heh, that would just become way too unorganised). Maybe I can find it somewhere..
Edit: hmm, no, can't find it. Well, I suggest you discard my post then until someone comes with some proof.
Blizzard said that the novels that take place in the Diablo universe are the canon source of lore, which disqualifies this cinematic teaser.

it was just an old teaser trailer from way back when used at E3 I believe. It has no baring on the story even though it looks absolutely fantastic for being a "meaningless" trailer.

Blizzard changed the story? The main lore guy who designed the story and quests since the first day of D1 is still on the team and he is the one who makes the story for D3.
Its just a discarded idea. Who knows, the final version of DIII could change a great deal from the cinematic trailer we have seen so far, just like the final version of DII changed from its trailer.
This could potentially play a big part in D3. Blizzard constantly pick up loose ends from their games and fill them in with a sequel. SC and Brood wars took an astounding 7 years before they decided to make SC2 (I believe they started SC2 in 2005). So in any case, Blizzard will bleed their lore dry, and pick up every loose end.
Watch the original diablo2 cinimatic where they have baal explain the plan of hell It's awsome. So is this one.
