The whip would need to be a support weapon. I like the idea of knockback. You aren't going to kill anything with a whip (as someone already said). Unless you whip it in it's eye and it can't see anymore and falls down... And what happens when they get up close with you? Wrap them up in it?
Ah come on~~ This.Is.DIABLO!! Be imaginative ppl~whip is just a base concept, who says its gotta be made of leather/vines?? Or evn solid substance for that matter? Whip of pure fire/ice/lightning seems feasible. Even entire lengths of linked blades, steel rods, spikes, claws, severed demon horns, alien intestines dripping corrosive acid, Tyrael's tentacle - whatever. Aesthetic possibilities r pretty much endless.
Can someone with blizz official forum access forward this idea on there? Really want to try see if Bashiok would comment on this idea and why it would/wouldnt be feasible

"He was so deadly in fact, that his enemies would go blind through over-exposure to pure awesomeness!"
Diablo has left out Katana, and any slight variation thereof. Ninja-to, Yamato, Yamarra, Wakizashi and Sakabato or reverse blade sword, i.e the cutting edge is on the inwardly curving side of the katana, which makes it almost impossible to kill anything with, without reversing the sword.
As for whips, several demons had whips in LOD, so I do not see why a human could not. However that being said, them seem out of place. I have these visions of Castlevania 64 (err I forget which one, the one where the male protagonist has a whip) and the Adventures of Conan the Barbarian show where one of the main characters has a whip.
I do not think you would need a new class to implement such a weapon, since in general the classes in Diablo can use any weapon they choose.
lolllll yea and diablo 3 also should be based more in a futal era and kenshin should be there instead of tyrael. your post made me tickle with laughter but on the main topic this isnt some BDSM game lol.
hell no indiana jones falls into a time warp in pops into the diablo era cus you know that time line actually existed and are government covered it up so we dont all freak out about stuff.. so indy is on his adventure into the diablo realm and he comes across a zombie horse and starts whipping it and then a party member says "wow thats beating a dead horse". rofll i couldn't help over exaggerate my post lol
but a whip and a whip wielding class would be megacool!
ive already heard some magical enchants and such for the whip, like making it split into multiple whips, and flame and poison enchants...cool class but it seems a bit too specific....

YES!! That 9 section whip was EXACTLY what i had in mind when i came up with this idea! Not saying that it cant be a 'Western' style whip - this's just to show that in chinese culture at least a whip is every bit as viable&deadly as swords spears etc. Nunchaku is cool idea too! just make it longer (staff length) then shouldnt look out of place.
About the skill tree, i mean in D2 javelin was for zon only and they made the class work, so pretty sure can be done here too. e.g. Beastmaster - one pet tree, one whip tree, one melee skills tree. Or, someone mentioned a Duelist class elsewhere, think it can fit the whip-class nicely. Whip in one hand, dagger in the other?

I think whips would be cool. Kind of a mid range distance weapon. We've got all the swords which are close range and we've got spells & bows and such for long range. That middle would get something

Also off the topic, "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth." does not make any sense. How can you give something in return for something you cannot gain without giving something in return first?
Even though I only have seen a few episodes of FMA it makes sense to me. You give something up and get something. If you don't give it up you don't gain, or something goes horribly wrong.

Well, the thing is, Javelins were half the tree, roughly. I mean, they could be used for all the skills, but many could also use a spear, and spears weren't made just for the Amazon. Also, Barbarians could use Javelins very effectively. So, really, Javelins were just a Western Medieval weapon that was missing.
Whips, I agree, could be viable. Just don't fall back on the Amazon/Javelin argument to often, or you might fall right through it.
Hmm not a bad idea but I wouldn't want a WHOLE tree devoted to whips. Maybe a section in a tree.
Like 3-4 skills in the beast training tree (if the beast master was in the game). That way they could have some "melee" damage while also some taming damage.
I don't think any class should really have a full tree devoted to one weapon. The amazon was kind of a exception. It was meant to be a pure ranged class pretty much so a tree for javelins and a tree for bows kind of made sense.

The chain whip is heavy but flexible, allowing it to be literally used as a whip to hit, hook and bind an opponent, restrict his/her movement, and to deflect blows from other weapons. The dart is used for slashing or piercing an opponent.

jus rememberd a weapon i saw in Basara 2 (devil kings)~ kinda looks like spinning blades attached to the end of metal cables/chains that u throw out, gut someone, then haul in using the cables - basically a cool whip-type weapon

Its the morning star?! I thought it was a spike ball on chain!
Anyway, whips sound cool, though if you make a class around them, whoop-di-day, 1 skill tree. Now what?
And I still want boomerangs, that was one good idea I've seen on here.

Whip wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whip_(implement)#Whips_in_Popular_culture
When a bullwhip handle is rapidly and properly moved, the tip of the whip can exceed 340 m/s (760 mph) producing a small sonic boom described as a "crack". Whips were the first man-made implements to break the sound barrier.
