For some Blizzard already ruined a franchise, just take a look at WoW, for many fans of the old Warcraft series WoW is a disgrace. After the dust has settled and D3 looks like this and then D4 or some Diablo MMO looks like a cartoon fairyland you will be saying "see they did no wrong, heaps of people play it, they haven't ruined anything", but by then the franchise will have completely changed and the old fans will be long gone replaced by a new generation of WoW kids.
Diablo will never be a cartoon fairyland and from a marketing standpoint it does not matter a single bit if "WoW kids" play it or not. A large player base means a large income which means a large amount of patches, expansions, updates and sequels.
They won't make Diablo any more "WoWish" than it is just for the simple fact they already HAVE a more WoWish game... WoW. It would be stupid marketing for them to make all their games look a like. Similarities draw interest. Same exact graphics kills.
Products are made to please consumers. More precisely the most consumers as possible. That way they make more money and can produce more products, thus the cycle begins again, that's how a business works.
It really makes no difference if all the old fans are gone. MANY companies wouldn't care at ALL. I believe Blizzard is different though, They have done things many times just to please fans.
I for one am I old fan of Diablo, long before WoW came along and will remain a fan as long as the story and gameplay stays interesting and immersive.

Yea, you keep saying that, please. So far there is no "fairyland", and there's never going to be a reason to make one for Diablo.
come on, its absolutely the same thing with the diference on the ONLY one color choice
its like all green or all gray
personaly i would go for the immersive/realistic way
So instead of having colour, you're fine with having a very bland dungeon? And by realistic, you mean having textures on walls look like someone used the sponge tool to extract colour leaving shades of gray? What is there to immerse in if nothing can grab your attention as a focal point and having a very monotonous dungeon with repretitive gray textures? I think it'd feel completely distant, contrary to your 'immersion.'

the photoshops are very far from the ideal, but doing immersive, realistc, full of details 3d enviroments IS possible... and i do belive games needs color, but the way they did with the tristram cathedral is so cheap and awfully done i think its also very far from what we will get in the final. So both version are boring (3 years old look) IMO but i would rather have everything gray than everything green. None of these colors are superior or inferior to one another, but in a dungeon gray makes a hell alot more sense........
my point is that the green version is just as bland as the photoshop
I just want the people who are vocal about their dislike about D3's colors and art direction to ask themselves this :
Blizzard is huge, and they have a rabid fan base across all of their major franchises. They also listen much more to fans and reach out to them more than other companies. Because of these combined traits Blizzard gets a lot more intense criticism and scrutiny on their new products than most companies. So I wonder if the people that are complaining about things like the look of D3 ever stop to realize that they are part of a massive, doomsaying knee-jerk reaction to a new Blizzard product. Ask yourself: Am I jumping to dramatic conclusions and being too hard on Blizzard, or am I jumping on a bandwagon of complainers who seem to enjoy predicting that Blizz will finally release a terrible game?
With D3 and any new IP Blizz announces you guys know that there will be people like you claiming that the end is near for Blizzard. That they have finally ruined a franchise, or that they have finally left fans in the dust.
Such is the plight of a popular company that listens so much to it's fans and makes special gestures to stay in touch with them. They will have dramatic complainers who want to cry about everything and no amount of reasoning or proof will satisfy them.
Funny how you paint those who blindly accept whatever Blizzard shows them as underdogs. We, the ones who care enough to complain, are part of some "massive, knee-jerk reaction", right? Except that the people who are complaining are in large part Blizzard's old fans (a minority that is steadily decreasing, and for good reason), and those who attack the complainers largely bandwagon fans of Warcraft 3, WoW and on. Nice job trying to paint the situation as precisely the opposite of what it is.

Well, please forgive me for jumping in without reading the rest of the thread, I'm sure it's wonderful stuff, but I don't have any inclination to do so right now. Maybe later.
Anyway, I found that instead of Diablo 3 reminding me of, well, Diablo, it reminded me of Titan Quest. I saw a few screens of people simply putting filters over existing screens, and, well, in my mind, they looked great. It's not the substance that's wrong, it's the style.
There was one, even, that just dropped a red filter on top. Looked great for a quick jaunt into hell.

I've been playing Blizzard's games since Warcraft 1. I'm an "old" fan, I suppose. I am happy with Diablo 3, and I don't play WoW or WC3. So that shoots down that theory of yours.
I know the complainers like to say that they "care enough" to complain. But in truth, they care enough to react immaturely and shit on all the work Blizzard has done on their game. They care too much, in fact, as they let the appearance of a game send them into argument frenzies and calls to arms via petitions on the internet. Well, as an old fan, I "care enough" to not complain. To appreciate the art Blizzard has developed and not constantly scream about having things my way.

If you're telling the truth - which, after reading your posts these past two weeks, seems hugely unlikely - you're an exception to a rule you know is true. You're just the kind of person who would scream if it wasn't going your way. Luckily for the rest of this forum, that isn't the case. You're obnoxious enough as it is.

I don't play WoW and I like Diablo 3, You cannot paint the picture that everyone defending D3 is doing it simply because they play WoW. There are people who like it and others that don't, plain and simple.

Exactly. I HATED WoW graphics they were too bright and seemed cartoony. Though some of the elements have carried over I don't feel like it's a massive amount.
Yes its not like i am disagreeing that it has color, It clearly does. Its just not enough to bother me, I would not mind if they toned down the color a bit but not dramatically.

You can defend your position if it's really just a simple matter of taste for you, and I have no problem with that. But people like creepsville are actually starting to appear malicious to me. Malicious in that they hate anyone who dares to dislike the artwork, regardless of argument. Many dislike it based on taste alone, I despise it for its many similarities to WoW (similarities which should not exist between such disparate universes). While many on both sides argue this issue like retards, there are legitimate arguments for a vast change in art direction. Jaded, malicious trolls shouldn't bother entering these threads if they have nothing to say besides attacks on the other side.

That is exactly why I wish art threads were just against the rules for now. Let things settle down for a month or so, and the trolls will leave (not calling anyone specific a troll).
I have seen trolls on both sides of the argument though. People who just come in to stir up trouble and have nothing to really contribute at ALL to a discussion.
"Go play WoW."
"Turn down your gamma."
Neither of those are new statements, we have all heard them before and neither are a option anyone that liked Diablo wants to pursue.
I realize a temporary ban on art discussion would put the mods into overtime though. It seems like it's hard enough to manage things as it is without having to lock every art thread.
I'm just tired of the fighting all together.
Yes I think D3 resembles WoW some. No I don't think its TOO colorful. Blizzard just wants to attract more players, and it will work. Sure it will scare a few away but that's going to happen no matter HOW they make the game, the number may vary but people are going to be angry.
That's just my opinion though and others are free to express theirs of course. It's just tiring seeing the same one line arguments over and over out of spite.

Firstly, there is no "Rule". There is only a concept you made up to explain why anyone other than you could possibly like something that you don't.
And you close with personal attacks. Nicely done. Let me know when you have a point to make.

I'm sorry, but if you want to construe what I said as a "personal attack" then you aren't grasping my point. My point was that many people complaining are simply dissatisfied no matter what they are shown and they find things to complain about because they put unreasonable expectations on a franchise.
They knee-jerk react and don't think about what they are saying. How do I know this? Because it's in their rhetoric. They misuse terms and clearly show that they do not understand the art direction Blizzard has taken, nor do they understand what they are asking for exactly and how it would impact D3. It's like they are demanding that their personal vision for D3 be met instead of Blizzard's. They are selfish and not showing an appropriate version of their fandom at all.
So tell me how is that a personal attack? Are you just calling it a personal attack so you ignore the points it makes? Go ahead and ignore me. I'm sick of you crying about getting trolled when someone's points get to you.
I have a tissue for the people that are still crying over the shoulder pad size, the rainbow, the test dungeon that won't be in the final game, the black spot on the guys shoe, the blue green lighting in some areas, and the gargoyle statue.

Yes i agree, I personally think that anymore threads about the art should be locked until we see more of the game. Its at the point where everybody keeps going over the same things and nothing new is coming up

I remember a few back in the days of pre-ladder reset and pre-D3, back when we were Diablo3.com.
Those were the days...
