Ok so I've seen a lot of talk about socketed items and in particular rune words (as they play a large roll in todays D2).
However I want to talk about gems... from chipped to perfect, in all the colours of the rainbow (OMG NOT COLOURS IN DIABLO....).
I posted a brief idea in another thread that I thought I'd bring to it's own thread, curious to see what people think.
Don't get me wrong I liked Rune words, however my biggest gripe was that they ALWAYS beat out gems... The only gems used in sockets would be say a P topaz in a Shako or some armour for extra MF...
Quick history... Back in D2 Classic and early expansion days P gems still ruled the socket world, with helms/armours with 4 sockets getting P topazed, 4 socket Shields getting 4 P diamonds, and for a brief while, 6 socket weapons getting poison (when it was bugged or something to do rediculous damage)
In 1.10 (i think) They were truly killed off by a combination of; hell mobs being made immune to schools of magic, hell mobs having a LOT more life, the fact that added elemental damage doesn't stack well with skills that use +XX% damage and the fact that rune words were ridiculously powerful.
TLDR? - Heres the suggestion
Synergy
I think Gems need to have a synergybetween them... sort of like set item bonus' where you get 2 and you get a little bonus, you get 3 and you get another bonus you get four (or more) and you get a few sweet bonus', and stacking them makes them multiply rather than add (within reason, so 6 P something isn't > all).
For example, in a 2 socket weapon... one P topaz adds 1-50 lightning damage... but 2 becomes 5-200... Similar for poison, one is 150 over 4 seconds... 2 is 500 over 4 seconds... etc. So it stacks, meaning there is more incentive to chuck in a whole lot of gems, as opposed to rune word it.
The part I like the most however is when you mix them up. Again for example. In a 2 socket weapon add one P Topaz and 1 P Emerald gives it a special effect like "monster can no longer heal" or 1 P ruby and 1 P topaz becomes "chance to stun target" etc. However they keep their initial damage, but their damage doesn't multiply like 2 of the same gem, it just gets a useful effect instead...
The idea with this is that P gems are still useful as the game goes on, as you can get some really desirable effects for end game and with more sockets they become exponentially more powerful.
It is basically like adding a customizable rare item, that is a little more limited in what stats you can get, what combinations you can get, and the fact that you have to actually get the gems. I just love being able to customize >.<.
Anyway, curious as to what others think, also if anyone has alternative suggestions so that they can be useful for socketing over runes?

You're right about the 1.10, that's where runewords gained their power. I personally liked 1.09 over all else they have now.
I think if they just didn't overpower runewords in D3 they'd be fine. BotD was/is ridiculously overpowered, as if Blizzard wants to reward people who run bots.
I'll /second you simply because I liked my 1.09 sword that had a P emerald, topaz, sapphire, ruby(spectral hit ;)) and 2 Amns(14% LL) I also had one with a jah and mal in it which prevented monster healing and ignored defense, which was more for bosses n such. the jah cost me 3 arms and 19 legs though
As it is though, I guess runewords can sort of be said to be psynergies of their own, between runes. I dunno though, it's kind of hard to say much on a system they haven't really revealed yet :/
Agreed, So much I hated hitting when Gems just pointless and in hell/end of nightmare Where flawless would drop like nothing. It seemed I'm a huge fan of gems not so big fan of runes, I really hope that runes are equal with gems, and the synergy idea is picked Cuz that is brilliant. Or (mabye Im wild) Like a cube where you combine 3 p rubys And 3 p topaz
and you get like some orange gem loL. I want them to make it so The highest version of a gem(perfect,w/e it may be) Is hard get, not zod hard lol but maybe like Hel hard Get me?
Yeah I don't think high level runes should have a higher drop rate, in fact lower... BUT I was rather hoping this topic would be specifically about GEMS as there are 20 others on runes....
Also, if they were to make gems more powerful they would have to reduce the drop rate a bit imo.

Eastern Sun mod included, along with many new recipes, "gemwords". Basically you put a series of gems in your weapon and it would produce something similar to a runeword. Personally I would just like gems to have more stats, or be more powerful
Well... a simple "gems are more powerful" fix wouldn't work imo, because then you'll either stack all of the most powerful kind in one item, or they will get dumped for uniques/sets/rares with specific stats you want/need.

However, the gem drop rate should be reduced significantly, whiles the high level rune drop rate should increase.
