I see lol. I mean in essence it kind of is, but in reality I would expect that if someone could do magic the first thing they would learn is to teleport. So a caster that didn't have that ability would strike me as odd. And as long as Blizz is fine with it you won't see me complaining!
It's a nice skill it just started getting out of hand in PvP and MF, then they gave it to EVERYONE and made PvP boring and MF easy as hell. So... meh. If they put it in oh well.
I am sure that they will be back, and even if unchanged from diablo 2, I think it will work very well, here is why. In diablo 2, the reason the runewords were so overused was because they were incredibly easy to obtain due to the duplication methods that did, and do still exist. If those are capped, runewords will be very hard to obtain... How many people legitimately found a single high rune in their time playing diablo 2? So if you are able to put a runeword together such as this, I say that you deserve everyone to gawk at your teleporting barbarian or whatever. I played diablo 2 for many years and the highest I ever found was a vex rune. Basically, I hope they return in a similar form that they were in diablo 2, because I feel that given a hack/dupe free environment, they will be successful.
RUNEWORDS R TEH HAWT!!!

I liked runewords. They added an interesting aspect to the game that I had never seen before in an rpg. I do hope that they're still in, I just don't want runes becoming currency. That's what gold is for.
But it doesn't work fine... I have a crappy ACT I rare axe. Who's going to take it? Nobody. In a normal economy, I'd get a bit of gold for it, and then I'll sell a few more rare axes, and get more gold, and eventually be able to buy a good item.
That's why barter system fails. One person has a gun another has a shovel. What one costs in relation to the other is extremely relative and subjective. What if you don't know the true value of an item? What are you going to do? This happens in DII all over the place which is why I detest trading there.
But if no one would trade you anything for the axe in a barter economy, no one will trade for it in a currency economy.
If gold matters, I can sell it to Akara, and the money I get would be money. Maybe it would be 5 Gp instead of 5000 Gp, but at least it's worthwhile.

You wouldn't know the "price" of an item in a currency economy unless its specifically pre-determined and stated...no different from a barter economy.
If I go to buy a car, the car's price will mostly have a certain "market" price, somewhere around the KBB price. It won't be a totally random price. With a barter economy, there's no market.

You see games offering a shako for 200 gold, is this a good deal? how do you know?
See how much the skako would cost in a store. In any case, if I know the stats of Shako, and I like them, I can still buy that helmet. Even if it was overpriced, it's better than I had. Just like your example. Except I can use gold that I got from selling crappy stuff.
When I first saw runewords i liked it because i got a worng idea.
I though that runewords was a way for you to make great items by farming small weak items.
For exemple, i could make a enigma from many small runes + gems.
But it was really impossible to do that =( The high level runes are just rarrier then some top unics and runewords was ridiculous overpowered...
I think the system above will be implemented at Trade Skills, so no need for runewords !
