Blizzard North's original plan was to do this and I for one agree. Anyone else think this? I'd love to see 5 brand new characters when the game ships. I think it would dramatically increase the fun factor. How fun was it when you got D2 and were like:
'Aw man there's no more warrior, rogue, sorceror.:( 'Oh cool there's 5 new classes now!? Sweet! Now which one do i choose....'
And I realize that, of course, you gotta have the basic archetypes, but I've already seen great ideas in these forums and I fully believe the creative minds at Blizzard can come up with some new characters.
Thoughts?
Barbarian is apparently the only returning character, so you'll still get 4 new classes. I suppose a returning character is meant to make it a little more interesting.
But yeah, I agree. I'm a little disappointed that the Barbarian is returning. Partly because I liked that the heroes were fairly generic, and partly because I hate playing as the Barbarian (and Amazon). I actually don't mind playing the Warrior or Rogue though - its just the feel of the 'brutal barbarian' or Amazon that I don't like.
Still, just because he's canon doesn't mean he has to return as a playable character. He can just as easily (or even more easily) be non-playable.

Also how are they going to explain how the barbarian that helped kill the three prime evils lost all his power? Shouldn't he start off as an insanely powerful hero?
If the character needs to be in the game then just have him as someone we talk to, maybe even fight along side. Now that would be cool...fighting with one of the powerful heroes who defeated the three prime evils.
What other class could really fill this roll that hasn't been used?
Kinda... each class in D2 was dps. The pally could have a shit ton of def with auras. And i once made a sorc with every single stat point put into health. Wasnt terribly effective but i could stand there and let mobs wail on me forever. So each class had their own play styles but they were so customizable there was'nt really a 'roll' they played. It just depended on what type of dmg you wanted to do really.
Well i agree i was also disappointed by his return... i always say that i love change and didnt want any char to comeback.. but if it had to be i wouldnt have chose the barbarian.. but thats just my opinon tough i didnt like him but some people seem to do
Besides the mechanics reason why they brought him back I think they wanted a character we could relate and identify with. So they brought back something familiar, with some new skills and some old skills.
It's because the Barbarian is assumed to be the Canon hero.
Unlike Diablo I where only the warrior was the cannon hero, all the playable characters in D2 are cannon.

Well Barbarian is pure defense, health, and dps.

Pure defense ? I don't know what D2 you've been playing but the barbarian can kill anything as fast if not faster then any of the other classes.

The barbarian of D3 is not the same Barbarian from D2, there's nothing to explain about that.
Now for the subject at hand, i agree that there shouldn't be anymore returning classes, not because i didn't like the ones in D2, but simply because i want something new to play as, simple as that...
I see what you're saying.
And, like I said there still needs to be the archetypes, but there are other types of chars who are focused on melee dps like a knight, monk, assassin, warrior, etc. They can keep the archetype of a melee dps'r but introduce new characters and classes as well.
It's because the Barbarian is assumed to be the Canon hero.
that's pretty Ironic considering the fact that in in every one of Blizzard's official Diablo II art, or posters, that included the barbarian, portrayed him as dead.
Unlike Diablo I where only the warrior was the cannon hero, all the playable characters in D2 are cannon.
All the D1 characters were cannon heroes until D2.

I said Barbarian was defense/hp/melee DPS, DPS as in damage dealing. (DPS means damage per second.)

The D3 Barbarian is the same Barbarian the developers have even said so.

I think they wanted to give us some familiar ground. They gave him some new skills so it's not completely a reused character. Knight, and warrior are pretty cliche, and warrior was in d1. Assassin was in D2 and was a hybrid archtype, monk doesnt really scream major dps/hp/defense to me.

It's tempting for me to want the sorceress to come back, I loved all the spells, and they'd look amazing in D3 form, but if they have a good substitute I'd have no problem with her not making a return.

Yeah new skills help but I still would like some freshness with the chars. And I'm not saying I want any of those classes I mentioned. I was just saying that there are variations on the archetype that have been and could be used.
(please no monk!)
Also, a class can be cliche and fun too. Just look at the sorc

Yeah but I don't really like the idea of a Knight class in Diablo. It's so overused. Also knights are usually virtuous and sometimes use shields. It'd be kind of like the paladin but without the magic or the more intense reasoning of "cleansing" evil from the world.
If they could think of some other archtype for that type of character I wouldn't of cared, I think they just wanted to give us at least SOMETHING to feel familiar with.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.

Barb - Melee DPS
Paladin - Melee Support
Necro - Summoner
Sorc - Caster
Amazon - Ranged
Even though they all have potential to surpass that, that's what they are. I'm sure they don't want to add 5 Melee DPS characters.
He also ties into the storyline I'm sure.
True, I wouldn't want a cheesy knight class.
