I think individual loot drops would be best with a short timer, like 10 seconds. This would give the assigned player a head start, without really prohibiting other players from picking it up if the assigned player wasn't paying attention or didnt want it.
Why ? You WONT see them, that means if he forgot a good item, you won't ever know about it. You only see YOUR own items. Unless he picks his items up and drops them, you wont see his items.

I'm suggesting that after the loot timer runs out, it becomes visible to you. Likewise, if they quit the game. Because you really can't expect players to have such good etiquette as to pick up and throw down every item they don't want for you to have a look at. Maybe for bosses some people would be nice like this, but I think this would be especially useful in regular dungeon crawling...as you are going through densely packed dungeons, a lot of items may fall...and players never pick up anything. If a player passes an item by, you should be able to have a look at it.
That would be stupid. One person gets the amount of loot it's meant to get. What if eight people kill a boss, he drops two items for everyone, they leave and you get 16 items? That's stupid. You get what you earn. If someone doesn't pick up his own loot that's his loss not your's.

It was my understanding that monsters would DIVIDE their existing loot among the present players, not MULTIPLY the amount of total loot by the number of present players.
If the monster produces 5 times more loot overall just because 5 players are present, then this is also stupid, because the monster is going to be 5 times easier to kill...so you end up with super easy to kill monsters producing tons of loot. True, this loot is divided...but the chances of any one item dropping are now 5 times increased, and you can trade for it. In other words, the economy will be flooded with items much sooner because players can take down big bosses in large packs without needing to be very good individually.
Also Dimebag: I just looked at your Blizzard collection. You're missing Hellfire! If I were you, I would play Hellfire in anticipation for D3

Monster does provide more loot for more people, otherwise why would people ever party. In diablo 2 the monsters attempt to scale with the number of people also...more people = harder monsters = more loot drops.

No timer please.
Meh.
You are forgetting internet drop outs. If I come back to the game, I want that loot rather than have someone else steal it.
