I have been far removed from the gaming community for a while now, and the emergence of 'achievements' passed by unnoticed by me. Are there usually any benefits or perks, other than bragging rights, associated with meeting certain achievement markers or plateaus? If not, it would seem to be just a glorified ladder season. In any case, it doesn't appear that an incorporation of an achievement system would be severly detrimental to the game experience.

Idk, depends how they implement it. If I were them, I'd implement a morale system (AKA fame) Where you get fame per level and achievement. You can buy them but the price always goes up, and you can fight for them but you can only gain 1 point from anything and they lose a point. And this would be used for wearing end-game gear
monoxide, normally it only serves as prestige. I have found one game (not counting the Guild Wars series) that offered actual benefits, but the others used titles as a way to say 'I'm better than you.' With no other boost in anything.
I use to but I think I'm maturing out of the whole 'drive' for prestige that i'd never actually be able to appreciate unless there was no one better than me. Considering it, I'm gonna have to be a tester.
I think I am then with you on the issue of the merits of the standard achievement system. The people at the top of the achievement ladder will invariably be more than the average gamer in terms of time to invest in the game. Although, Blizzard could throw us a curve and make it unlike what has been tried before by creating a truly dynamic system above and beyond the standard 'glory' for completing quests/beating the game in various difficulties/reaching level 99 first.
TF2 acheivments are the bomb. They are based on rare gameplay occurrences (like an ubered heavy fisting two people) and you get a new weapon that is different but not necessarily better. Like an axe that does less damage but always does critical damage when the enemy is on fire.
I was going to mention the tf2 achievements but you beat me to it murder. They are awesome. I like steam achievements because they arn't used as a marketing ploy... but I'm sure the blizz points will be. The steam achievements are more for self gratification, or... you can look up your friends' achievements if you look into their profile and look at the games they've played. There is no total "gamerscore" that you can only boost by buying more games(xbx360)....

Maybe they will have something more like enchanted medals of honor in D3. Like if you do all the quest in an act the leader of the town gives you a permanent enchantment (keep people from rushing;)). Five acts per difficulty, fifteen acheivments (If they are planning on showing off all of sanctuary then they will probably have more acts). Plus other acheivments that are more quest specific, like rescuing all the villagers without any casualties, or killing the main boss without taking any damage.
MTV spoke with Jeff Kaplan (WoW Lead Designer) yesterday who acknowledged plans for a Achievement System for Diablo 3 and any upcoming Blizzard game. Read the full Article.
When I spoke with lead “World of Warcraft” designer Jeff Kaplan yesterday about the game’s new Achievement system, he revealed that eventually players will have a Blizzard Account that shows Achievements from other Blizzard games they’ve played, including the upcoming titles “Diablo III” and “StarCraft II.” “Eventually, our plans are for the Achievement system to become an account-based system,” he explained
That's awesome! I love the achievements for the xbox, i just hope it doesnt turn D3 into P2P

interesting thought. Tough i think a game like Diablo couldnt really feel "completed" no matter how many achievements you add. You make them up, usually.
It will be funny to watch somebody with a high score but relatively low skill get beaten by a "noob" who is really good but just doesn't have the high score. It would create a lol-storm in me.
