I was talking about this a little earlier in someone elses thread but I think it'd a good enough idea to qualify for its own thread.
The idea is that there are certain weapons that gain experience as u kill. This could be explained by daemon possessed weapons feeding off the blood of the slain or any number of reasons. Naturally, most of these weapons lvl up faster than the character using them gaining marginal stat boosts as the weapons increase in lvl. Once a weapon reaches its maximum lvl u would be able to take it to a blacksmith and reforge it to its next stage. The weapon then gains a large stat boost, changes look/name, and resets its lvl down to 1. Of course each weapon with this power would only have a certain number of evolutions (two maximum seems likely) and the better ones would take much much longer to lvl up.
This kind of system would not only add another funky aspect to the already large arsonal contained by diablo, but also add more motivation for people to keep on fighting even after they hit the "highest" lvl or whatever they are aiming for.
so a type weapon that is upgraded over time that gains abilities? sounds like a good idea it would make it harder to switch and buy weapons tho, since if you have this type of weapon (soul, unique watev u wanna call it) cuz you would just wanna keep lvling it, but maybe u should keep this one and and have a stronger one
In the movie they fought a fissure with a fissure etc. and they won. Doesn't make sense if you didn't see the movie.
Basically, you can fight fire with fire. Use the enemies power against themselves.
Oh I agree. It just seems this case is different. They want to destroy all demonic presence in the world but they keep one around in the form of a sword?
Just kind of ehhhh, especially if paladin(or other holy class) is a class.
I think this is a great idea, an improved version of sockets. Although, being the gear-collecting game that Diablo would tend to be, one might not want to get stuck to the same item too long!
Also, the weapon mustn't become over-powered. Demon-possessed? Then it might not be a weapon that is always obedient to you. It might come with certain curses or negative attributes as it becomes more powerful.
I would love to see something like this in the next WoW patch, but not in D3. Gear collecting has always been a huge part of Diablo, and thats also what I love about it. Something like this wouldn't fit in the diablo play style

Events in the past may be roughly divided into those which probably never happened and those which do not matter.

I think this would be really cool to see maybe 10% of the games items (not just weapons) have that ability.
And they don't have to be cursed, they could be blessed.
Same principle, and they could still have attribute gain, but their drawback would be they level slower and are not quite as powerful as the cursed items.
Although, the drawback to the cursed items is they have a crapload of negative stats. Or maybe just one negative stat that would screw you over big time if you your character wasn't built around the item.
I like this idea a lot. Good job...(*scrolls up) Tyrael?!?!?!! June 2006?!! You must work for Blizzard!!
You heard it first, right here!! Weapons that level themselves. Do it!! Do it!! Do it!! XD
Now i could see this and it isnt that bad of a idea, though i hope it would be rare, or a implinted type thing, and like normal levels we would need a cap on it, like this is all the item can hold or something like that.
Maybe when you max one out you could use that or move to another one and so on. Then when you have two weapons fully leveled you can take it to a blacksmith and have them put them together to combine the powers. or maybe you would only be able to combine a certain amount so its not too godly.
perhaps level caps, and different possessed swords.
Level caps as in a normal item of sword type X would only be allowed to level to 10. A Rare item of sword type X allowed to level until level 20 and a Unique sword type until 35 or what not. And other possessions could be angelic not just demonic and this could effect the look of the sword. Ie. an angelic sword would have wings on the hilts and strong white glow perhaps and the demonic possessions would have a dark red glow and skulls on the hilts. There could be many different looks just examples. This doesn't have to pertain only to swords it could be to all weapons, however I dont think it would work as well on other equipment, it just gets to confusing if all your gear is leveling up right?

If anything I'd say yes to some sort of holy sword. Like one imbued with the spirit of a great hero for good.
Maybe he chose for his spirit to be altered into a sword so that he could continue to slay evil forever.

+1. I feel like this is something that is really great/cool/awesome, but not in Diablo(I don't play WoW, so I don't care if they put it in there or not).

perhaps it could be some sort of item that you could place in sockets, giving your weapon a certain alignement/look and certain stats. ie. a holy spirit stone or a blood spirit stone.a little too much???

I'm just not for the idea of using demonic entities to combat demonic entities, I don't think the heroes of Diablo work like that really.

That's just me though.
Thats illogical, look at the necro, he raised demonic entities to fight against demonic entities. Not only that but just because its a demonic entitiy does not mean its on the same side as the demonic entities your fighting against. Perhaps its an entity that believes in the survival of the sanctuary.

10.5 Apocalypse.
It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
Erm the movie?
Yes the movie.

I haven't seen the movie but I had heard of it. What does that have to do with demon weapons again?
