They had Kensai or sword saints in Baldur's Gate. They didnt seem so out of place there.
Some of you need to go read the story of Masashi Miyamoto, he is probably Japan's greatest swordman who ever lived. and he wasn't a samurai in armor. He was a rurouni (I think that's the word), means wandering swordsman. A Vagabond.
Or get the manga Vagabond. It's the story of Musashi Miyamoto told in a manga.
I doubt the class is unlikely to appear at all. But I think something more like the Musashi Miyamoto in Vagabond, at least in terms of story and lore is possible in the Diablo series. SInce the exact items used i nthe game is personal preference/mechanically biased.
Yeah man..maybe I shouldn't have used the word "Samurai", because "Ronin" fits Diablo so much better...I believe that's what you meant
I didn't care to read the entire thread, as I am not a fan of this class by any stretch of the imagination. However, what I want to add to the original post is that, as far as heroic lore is concerned, paladins are not really a good class choice. In our own real history, the paladins of past days had a dark, bloody history tied to them that frankly is over-shadowed by the glorification through Christianized Western-based media, movies and video games.
So, even though I don't particularly like the samurai class, I can see why you think they are no better or worse a choice than paladins. Of course, don't forget that real world lore should never trump creativity, and I'm not sure I've ever seen anything indicating samurai would exist in Sanctuary.
There is an island called Xiansai, it sounds oriental to me. I believe it is very possible that we may run across samurai type warriors, either as a PC or NPCs. They most likely will go by another name. Samurai were the most advanced warriors pre-guns. As stated before they could have both ranged skills and melee skills, making them a perfect candidate for diablo.(yes, I reposted this because the thread was dying)
Sharval Wilds? Okay, now THAT was ripped right out of a page of EverQuest lore. Jesus!
imo Diablo should stay European centered since the game so closely follows Judaism, and Christianity... And all i can say for the places chosen is that the crusaders went to Egypt (there were many africans who ventured to the very top of africa and no doubt egypt which again would place them in the vicinity of Europe), and the middle east, and the Spanish went to south america. and then act 1 is quite a bit like Europe, and then act 5 is totally fictional and not related to our planet in any way. Act 4 is from the Jewish and Christian religions.
If we were to have an asian land then they would have a totally different religion and probably be close to the necromancer religion of balance... however all that shit was totally made up in the books. and imo the game only is canon, and the books are just cheap knock offs... anyways if they didnt believe in Angels and Demons how on earth would they react when they saw demons and angels... and as far as we know if they are in the bottom right of sanctuary they would have a long ass way to go just to find something they did not believe in and have no proof of. since everything regarding angels and demons that has happened has been in the areas we visited in d2.
*anyways i wouldnt want Romans or Greeks or Native Americans (and you can see where this goes, i wouldnt want bloody people from hawaii or russians in this game it simply doesnt fit), in this game either...
1. Asians/Orientals that are Bhuddist do not believe in Bhudda as their God or any kind of savior. They believe in God(Christ)...every single one of them(Asians are very religious people). It is very possible to be a bhuddist and follow christian belief. Bhudda's story supposedly occured thousands of years before christ was even born. He was the enlightment, that tought people a better way to live. So when you say that they could not follow Judaism or Christianity, you are wrong and poorly educated. Though they do not believe in heaven or hell, they believe in reincarnation therefore, they believe in the spiritual world, so for number...
2. Why wouldn't they believe in demons? I'm not one to follow what is portrayed on TV, but in every show I see with a Ronin/Samurai, or vagabond type character, they always seem to be fighting with the spiritual world.
3. You say they would never search long and far for something they do not believe in or have proof of...yet President Bush made Americans do the exact same thing in Iraq, searching for "Weapons of Mass Destruction".
I'm not some kind of Pro Asian cat that is stuck on himself and his culture, but I do believe an orietnal twist to this game is long over due.
No, ronin is a samurai who failed to protect his master. Masterless, unhonered bastard.
If he wants to keep his honor, a samurai has to do hara-kiri.
Agreed.
Ronin is a leaderless Samurai who is either about to commit suicide or become a Rurouni (or Ruronoa) if he is too much of a coward. But a Rurouni can also be a samurai who hires out his services to anyone, he has no alligence to any one Daimyo or the Shogun.
The name Rurouni Kenshin, as in the manga/anime translates to wandering Samurai, but I think it's only the word Rurouni, as Kenshin is part of Hemura Kenshin's name.
And Elfen Lied, i thought its 'Miyamoto Musashi"? And didnt know the word 'rurouni'. Seems like the right word to use.
In Japanese language conventions it is last name first, first name second. Thus is name is Miyamoto Musashi. In English it is First name first, Last name second, thus his name is Musashi Miyamoto.
Xiansai, does that sound European to you? Japan is a country that was completley shut off from the rest of the world, apparently much like this Xiansai as far as I can tell. I'll bet you that it's an oriental style civilization.
Middle Eastern at best, Asian at worse. Xerxes was the God King of Persian. His name has X's in it. But sounds more like Xiang Xing. Or whatever that city is in China.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
Hows it possible to be a ronin but keep your honor? Master dying of natural causes maybe? Or letting you free?
technically yes. But towards the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the word Samurai had more connectation with Swordsman that Servant (which the word orginally meant). Thus it was common to see a wandering swordsman around Japan. And of these, Musashi is said to the the greatest. Ieyasu Tokugawa asked Musashi to write the book of Five Rings, in which he describes his sword techniques, so others could learn. Musashi never really did the whole apprentice/disciple thing.

Samurai are awesome, however, I'd be fine if they just made Feudal Japanese style armor and weapons for barbarians

Ranger - Ranged Weapon Mastery (fire a bow or javelins like a machine gun!), Traps (MK style!), Pets (lions, tigers, and bears oh my!) - physical damage based
Demonologist - Bone Spells (Necro style!), Avatar (shapeshift into a demon!), Furies (evil spirits that hang around you, giving party bonuses) - mix of physical damage and magic
LEAP ATTACK!!!!! PLAGUE OF TOADS!!!!!
SLOW TIME!!!!!
im a narutard, and hell no there not putting a samuri in d3. look i just dont think they fit, it's like putting a barb in a show like naruto, it's just WTf.
I love the japanese culture but still the samurai wont fit in... Samurai dosent use magic he uses Techniques so that makes him a pure fighting class and the place is alrdy taken by the Barbarian.
And if im not wrong a Samurai serves its master but also its family so if the "master" died the samurai will serve the next heritage

Oh come on now, you just need more imagination.
It's useless to suggest a class except if you got something really solid, like artworks and ingame footage.
Imo most of the people here would have literally spit on the Witch Doctor if anyone would have suggested it before Blizz.
Cool, i always thought Musashi was just a servant of someone because hes a samurai.
Now i just have to check wiki for 'Tokugawa Shogunate'.
*Edit: done
With a name like Kenzai, which sounds an awful lot like Kensai, or Sword Saint, one would think you knew much about the greatest Sword Saint who ever lived.
Myrmidon
I would avoid the word Myrmidon, what with there being Myrmidons in WOW, and as soon as people realise that all hell breaks loose.
Achilles' Myrmidons are nothing more than elite Hoplites. Much like the Spartans.
Well technically the word is Kensei, not Kensai.
Samurai will want japanese swords (katana's), then people will try to be ninja's and before you know the game is invaded with kung-fu kids.
That didn't happen in D1 with the samurai armor and sword.
That sword is actually one of the best in the game. The armor, not so much.

It would be for all, as it was in D1.

Prehaps. But prehaps there is another way to think about this. NPC. Non playable character. With this newly renamed island in the north (it was previously unamed), with an very asian sounding name, Xiansai, is it not possible to see a character based on the samurai but is infact an NPC, that is to say someone you talk to and do quests for. And is not a playable class. It seems some of you are are too quick to judge things without completely thinking things through all the way or in greater detail.
I am quite amazed this idea has not come up yet. Must all classes suggested be playable ones in d3. Why not NPC only in D3 playable in d4.
Natalya is an assassin, but you couldn't be one until you got the expansion.
And if im not wrong a Samurai serves its master but also its family so if the "master" died the samurai will serve the next heritage
Some not all. As stated multiple times, some serve whomever had the highest amount of coin.

Many samurai served them selves. or am i way off ? i thought that some masterless samurai went around and dispensed justice however they saw fit *usually by the sword*.
and if they made it an npc that would be fine by me, maybe implament it in the expansion. or not. just a thought.
I would love to see it, a high dmg class with mid range considering the length of the katana and the skills he would contain. I doubt it however because it would play too much like the barb and since there are only 5 spots...not likely. I would love to see this char in the expansion, and if done well i think it would be a really fun character to play, it just doesn't stand a chance of being 1 of the 5 initial characters. However I think your on the right track in terms of what could be coming out since I really believe blizzard are gonna surprise us. Everyone is looking back(at D1 and D2) but really we should be looking forward and that is what your doing. . .glad to hear something original esphung.

I appreciate the compliment. We need to get more ppl to think outside of the box.
I would like to know more about that stuff but im afraid it would take me too much time, i have other things to do.
And yes, my name comes from kensei.
When it comes to katana wielding barbs... i dont want to see that, those weapons need special care and practice, not to mention that it wont fit the barb who is all about brute force.
Erm, katanas aren't much different from any other curved bladed sword.
Barbarians use scimitars, that doesnt really fit them either.

If you like to play classes that are asian then you can go and play Final Fantasy. . .
Sorry but I just don't think that it's the sort of thing that's going to 'set' Diablo 3 in the right direction.
Yeah man..maybe I shouldn't have used the word "Samurai", because "Ronin" fits Diablo so much better...I believe that's what you meant
