How awesome would it be if they released Diablo 1 and 2 using the new game engine, leaving everything else the same.
I believe that they could do it quite easily, but more so than that, I believe they should release some world editor along the lines of StarCraft 2 that would allow those gifted in mapping, texturing, and modeling to do so themselves.
Most of the difficult work is done. The art style is done, the characters are done (design wise), the story is done. All it would take is for someone to map it all out and put the content into the engine. It would give a lot of people a reason to go back and get into the series for the first time, as well as telling the story in a simple, chronological way so that no one could be confused.
Granted, I know this will never happen, I just think it would be a cool thing for them to do for the long time fans.
They also said there probably won't be a world editor so my dreams are already dust, but that doesn't mean we can't discuss the idea.
I would love that. I got into D2 first, so when I went back and tried to play 1, the walking killed me. I just couldn't play that game.
I agree, some kind of editor could really benefit D3. Just look at Neverwinter Nights. That game is going very strong, due to the MASSIVE modding community that is constantly putting out new adventures and content. It really would be a win-win situation. The fans get an infinitely expandable game, and the developers don't have to do any work.

I can see modders doing this, but if the games are improving on the previous games, then I see no reason to play Diablo 1 or 2 if the 3rd installment is better.

Fans will make their own editor, don't worry. It's not 2000 anymore, it's much easier to mod any game now.
Actually, as games become more complex, the lack of tools causes complexity to rise. If Blizzard releases no tools at all, I wouldn't put any faith in modders.
Yeah, but it's now much easier to make all sorts of tools easily with many languages such as C#. And actually, games don't get more complex, they just get bigger, but the complexity is the same.
That's not true. Making a shift from a 2d engine to a 3d engine increases complexity.
While D2 has many mods, most of them are no more than simple hex edits. I don't see a lot of D2 mods using custom made characters or enemies. Sure, they can import that kind of thing from other games, but only if they are already done.
I believe there are modders that will be able to manipulate things, but not to the level needed to do what I had in mind.
this would take a lot more work than you think, imo

While it is certainly an interesting conecpt, I wonder whether I would play through the previous two games in this manner. I mean right now I do not keep playing D2 because of the story, I already know that one. I more or less play it because I enjoy that particular game design as it is.
It would probably make me go through the first game however, something I've never managed to do.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

Depends how you see it
D3 is still a 2D game. Unless we're shown multi level dungeons with bridges you can pass on or under. But as for now, this game is 2D.
Diablo 3 is 3D. I don't know how your mind works, but it's 3D.

Beginning to hate all the people complaining about the Art Direction.
it would be harder to create the different class models on a 3D environment. Locations wouldnt be too hard. Isometric camera view (especially if its not movable) helps alot.
The idea is great, but i dont think Blizzard would consider it, no matter how much we'd like to see it happen. Remember how Half-Life was remade with the source engine and it wasnt quite a success, since there was the physics engine, there were cool graphics, but they werent used at all.
Well actually it'd be easier, since the 2d sprites in Diablo 1 and 2 were just hundreds of renders of 3d models.
If all you need to do is change something on the skin, it would still be easier than doing it on a 2d sprite.
i have no idea of graphics development so i'll go with your word. Things wouldnt be too hard to do, then, provided people would have a way to use/develop tools of the graphics/physics engine of the game. Sound files could be used as they are and the locations (at least in Diablo 1 that i had in mind) are pretty limited and look almost the same.
would it be easy to create the monster models in 3D from the scratch as a modder? (asking to people that actually did stuff like that with other games - i myself have no idea about it)

Half-life is a good example of this sort of thing, though, because modders ARE remaking the original half life, not just with the physics engine, but with half life 2 graphics, i believe its called black mesa mod
Half-Life is THE example of a game that lived really long because of modders.
Half-Life Source, made and released by Valve wasnt as successful as most of the unofficial mods released. I have heared about the Black Mesa mod but havent really looked into it. As i have Half-Life 2, i'll probably give it a shot when its out cause i really liked Half-Life.
The idea is very possible. The question isn't whether it's possible, or even whether Blizzard would do it or not, but whether the means necessary will be there. I believe some sort of world editor should be included. I think everyone can agree on that.
The reason I want the games remade in one way or another is so I don't have to play a game in 640x480 or 800x600. It's ridiculously ugly. I would be equally happy with a patch that would increase the resolution on the previous games without any glitches. There are hacks to run D2 in any resolution you want, but there are problems involved that can't be fixed.
I also think it would benefit those who haven't gotten into the series, but would like to without missing out on the previous entries. While reading all the lore is nice, nothing compares to living it.
it would require the team to work on the games for some time to achieve decent quality.
If such a thing is made by a mod team, none says anything bad. If on the other hand a real developer team screws up, then the criticism can (and probably will) be hard.
I also dont think Blizzard will include such an editor for Diablo 3. They traditionally did so for their Warcraft RTS series only to make maps to use on multiplayer too.

Anyways, yeah Half-Life 2 has a lot of mods going on, which is awesome because it extends the length of a game, and allows users to create basically anything they want. If Blizzard did release some tools to mod Diablo 3, then I'm sure some modders will recreate diablo 1 and 2.

an array of tools is needes to make a real mod
just a note though
