The only reason they look anything like wow is because they are painted and flat, which is pretty much unavoidable unless Blizzard decides to put bump maps and or Normal maps in the game along with shaders that would give different materials realistic qualities. However since they want the game to play well on older systems I don't think they will include these. Since the game is pretty low poly.. (not nearly as low poly as wow though) and all the textures are painted and flat without the use of normal or bump maps, there is really going to be little to no way around this similarity. However the game would definately not look better if they slapped photos on all the flat geomoetry, that would look rediculious.
No shaders, no bump/mormal maps, and painted textures by blizzard artists = WoW like appearence. The only thing they could possible do to make it look really different is to use dynamic lighting in a dramatic fashion in parts of the game. This would create an eerie and realistic creepiness if used correctly in a dungeon or something of that nature. I.E. yellow candle light flickering of the walls and charatcer casting long shadows on the floor.. etc..
Ok, lets do a comparison, lets taking out almost all the WoW like components we end up with something that to me looks pretty awesome. Take stupidly oversized rubber shoulder pads, fat rubber sword club and scale them more normally, take out the smiley lions and the green hue and add a little detail and you have something that to me looks pretty damn nice and actually like a Diablo sequel. It STILL looks stylized and blizzard like but without the childish influences.
this isnt a thread to discuss the art of the game. Its a place to discuss if you'll buy it or not.
I'm terribly bored to answer to the same (pretty stupid) arguements all over again.
The (vast) majority of the Diablo fans (and almost all of the oldschool members of this forum) agree that this (the current art design) is the right way to bring the franchise forward.
Blizzard already reacted to all the whining (cry more WoW haters) and said they'll keep working the way they did to ensure a great game is released.
I certainly don't mind the smaller shoulder pads on the female Barbarian, but they looked fine on the male barbarian, for some reason I don't think the shoulder pads were scaling correctly in the demo we saw.
That being said I don't like the desaturated color pallet of the photoshopped images and that filter that was used over the image would be akin to adding bump map textures to the game, so again I don't think blizzard is going to opt for this, but they might. I defiantly would not want a camera filter that looked like that over the whole game.
It's fine to make suggestions and give examples to get your point across, however since this is still a pre-alpha build I'm expecting more details to be added to the environment, characters, and textures anyway. If you noticed, that staircase's banister is actually more detailed than the lion model and column at the end of the it which I find to be odd. It could more than likely be an unfinished art asset. I still think its much to early to jump to any sorts of conclusions about the game in terms of grpahics.
I dont care what it looks like as long as i dont 'feel' (emotionally) that I am playing titan quest. And I KNOW that when I am PLAYING (not just watching) it will be a different experience!

My image hardly has any filter applied over the image, I hand painted more contrast into the detail in the textures and added bits of detail here and there, and simply reduced the green in the image, its not massively desaturated. In fact I was surprised how taking out the green affected the image, it kind of proved just how flooded with green the image was. Your are right to some extent, but I have seen far too many games ship with half finished assets to let this slide, if they were considering changing it then maybe this petition will push them along a bit. I too am hoping a lot of this stuff is temp assets copied from WoW and odd problems like incorrect scaling on the armor, but there is a chance its not.
-edit- and I have asked this before and got no answer, but absolutely honestly if you were forced to choose an image of those two that looked most like WoW and an image that looks most like the previous Diablo style, which would you pick?

Huh? the vast majority? where on earth are you getting this from, the majority in all the polls relating to this around here have wanted change, these are all people who are unhappy. On your side of the fence you have all the WoW loving newcomers who are interested in WoW with Diablo gameplay, all the people who just want the game asap, all the people who dont realyl care. Take that into consideration and its probably more like 90% that would be happy with a reconsidered artistic direction!! Almost all the "oldschool" members? were you around before there was even a word breathed of D3, do you remember everyone saying "omg I hope they dont make it look like WoW" or "what are your worst fears?" and many responding that the worst thing that could happen would be for it to the influences by WoW?
This is an unmeaningful question if you ask me. Blizzard's efforts to improve and expand Diablo 3 relative to its predecessors stems from the need to maintain its credibility and customer loyalty. It was never about how Diablo III will sell. Hell, even if blizzard decided to go with a non-innovative approach and just add more content utilizing Diablo II's existing game mechanics, people would still buy it nonetheless.

and remarkably only 80% say they would, seems like a hell of a lot are thinking about not getting it for a Diablo fansite =S

Yes, out of around 200 some voters, what a huge sampling that is.
I like how you keep glossing over the fact that only 5% even said that they absolutely would not buy it. Not 20%. 5%. Staggering difference when you spin the facts around, I suppose.

Agreed!
Anyway, I would buy this game because ITS THE SYKEST SHIT EVER! I am proud to say that I am a 100% map-hack user in D2 and I ABSOLUTELY HATE THE LIGHT RADIUS.
It was so dark, that I had to turn my gamma higher just to see a damn thing in the cave.
(well maybe i over-exaggerated, but you get the point)

Agreed, too much emphasis on "darkness". Darkness does not equal intriguing/horrifying. But it does cause eye strain and frustration!
I'm telling you, all these haters will be too busy playing the game when it is released to even notice the graphics, much less waste time complaining about it.

Spin? try some English comprehension, 18.39% were unsure (or actually saying they wont get it), as in they are considering not getting it, not that they aren't getting it. Your right, it isn't a huge sampling, but it wont be hugely far off and even if it was 10% I would be surprised.
-edited because some people may need everything to be totally correct and not understand that I am correcting him in saying that 'considering" not getting does not equal "won't get it" like he seems to think I said.

If you like playing WoW. Basically if the environment doesn't get a serious overhaul I'll quit D3 in a couple of months. Because I would have already played it for 4+years (assuming it's release in Nov.)
I very much enjoy the artwork, and consider it a significant improvement over the bland colours and textures of quite a few locations in Diablo II. Diablo I had some very flovourful artwork that added to the dark mood of the game. And yet, Diablo I was limited to a single series of catacombs under a corrupted cathedral/monastery and the deep levels of Hell, where such artwork was very appropriate.
Diablo III will likely be as varied (or moreso) as Diablo II, and as such a variety of artwork is appropriate. If the dungeons are not quite as dark as they were in Diablo II, I can only assume the change was inacted to improve the quality of the gameplay. Honestly, how many people playing Diablo II entered 'The Pit', 'the Underground Passage', 'The Cave' or other such areas where light was limited to a small radius? I have never heard praise or appreciation for, much less frequent play in, these areas, until this whole "artwork direction" brouhaha started up.
I am left baffled.
For the record, I have never played WoW, and couldn't care less whether or not the artwork of Diablo III resembles the artwork of WoW. I am sure there are many other like myself that don't care for comparisons to WoW, as we would rather see the artwork for Diablo III judged on its own merits, regardless of possible origin or influence.
I voted Yes on the poll, Even though I have Signed the petition to have the art work made abit darker/Creepier.:)
I voted Yes, Simply becuase I have been playing Diablo since Diablo1 was released, and even if I think the "mood" of the game is shot, (by this i mean it no longer has that "dark and foreboding atmosphere");) It's a Blizzard product and a Diablo series game and I "KNOW" the gameplay will be just as good as or better than the other games.

Your edit completely destroys your point about English comprehension, and in fact makes you look like a fool. You need to re-word it, or I have no reason to pick at it, as it simply defeats itself.
And, yeah, a sampling of 200 is going to be "far off". But don't take my word on it, see for yourself. I'm sure if this poll were taken once a month until Diablo 3 released, you'd see that 80% grow steadily, whether the art direction ever changed or not. Much like Reverend Wright, this will soon blow over; forgotten except within the most elite circles.
I'm not sure. I already know what the gameplay will be like to an extent so it isn't anything new. If the game isn't visually pleasing to me, has a typical story (oh no, Diablo is back because the worldstone was destroyed!), or is somehow less than amazing I won't get it.
This entirely because the last 10 or so games I have bought have been utter disappointments.
If you don't see why you are wrong in claiming I said "20% wont get it" as opposed to me actually saying "20% might not get it" then I am not going to try to explain again. You WERE wrong about that, your probably not wrong about the other things you have said though.
