I hate to say it but it looks like Blizzard is taking a more WoW approach to skills and skill allocation for Diablo 3.
More Diablo Less Wow... IMO
Wtf Diablo 2 skill system was broken Why would we want it again? We want an improvement. I don't give a shit if it's from WoW or Need For Speed, just make it better.

I agree. Basically, if something works well...use it. I don't want it to be exactly like WoW because this is a new game and I want it to be different. But the WoW point system is good so it would be a good place to start when trying to come up with a new system. There are tons of things in D2 that transfered to WC3 and WoW that made them 'better' games it would be ashame to use the same point system as D2.
Humm to disapoint u but the 1 point u put "but they are wasted" simulate ur character developement. Its like that u say i want to run whitout being able to stand up or walk... don't really make sense to me.;)
I feel likes theres more unity and fullness in the d2 skill chart with prerequisites yet I don't think we should have em
Ooo I have an idea
taking the barb for example
combat tree
defense tree
warcry tree
each tree has 5 different ranks kinda like d2 with the level 6,12,18,24,30 as ranks
there would be a level requirement just like in d2 but now instead of having arrows pointing as prerequisite skills, you have a requirement for each skill rank
for the level 6 rank in the combat tree you have to
1. be at least level 6
2. kill at least 100 monsters
for the defense tree this requirement might be to wield a shield and helm, something easy and playful
for the later ranks, like level 30 you might have to have killed 15000 units or IDK blizzard will come up with the ideas...but you get the point
the rank requirements can even be quest related or clan related
That's right. D2 was flawed in this sense. No skill should be useless. It's just a broken system.
And what was up with consecutive skills that were very similar, with the latter ones being more powerful. Wtf is the point of having the lower ones? Oh, synergy...lame.
STUPID implementation.
We need unique and self-sufficient skills that are usefull in different scenarios. The player choosing these skills chooses them according to their playing style and HOW they want to achieve their goal.
I don't know about anyone else but this makes since to me. You would have to be able to shoot a small ball of fire before you can shoot a huge ball of fire that explodes. I do believe that in real life you have to be able to do basic math before you can do advanced math... you have to be able to drive a car before you can drive a commercial truck, etc...

100% agree, D2 skill tree wasn't broken. Stop crying. Synergies are awesome !
D2 skill tree was very broken because you don't need 20 points in fireball to get meteor. You needed ONE point in fireball, firewall, and firewalk or whatever...
Now, if we had one skill, which originally was called flame arrow, and at 5 points it became fire bolt, and at 10 fireball, and at 20 it became like meteor except instant cast, that would be a whole other story.

That would be nice but what if i just want to use a little fireball for fun... it just becomes the same as what you said when you have to put 5 points in fireball and after that you unlock firewall
i really liked the idea of the skellys from necro who became cooler with more points tough they should keep that with most of the skill... but i agree with the fact that no skills should be useless that just isnt fun cuz you waste skill points on something you dont want or wont even use...

You fill synergies later, depending on the build... you don't get 20 teeth, then 20 bone arrow, then 20 bone spirit? No, you get a bit of teeth, 20 bone arrow, 20 bone spirit, and THEN teeth which makes no sense whatsoever.

I'd like to see someone do that. "For fun" doesn't belong into gameplay calculations.

You don't unlock firewall due to having 5 points in fireball. You unlock firewall due to being level 12 (18?) or whatever. That's the issue here. You can get to firewall with just one point in fireball.

i once added like 7 to hydra for fun...but i was a noobie back then
and sure you can get firewall without adding points to fb.

Errr, they didnt make diablo 2 with rushes in mind. I mean, If you are playing legit, try to kill those monsters with your level 1 firebolt, or lvl 1 fireball until you are lvl 18. you will HAVE to put more than 1 point.

i know that was a suggestion of what could be in a perfect world

you could need 5 ponts in fireball then unlock firewall or something
i wasnt referring to whats happening in D2 i agree thats its flawed and need some work and it probably will be better in D3

No, you can put points into ice and lighting trees. Also, getting to level 18 is pretty easy. Doesn't really take that much time. My beginner sorcs usually use a ton of combo spells: frost nova (aoe freeze), static field (cripple), ice blast (to freeze), fire bolt/ball (damage), inferno (at lower levels). Static field works on anything and finishing off monsters that were grieved by it is pretty easy. Not to mention that ACT I can be meleed pretty much. I get to level 18 about the same time as I get to Andariel. And that's being a total DII noob.

Wrong.. if you make orb sorc you do exactly this.. level 1 glacial spike to kill monsters up to 24 level when you get blizzard that helps a bit. If i put 20 ice bolt at start .. it probably starts to suck at act2 end already.. the D2 skill system just SUCKS ASS.
How about end this feud over skilling points and try to stick to the topic. I mean sure there was alot to be angry about with skilling skills you wont ever use, but I think blizzard was just trying to make it more versatile and unique. Any game can just have you skill whatever you want, but the thought of a skill tree was unique. A spell that upgraded into later levels into something more great. So in order to get those cool spells, you had to go through the tree process, i.e go through tedious and sometimes lame fire spells.
I'm thinking they might get the diablo 3 skill tree like WoW. Keep it on a tier based skill tree level. Using a certian amount of skill points to get the next tier of skills seems a bit more balanced.
One thing no has mentioned yet is the fact that Blizzard did announce that they were trying to find a happy medium in respec. It this is true then it is completely possible to put a couple points into a skill then take them away later when it isn't as useful, I just hope they stay away from being able to completely respec a character, it takes away the fun of creating more then one character of the same type.

yea i agree there are quite a few useless skills and i hope there arent too many debuff skills (like curses from necro which were mostly useless) unless they are very strong and have a big aoe or are like an aura that travels with your character because otherwise they dont make it anywhere in a fast paced combat game like diablo
