To everyone saying the WD doesn't 'fit' in the Diablo world...did any of you play D2? Act 3 specifically? Come on!
Agreed!
There are so many aspects of Diablo that *shouldn't* fit - just look at the Amazon (c'mon - where is the Amazon river in Sanctuary?) - or the fact that the Paladin is adorned with a Christian cross - also a quick glance at the world map shows place names from all cultures of the world (they have Arabian, Nordic, Chinese, Irish, Indian, etc, etc.) - heck even the name of the game - Diablo - It's SPANISH!
It all contributes to the diversity of play. At least give them credit for trying to break a little of the medieval RPG mold.
I actually just got back from visiting Kenya where I had the opportunity to visit the Nairobi National Museum. On display were a number of items formally owned by a genuine witch doctor that had died. Based on what I saw of Diablo 3 so far, I think Blizzard could better represent the African image by making him look a bit darker, without as much brightly colored clothing.
However, perhaps Blizzard is not entirely concerned with being historically accurate.
Or perhaps you are confusing Diablo with real life.

Blizzard is seemingly trying to mix African, Caribbean, and South American tribal customs and styles in their version of the Witch Doctor. A bit of an amalgamation rather than a translation of any one thing. Personally, I love the Witch Doctor class.
stopped reading there, this is obviously a immature thread. people don't understand what a gameplay demo is obviously, let me explain.. its demonstrating stuff in the game that will spoil a very bare minimum. Do you expect them to show.. all 5 classes fully decked out going into the final dungeon taking down the final boss of the game? i mean fucking-a get some common sense.
sorry if this post is rude, dude.. but these threads seriously piss me off.
The Witch Doctor behaves more like the Druid than the necro. Allow me to explain:
1. The WD and Druid both have summon spells that are not the focus of his power.
2. The WD and Druid both have damaging spells that can be the focus of his power.
3. The WD, like the Druid, has skills that pass an effect from enemy to enemy, similarly to Rabies.
All of these make him function much more like the Druid than the Necromancer. The parallels go further than just "lol fire and ice".
Where's the uber cool werewolf form tho? =((((((((

Personally, I love the new witch-doctor idea but I hate the name and the fancy purple glow. I like the character design, just not the colours and the name =S
As someone else mentioned, even shaman or warlock sounds much more badass
I completely trust Blizzard, as all of their games were best-sellers. The witch-doctor may be very interesting and is NOT a clone of the necromancer. And for the ones who say ''Fireballs are only for sorcerers!!'' this is totally false. Much characters had elemental attacks in D2 and they weren't related to the sorceress.
I do hate the name of the witch-doctor but the main concept is that it's some kind of voodoo shaman using natural summons, spirits and alchemy for his skills. (By the way, for the fireball again, if you look in the video, you will see a fire spirit at the place he has thrown his fireball.)
Ok... A lot of people here have been saying over and over again that the WD was the wrong choice for blizzard because lots of people don't like it.......
Well, to be perfectly honest... No...
Whether or not people like the character has no sway over whether or not he is added. Even if every single person besides blizz thought it was the most stupid idea in the world the choice is still in there hands not to mention the fact that a good portion (Me included) think that the WD is an excelent addition to the Diablo world...
On another note... There has been talk in this thread about there only being 5 classes and that it is ok because D2 only had 5 classes... While I admit that it is blizzards choice in the end as to how many classes they put in I also do not think that, that is a valid arguement... There may have been 5 classes in D2 but the fact is that D1 had only 3... that right there sets a standard of increase but just to affirm it LoD also added in 2 additional classes, still following this code of escalation. At this point, because of this upward trend, it *definately* was an unwelcome shock to those who just expected more.
This is not to say that blizzard is wrong in its decision but only that I do not aggree on a personal level based on past performance...
When the game is released, everyone who now says they think the WD is crap, will either a)want one in their party, or choose a WD themselves.
Personally, I can't complain about anything because I want to play the game that Blizzard makes, not what all the shallow, narrow-minded "fans" want them to make.
Being a really class specific person, I have only ever played the Necro and Pally in DII and gotten them several times to 99. The unfortunate truth is that blizzards needs to innovate in their concept and someone had to go. No matter what class they picked to replace it would still result in controversy and unhappy fans. This is frustrating for many and especially the more traditional of fans like myself but all we can do now is make blizzard understand that the expantion should contain those classes that where missed out in DIII.
Hmm, sounds kinda juvenile. If you knew anything about witch doctors, you would know that they are pretty disturbing and crazy dudes, which fits perfectly in a world with deranged demons running about. He looks wierd and ugly? So do half the things in Diablo. Should he look like Sailor Moon? Also, its not a fireball, its a fire bomb. The reason it is relevant is because, traditionally, witch doctors are known to use different conconctions to either heal or curse. The fire bomb is a reference to a volatile mixture (think molotov cocktail) that a witch doctor might make that is imbued with curse properties, so it is indeed more like an explosive device rather than a ball of fire, hence why he lobs it instead of shooting it hadouken style . Totally not the same sort of thing as a fireball from a sorceress. As far as his spells being all over the place and uncool, well again you sound juvenile. Something like locust swarm fits the wd perfectly, as does everything else he has. You wanna talk about being a worthy replacement for the necro, he is it. The necro had the most unimpressive spells in D2.
Awesome opinion. Thanks for making a thread to tell people that at the end of the day don't care.

Long, long time Diablo fan; short, short time with DiabloFans. I'm not gonna pay close attention to any of the classes until the game is about to be shipped.
If you watch the interviews, right now they are basically just trying to start a foundation and many things that they have for each class might not even make the final cut. If you have been following SC2 you have realized that as the balancing continues until the game is released, many things are going to get cut.
This balancing of the characters I think will improve your outlook on the Witch Doctor.
The witch doctor has awesome spells and abillities if you ask me. I mean Blizz did a great job with the kiling your own pet for an explosion... buffing with attacks?? That's actually pretty awesome I must say. Another thing i liked about the WD was its long range with firebomb
Firebomb is cool, and sets all their corpses on fire

The thread starter complained that the character model was too ugly?
Aren't 34k people trying to get the game more gritty or evil yet one character actually does look "ugly"(IMO he looks badass) and you are complaining about it?
It was a disappointment that there are only 5 classes in D3. I think the witch-doctor is a bad replacement for the undead-caster. Most importantly, he is a waste of one of the five precious classes.
Why?
[quote name='sammyly02']Primary reason:
He looks so weird and ugly.
The barb looked like a retarded wanna-be he-man meets Conan in Diablo 2, and he was pretty bad ass.
Quote from "sammyly02" »
His class name even sounds weird. it doesnt sound dark at all! I would much prefer the warlock, shaman, and best of all, the necromancer.
The class name isn't weird. That's nit-picking.
Quote from "sammyly02" »
I am not a hardcore fan of the necromancer, but if you are going to replace such a meaningful class, please choose wisely.
I agree on this only because they mean so much in the books, but I think not having them in Diablo 3 is probably best as far as the story goes.
Quote from "sammyly02" »
Why does the witch doctor have a fireball spell? THIS DOESNT MAKE SENSE. Fire should remain unique to the sorceress (unless you have elemental traps like the assassin in d2).
But a plain fireball spell?
Wasn't it actually more like a molotov cocktail??? Like a firebomb? Or wasn't it CALLED fire bomb?
Quote from "sammyly02" »
I like the undead wall. The mongrels, locust swarm, horrify and other spells are pretty uncool.
lawls... Horrify=Terror which was a Necromancer spell.
Quote from "sammyly02" »
The barbarian totally overshadowed the WD in the gameplay trailer.
Uh no... everyone was talking about the "new witch-doctor class with his wall of zombies spell" after the credits rolled. Not the "new revamped barbarian who can... you know... jump around still"
Anyways.. not to rain on your hate parade. I don't really like the witch doctor as much as the Necromancer either, but I'm pretty sure we have a good chance of the necro being in an expansion if that happens, so lets not get our hopes up. It's not like they're completely removing them. They can't...
Man, what's with these people correcting me with things that i have already been corrected with? To the poster above me, thanks for the reminder, but nothing you said was new.
As a counter-argument for those who keep saying "Blizzard said the WD is not replacing the Necromancer"
The necromancer will NOT make an appearance in D3 as long as the witchdoctor stays
(THIS STATEMENT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH D3 EXPANSION.)
They've introduced 2 Classes
1. "Close-Combat-Physical Type" [Barbarian]
2. "Dark-Caster Type" [Witch-Doctor]
3. "Ranged-Combat-Physical Type"
4. "Elemental-Caster Type"
5. "Holy-Caster or Paladin Type"
"Assassin-Type"
So there we have it. Barbarian, Witchdoctor, Amazon, Sorceress, and #5. With the Witchdoctor acting as the dark-caster type, there is no room for another dark-caster [my beloved necromancer]. As for Amazon and Sorceress, there class names will probably change to fit the male/female function. I refused to call some classes a Warrior or Rogue Type because of the anti-wows in here.
Producer Keith Lee gave several hints towards the replacement of the necromancer.
1) "What do you think about the Witch Doctor possibly replacing the Necromancer?"
2) "If you played “Diablo II,” does it really matter to you?"
3) "And I think that one of the things that might be hard is the fact that we might have to give up a few character classes that people loved in ‘Diablo I’ and Diablo ‘II.’"
Again, let me repeat, Diablo III Expansion MAY or MAY-NOT have the necromancer. What I am trying to say is, for Diablo III Classic, the Necromancer is gone.
Haha, that is unless they get rid of the Witch Doctor, then the necromancer will have his place.
EDIT: Btw, imma change my thread post so that people won't point out the same mistakes over and over again.
