I don't think it would KILL anyone to have guns in Diablo, you just have to understand people's aversion to them in the game in the first place.
And I'm sure many people here will attest to the idea that just because it's good in WoW does not mean it needs to be in Diablo. (That argument starts enough headaches as it is)
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
It's time to welcome the other 80% of the color wheel to a Diablo game.
A subtle slight against anyone who isn't anti-gun? I assume so by the enthusiasm coupled with all caps and the use of simple or childish (maybe even mocking) language like "oh boy".
You know I almost stopped reading after the first few sentences...
It wasn't a slight at all against anyone.
When I think HacknSlash I think "OH BOY MELEE WEAPONS!". Lot's of people are excited about different things, but most people don't think "OH BOY GUNS!". There are already games based heavily on guns, though they may not be hacknslash.
You're right though. When people think traditional hack and slash, they dont think guns.
Did we expect skill trees in Diablo 2? Or Runes? I guess those things shouldn't have been in the game.
Skill trees are a game mechanic, almost nothing to do with items or weapons. Runes, are pretty commonly used in medieval based games. Maybe not how D2 had them as socket items but many other games.
For example Ultima Online had runes you could set to mark a certain place on the map and then recall yourself to that place.
Warcraft had the runed blade Frostmourne. etc etc.
A subtle slight against anyone who isn't anti-gun? I assume so by the enthusiasm coupled with all caps and the use of simple or childish (maybe even mocking) language like "oh boy".
It's all a bit unfair I think. I don't feel like "OH BOY GUNS" at all really. I'm just saying it wouldn't kill me if there were guns. My interest is in the outcry against guns. I don't think it's really warranted... atleast in cases like "go play WoW" and whatnot.
You're right though. When people think traditional hack and slash, they dont think guns.
Did we expect skill trees in Diablo 2? Or Runes? Or the Horodoric Cube? I guess those things shouldn't have been in the game.
You can have your guns, but they will be realistic.
You only get 1 shot every five minutes, that's your reload time. Rifling doesn't exist yet, so they are highly inaccurate and only 1 in 5 shots ever hits.
The only reason the firearm took the place of the bow and crossbow, was because it's easier and cheaper to train one hundred men to use a gun than it is to use a bow. This lead to armies fielding rifleman in large numbers with the hopes that they would hit something. Then people invented more creative ways to make guns kill easier and faster.
Not more than 200 years ago were we still only getting off three shots per minute, in the hands of a trained soldier.
I wouldn't want a firearm as a weapon... because it's realistic. Today guns are the weapon of choice. But I play Diablo to escape and embark in a world where demons die mercilessly by ways of sorcery and kickass ancient weaponry.
Prepare, I quoted a crapload of people. If you want, go get a soda or a sandwich now.
Ok, got your refreshments? Cool. *Deep breath.* Lets begin.

I don't get it. It's not like you're gonna end up with uzi's and ak47's. Would it really kill diablo to have a slight foray into pre-colonial firearms?
We already have bows and crossbows... so...
1. on the one hand, how much does it change
2. on the other hand, if it doesnt change much why put it in
Agreed, uzi's and AK's don't belong. Hand cannons that would fit in the time era would belong. In fact, it amazes me with the technology they had in D2 (in game people's technology) that there were no primitive firearms.

Blizzard(R) said that the Diablo universe is an ever changing universe, thus this statement is null and void.

The genre is hack and slash, not hack and shoot. Look at Too Human. They tried this, and before it's even released it's being knocked for its terrible gameplay mechanics and "trying to do too much at once" - i.e. guns.
I concur. And lets remove axes and clubs and all the one handed weapons for short swords and remove long swords and polearms and all the two handed weapons for heavy two handed axes. That way you only have short one handed swords and heavy two handed axes. Makes things alot easier. *Makes petition.*

Another example? Hellgate: London. Man, that was a great game that really kept Flagship Studios afloat, huh? Oh wait.
Look [thread link="One"]here[/thread link].

Besides, what kind of magic would guns be imbued with? Multi-shot? Faster firing rate? Shock, explode, freeze, or poison on contact? Hey those sound great, and you know why? Arrows already have those abilities. No need to crowd the game with another item that does the exact same thing.
Well, I would expect the same things as the bows.
Wait, bows are already there... Well, there's Crossbows and javalins... But let's just hide the crossbows and javelins, right?
*Makes petition to remove crossbows and javelins for "simplicity's sake".*

I think the original post was talking about hand cannons. Besides they would have the bonus of doing the same things as arrows/bolts AND pissing a lot of people off at once!
Pissing people off is pretty good. Hehehe....

Well apparently there are guns in WoW... and WoW is very successful. Perhaps it's the application of the thing, rather than just the fact that it's there or not.
Hey, you take Diablo out of Warcraft and I am SURE that Warcraft fans will take there warcraft out of your Diablo. (Granted, once all the Diablo is out of Warcraft, there probably won't be any warcraft in Diablo in the first place, considering WoW is basically Diablo MMO with Warcraft characters...)

I say, if guns can be worked into the game in a compelling way, why not? Because it wasn't in the first two? They have explosives and iron works. Are guns in the diablo world so far fetched?
Because people don't like change. They want Diablo 2, just with prettier graphics. That's all. That's all they want. They don't even want a story, they want Diablo 2 with current generation graphics.

Why have guns if bows do the same thing? Why have axes if swords can melee? Why have eagle orbs if staves can be a magic user's weapon? Only short swords for 1h melee'ers, heavy axes for 2h melee'ers, throwing knives for throwers, crossbows for ranged, and staves for magic users. All the other weapons should be trashed, right? Right? Let me put it this way, because you're both obviously being retarded.
A bow in the hands of a trained user is rather fast to reload and shoot again, depending on the size, draw length, and draw weight. In D2 the bow has a speed range from Very Fast to Slow, although in the hands of an Amazon or Rogue merc all bows shoot from Very Very Fast to Normal.
The crossbow takes some time to reload and doesn't require as much skill to use as it was the cousin to the flintlocke firearm. With the exception of a repeating crossbow, crossbows in D2 ranged from Normal to Very Slow, with Very Slow only being gotten by Assassins and Amazons. It was actually slower for the ranged class, the Amazon, to use crossbows.
This is an example of Blizzard giving a realistic approach to weapons. They actually consider if a certain class would have training with a weapon and base their speed in using it on that. They also give each weapon a realistic speed based on how the weapon performed in real life.
A flintlocke rifle of the time, if it were invented, would translate into D2 with a Very Very Very Very Slow attack speed.
That's four times slower than a Heavy Crossbow, which is slightly in favour to the gun by making it a little faster than it should be. In D2 that would translate into about two shots per minute.
Damn, here I thought that was Diablo with the Amazon shooting really really fast...
Guess the Increased Attack Speed small charms and jewels and whatnot wouldn't work on guns...
Edit: Miss read what you said. Apparently Bows CAN shoot really fast and guns can't, even though historically they would of shot at about the same speed. Guess IAS only works on bows, crossbows, axes, swords, clubs, polearms, *takes a breath* spears, javelins, staves, orbs, maces, scepters, etc, but not guns. Hmm...
Well, the thing is, it's not based heavily on guns. Guns would be just like bows?

That wasn't the point I was trying to make at all. Of course there is room for different weapons that do similar things.
I was saying when people think HacknSlash they don't think of guns. And as we all know a lot of people are greatly put off by things they don't expect. Especially in this matter. Some like the idea some completely hate it.

Every game I have played that had runes as attributed them with magic (even before LOD). It's not like LOD made this up.

The poem relates how Ríg, identified as Heimdall in the introduction, sired three sons (Thrall (slave), Churl (freeman) and Jarl (noble)) on human women. These sons became the ancestors of the three classes of men indicated by their names. When Jarl reached an age when he began to handle weapons and show other signs of nobility, Rig returned and, having claimed him as a son, taught him the runes. In 1555, the exiled Swedish archbishop Olaus Magnus recorded a tradition that a man named Kettil Runske[/URL'] had stolen three rune staffs from Odin and learned the runes and their magic.

i wouldnt mind if guns are introduced as primitive hand cannons that goes into the hands of enemies. lets think this way, a menacing berserker with a single handed choppy weapon(axe) and a handcannon that rushes u head on, firing his singleshot weaponry from 5meters away with 1/2 second of recoil-recovery penalty, then proceeds to smash you with the axe.
then think of the barb doing the same thing.
personally, i wouldnt want powerful iron bullets in the game that just blasts through armour, maybe just short ranged heavy-assed handcannon-esque shotguns with a minimum firing range. i think armour can probably deflect small pellets by that time.
i welcome guns into d3, as long as they look and work as primitive as possible(befitting of diablo 3). then again whether they are in or not, wouldnt affect my decision of getting the game but im always looking for something new though.
When I think "diablo" I dont think guns. I think Swords, maces, Hammers, Staves, Claws, Wands, Shields, Pikes, Javalins, Bows, Crossbows, Longbows. Magic.
When I think "Guns" I think CoD4, UT3, Crysis, The patriot, Halo 3, Company of Heroes, WoW, Hellgate london, Quake, The matrix, Rainbow six, Mel Gibson. Not "diablo".
