They could make something similar to a gun that channels or uses magic similar to the staves, except that it concentrates the essense and forces it out the only way it can move.
I could deal with maybe having cannons in select areas. The siege of a town, like D2's Harragoth, could incorporate cannons that you could manually fire to help clear areas of masses of demons, or blow open a new entrance in terrain. However, something like this could also be done with basic siege weapons as well. Just saying I wouldn't have a problem with the idea...as long as it was only limited to cannons in a VERY select amount of areas.
I think they could put guns in the game but make it an epic endgame weapon that can only be used at high levels, but have a draw back of not having any special abilities.
In my opinion the most they'll really do is make an easter egg gun that shoots fireworks and does no damage.
So I remembered a long time ago one of the gossip dialogues that Qual Khek dishes out.
"Larzuk is a talented blacksmith, but his head is full of some strange ideas. Just the other day he came to me with a plan to break the siege. He wanted to fill large pipes with exploding powders and steel balls, and then, well, *chuckles* well, like I said. Strange."
It might just but nonsense, but what do you all think about it?
They might write this out as nothing ...but they do mention that it's been 20 years, story wise, perhaps guns will make an entrance but be endgame. I don't quite see how it would fit into a ranged archetypes skill buffer though...
Discuss if you havent already.
I prefer not to be honest, but would not suprize me if it did happen, i don't see it fitting the diablo universe though.
20 years is enough to develop cannons, which I wouldn't be opposed to. There were catapults in the Siege of Harrogath, maybe Harrogath could fight back with cannons! *shrug*

While I agree that a firearm wouldn't fit into the Diablo franchise, I think some people are over-reacting. They aren't describing an assault rifle or shotgun, not even a musket. Basically they are describing putting a metal ball in a tube, loading some explosive material behind said ball and then igniting it. It isn't very difficult, and as someone said, firearms have been used in places as early as the 10nth century. Considering that the Diablo timeline appears to mirror ours, but their geography doesn't it could be assumed that rudimentary guns could arise in any part of the Diablo world. Also, I don't really see the need for a weapon that flings small metal balls with less than spectacular accuracy and only decent speed when you can call meteors from the heavens, turn into a bear, summon forth hordes of weapon weilding skeletons and shoot fireballs.

Don't try to be a great man, just be a man... and let history make its own judgment. -Zefram Cochrane, Star Trek
You guys have to remember that the world of Sanctuary (Diablo universe) was a creation as a habitat for demons and angels that were uninterested in the war.
The laws of physics are thus not the same as they are here, and as such things are not the same, sure buildings look the same and weapons look the same, but it was so it felt familiar with the whole gothic theme, now that the worldstone was destroyed, the fate of sanctuary is an unsure one, this is no synonymous with just the world, but it's technology. If you read the stories of the sin wars leading up to the destruction of the world stone, the people of sanctuary are aware of the looming threat, which leaves many factions carrying on an unending legacy of preparation for the re-entrance of the sin wars in sanctuary.
Tinkering with technology is not impossible. I may have gotten a few small facts wrong in that but i know i'm mostly correct. 20 years is enough time for Larzuk to test out his theory and pass it on to his children, the barbarians that protected the worldstone should know more than anything the importance in any advantage. Though that's just a logical point of view on how they would progress. I see the probability as 50/40/10 with cannons being that 40 and guns being 10
I would almost expect big old cannons being used by NPC's during the invasion that was pictured in the video trailer to kill hordes of demons... I might be able to see hand cannons, and maybe, just maybe, match-lock muskets. The match'lock muskets though, considering how they are fired, would have to be used solely by NPC's, so that only leaves the hand cannons. I could see a hand cannon similar to Age of Empires 2's Hand Cannonier being used...

Maybe, but it would have to take insane strength to handle and it would have to absolutely be an endgame item.

I call bull. A normal hand cannon would weigh anywhere from 30 to 60 pounds, enough for you or I to hold, let alone people who are fighting hordes of demons. In fact, I could see Barbarians dual-wielding handcannons...

That'd be kinda strange but it could work maybe.
