You guys are all forgetting why this system worked in the past. The reason this system worked with Diablo 2 is because in diablo 2 gold was almost useless except for using the gold to repair your equipment. I still remember back in the day when I was in the cow level I would only pick up the Full Plate armor after finishing the cow level so that I wouldn't have to empty my inventory if a rare item dropped. The full plate sold for like 16000 gold. So there was really no need to have a big inventory because gold was not that important and the good items didn't drop very often.
Too many of you are used to playing WoW and other mmorpgs where you get a full inventory from a leveling session and then sell all the useless stuff for gold, because in those mmo's gold is important. Then you would be left with like a couple blue items where you would put it in the bank or auction. (I've never played wow for more than 1 week, but I am playing age of conan.)
Now if in D3, gold is important then I can see how an Age of Conan like inventory system will be better. But if gold was like how it is in D2 then a tetris style inventory system would be more suited. In diablo 2, for us old school guys like me Soj's were the currency for other rare items such as Windforce and grandfather swords. Later on in D2 soj's weren't used as currency anymore instead people would trade other rare items for another rare item.
Hope this helps the debate with Tetris style inventory system vs Age of Conan/WoW inventory system.
I don't mind new inventory style but I hate the fact that items look small when placed in the inventory, you cannot see any detail which Diablo 2 items had.
The tetris format really doesnt bother me. I'll be happy either way, whether they make it weight based or size based like with tetris.
If tetris is the D3 design at the end, I'd like it to be auto manipulated if I wanted it to be. Moving just around to have the right room for a new item was boring, and was a problem when you were near bosses.
Auto tetris or single slots sounds good. Maybe somehow a combination of both if possible.

A lot of talk about whether blizzard is putting in BoE/BoP items, if they do you wont even be able to see what the item looks like on your character without it becoming bound to you, even with the baldurs or planescape method implemented.
Yes i agree with the 1 item per slot idea like in age of conan/wow but age of conan does do it much better with the zoom in when moused over to see the 3d design or even better mouse over to zoom in and see the rare item artwork. Artwork impresses us we like pretty things hope they don't get lazy on the artwork. Like the orcs would say "me smash brai... OO SHINY"

Yea thats another thing I hate.
