A sure sign of a bad game economy is when game items become the currency. D2 SoJ's and GW Ecto's come to mind here. It is possible to have a thriving economy without allowing everything to be bought with gold. For example, BoP & BoE systems are good as long as it isn't overdone. It prevents the market from being flooded and rewards the player who plays the content rather than farming or Ebaying gold. At the same time gold or platinum or diablo dollars (whatever) are still viable for many other things and some items.
I am just afraid that you will be able to buy every single item with gold. Or they make a auction house. Don't you feel better when you get an item with a trade. A item that not many people have. It's the fun of creating every character and getting the best gear you can get. Every time i stopped playing diablo 2 for a bit was when I got every best item there was to get and it took a while to get them as well but it is all worth it at the end. Anyone kid can go and kill 100 monsters and buy whatever they want.
Thats easy to control though. As long as the rare items are, in fact, rare, their value will remain the same. Everything is relative, sure, but just because gold becomes more valuable doesn't mean that everything else becomes less valuable.
The best way to increase the value of gold, is to increase demand, and decrease supply. Gold is added to supply when its dropped by an enemy, or given from selling to an NPC. It increase demand, you have to make something worth buying from NPC's. I would say services, such as respec or adding sockets to items. And by doing that, you also take money out of circulation, reducing supply.
To sum it up, by offering services from NPC's, you greatly increase the value of gold, while maintaining an equal value of items.
I know what some of you are saying but I am saying that it will take away from MFing(if they have MF in D3) it is amazing to get 800 mf and every boss you kill you can't wait to see the drops. Noone will want to MF or just go off and look for items if you can just kill a couple monsters and buy the item. The game is not a MMO...only up to 8 people in a game is what you have to remember.

I still think you are missing the main point. they wouldn't be able to buy items just by killing a couple of monsters. You would have to do equal or more work to obtain the amount of gold needed to trade for any item. And ultimately, the person that finds the items is the person that decides what they are worth trading for. If anything, if you were still doing you magic find runs, you would be one of the people in control of the economy.
I agree... gold should worth.
Don't start screaming it's like this, it's like that. Money should worth something... or why bother putting it in they game? And a game like Diablo with no money is lame.

I would very much like to see gold have more worth in D3, a currency actually worth trading. Although I do like the system that evolved in D2.
