Well, tell me a game where bartering is common practice but there is a unit of currency implemented by the game designers that is used to trade as well. In Diablo 2 there is currency in the form of runes, but this is more bartering than currency because its value was not set by the gamer designers and is not monitored. A game like WoW is a good example of a currency economy because almost all trades involve gold. Games that try to incorporate both will usually only end up with one.

Why can't a heterosexual guy tell a heterosexual guy that he thinks his booty is fly?

ive never played it. but i don't know, if it can work it can work. its just not common to have both, as usually the currency will have more value in the system because you can get ANYTHING will currency vs. having to search for someone to accept your barter.

thats true to a point, but if u make the currency "rarer" -as in it doesnt give alot, then there can be a balance. runes and some items might be one form of currency, while xxx amount of gold can buy u a currency item/rune. it sounds complicated but some mmos also work like this after an economy is steady.

the reason why gold in d2 was so worthless was because of how common it was and that npcs really didn't sell good items and had little to offer.
if d3 fixes that then economy might have a chance at equilibrium between bartering and gp
exactly. Gold was worthless because way more was being dropped than was ever spent. But I don't think you should be able to buy the best items at stores. That just seems to ruin the treasure hunt. Instead, have services that NPC's sell.
Both Currencies should be fine.
IF:
1° gold drop rarely
2° "GM" monitor and adjust gold drop dynamically.
3° well better stop couse its already too hard they do.

Treasure hunting is what made D2 so much fun imo. I would rather look for a item and trade with people and see what everyone has for a hour than be out killing monsters for an hour 2 get enough gold to buy a item.
Gold/gems/barter all three should be used.
In the video I didnt see gold just dropping left and right like D2 so maybe there is hope that trade will incorporate all of the above.

+1.
Thats why I think venders should offer services(such as socketing) for gold, not items. You have to keep those rare items, rare.
This way, Players can not Buy items for NPC's, but could buy them from other players(with gold).
An Example:
Sue has some armor that she needs socketed, but doesn't have the money to pay for it. However, she has some item that she can trade to John for the gold to socket the item.
I am just afraid that you will be able to buy every single item with gold. Or they make a auction house. Don't you feel better when you get an item with a trade. A item that not many people have. It's the fun of creating every character and getting the best gear you can get. Every time i stopped playing diablo 2 for a bit was when I got every best item there was to get and it took a while to get them as well but it is all worth it at the end. Anyone kid can go and kill 100 monsters and buy whatever they want.

Trading Rare Items is part of the fun in diablo II, but gold be worthless besides the constant tax of repairs and pots I find dysfunctional.
The best solution I've seen is : Having Respecs cost tons of gold, and Being able to socket items at the cost of gold....
Or, something of that sort. Make it so you can buy something worth while with your gold, and then suddenly, it's value increases.

Anyways.
I vote bartering.
Especially if you don't have a lot of Gold.

I love economics.
I just feel gold should have some value too.
