Assuming this game has been in development for 2+ years already, there couldn't be many former Blizzard North employees working on it seeing as how Hellgate: London was just released 6 months ago. So who from the original 2 games are on the dev team?

Why can't a heterosexual guy tell a heterosexual guy that he thinks his booty is fly?
Blizzard North regrouped and made NCSoft from what my sources tell me.
There are no people left of that team in Blizzard. It is not surprising to me to have the art akin to that of WoW. Samwise is on the panel and has done much of the art for Diablo 3.
I love all of Blizzard's creations that I have played (that even means WoW), but I feel like the stuff we saw was a little pristine. This isn't necesarily bad depending on how stable the world is at this part of the story, but if the entire game follows this trend, I think that it won't carry Diablo's gothic feeling.
This isn't meant to be a rant, it's just my feeling that D2 devs are the most qualified people in the business to work on D3.

Sam Didier played a much smaller role on the Diablo series than he has in the Warcraft series. And I think I'm justified in saying that his work in Warcraft has influenced the style. If not a lot, at least enough to get the nuances of that style.
Is it just me or are you giving Samwise too much credit for Diablo/Diablo 2?
I've been through all of Sons of the Storm. And I think it's already been talked about that they go through a committee, not a single artist. And yes, yes I do call that a smaller role. And considering he's been working on Warcraft art for the past 8 years, I'm very, very justified in claiming that with the way this game's art skirts the edges of Warcraft's style is due to that very fact.
I'd also like to invite you to look at Samwise's gallery. Then you can tell me how wrong I am when you compare where the majority of his time has been allocated. You can tell me I'm wrong, but I'll laugh at you. And that's okay. If you seriously still want to bleat that Warcraft style art hasn't influenced him, then I think it would be best not to respond to this comment. There's a petition talking about this very thing.
The only difference between what I'm talking about and what the petition is talking about is that I don't think it's a bad thing.
Are you still contradicting my base argument? His art style has been influenced by his time spent on Warcraft. And in doing so, much of the fanbase here at this forum finds that it has tainted D3's style.
That's all. No real argument needed. The gameplay trailer is all the proof I need. And it may not just be Samwise that it has influenced, but all artists that have been working on this D3 project.
that is ridiculous... how are you supposed to create a sequel to Diablo 2 without any of the devs from the Diablo franchise?
lol good question.

Actually, has nothing to do with Warcraft, but with the 2D to 3D change. They did the same mistake with Starcraft II and something I learned with Blizz is that they do ask to the fans and stall projects if they think are not going to deliver.
We are talking about a Pre-Alpha Demo. Even WoW Pre-Alpha art was different from todays.
And I agree with you on the grounds that it is subject to change. I'm perfectly fine with change.
But you'll find little support for your argument. It undoubtedly looks reminiscent of Warcraft art. It just is.
Whether or not it changes from now has nothing to do with my statement. The art is very similar to Warcraft. The D3 style has obviously been influenced by it.
I think Timester and I have summed it up pretty well....
Samwise, who was involved with the game's style, and Chris Metsen who is involved with game story, are both still around.
There you are.
I still haven't seen any credits listing Sam as anything high ranking in art design for either Diablo or Diablo 2. If he is truly the lead art designer for the francise, there is some hope, but even then, the people most familiar with actaully DRAWING the stuff are still not involved in the process. A lead art director is incharge of correcting the concept behind the art, not constructing the art itself so we are still missing a core aspect behind the art design.
I don't think you can deny that we would recieve a truer Diablo game if we had more of the original devs.

Depends. Did you like what you saw in the gameplay trailer? If so, don't worry about it.

You pull up a program and start coding the game.
its not rocket science
No... he wasn't.

This is incredibly weak.
If you've been wanting Diablo 3 so bad, why haven't you been coding it?

If it changes, cool. If not, that's just as cool.

He was not the director, but he drew some concepts.
