Good point. Simple - yet it totally destroyed his logic.
Your both completely right. If I was conducting secret rituals with the undead, deep within the bowels of a dungeon, I would make sure to plaster the place with pastel drapes and decorative lighting to ensure everyone knew what we were up to.

I don't understand why they might feel they have to do this with the enormous market they have in World of WarCraft already. You'd think they would want to not compromise that particularly lucrative audience by appealing to their tastes with a non-subscription-based game.
This is the new thing to grab those who arn't into subscription games. Or they might do like Hellgate did and offer a "premium" membership for a fee and free play to those who don't want the cool features.

Yeah, it's secret. You'd want to be able to see around in your secret dungeon, wouldn't you?
First, I must say that nearly everything I've read/seen about D3 seems really great, which is why I'm a bit disappointed with the current artstyle. One of the great things about Diablo is that it was one of if not THE first of its kind, the game was quite unique and spawned numerous clones. However, to change the artstyle so heavily and modify it into a more WoWish look really removes the sense of individuality that the game once had. While I understand that they want to modernize it to appeal to a broader audience one should not lose sight of it's roots and what initially made the franchise a huge success.

That was dungeon was originally a church. I imagine they just forced the inhabitants out and that was that. Lit the candle with their fire magic, and they had no reason to take down the pastel drapes.
I registered just to post in here - But figured I'd voice my opinion.
As everyone else is here, I was a huge fan of Diablo I/II, and not just for the gameplay but for the setting and story. When I played Diablo II for the first time the world felt real, dark, and convincing. I could get pulled into the game and the gothic settings and everything fit wonderfully (or horrifically, lol) within the Diablo universe.
The trailer for Diablo 3 got the mood and setting just right, it has dark overtones and visuals that make you believe Diablo is once again back into the world.
The first thing I thought of from the gameplay/screenshots were "wtf warcraft?", or something along those lines. Then I saw the crazy barbarian moves that consisted of jumping everywhere and pulling off crazy abilities. While it seems like a lot of fun, and it still looks amazing, it's not Diablo. At all.
The outside screenshots look like elf-land, with pretty rainbows and green grass. The inside cathedral screenshots look like the Undercity from WoW, and I can't even help but think of the giant fat zombie monsters (I guess thats what they are...) as the same creatures that guard the Undercity IN WoW. There's way too much green/blue inside, it doesn't give that horrific "something really, really bad is going on" feeling that Diablo I/II did. It gives a vibe that says "yay crazy spells" and doesn't really trap you into this horrific world of insanity that Diablo is supposed to bring.
I believe that Diablo 3 will be a great game regardless, but I would also ask that you seriously revisit the art of the game. Take out the rainbows, pretty trees, and soft sunlight from the outside, add more jagged shapes and darker colors. For the inside, I just can't get World of Warcraft dungeons out of my head, please don't re-hash the same style (just look at the tables and candles and such - it looks strait out of WoW...) but make more gray, add the light radius, take away the awful blue/green lighting.
Give that mood of Hell coming back into an already twisted world that the previous episodes gave, not corny monsters popping out of places that aren't realistic or scary at all. I'd hate to see great, dark and moody cutscenes like the trailer between acts and then have to return to a game that looks like the current released shots.
Really, like what laws of physics...? A rainbow is only visible when light is coming from behind your viewing position, the shadows are clearly NOT pointing away from you so therefore the rainbow should not only not be there because its Diablo, but also because its physically impossible for one to appear.
Not sure which to vote for here, its both too cartoony and too saturated, why do people split such similar choices? effectively the the 2 second choices add up to make a single choice. I suppose its at least good to see combined there are a lot more people that dont like the Diablo watercolor world.
-edit- and thats not to I don't agree with Blizzards attitude that stylization is a good thing, it is. I however think that the stylization could look a lot more gritty than it does. Oh and another thing thats annoying me, it might just be my poor memory but I don't remember huge overdone brightly colored magic effects in the originals, the lighting bolts flying off that weapon in the video looks like it would do more harm to the user than anything else! I am all for powerful weapons looking powerful, but common, at least have it do something cool when its hitting enemies and not just permanently spark and add unnecessary visual mess to a screen while your just moving around.

I would think they had time to change the drapes since they managed to completely refit the entire place since the first Diablo with more lights, statues, levels and took the time to carefully paint each stone with a nice pastel green/brown.
I've played Diablo II for a long time from classic to LOD patch 1.11 and I like the new art direction. I found the color palette of Diablo and Diablo II to be one of the weaker points of the game. In fact, I know a friend who never played the Diablo series because of the "grainy-looking graphics."
For those of you who would prefer a darker, more gothic feel, then I suggest you read Keith Lee's response to this issue:
I stress the word "variety." As this is still the Diablo universe, there is bound to be hellish and/or dark and gothic environments not shown in the gameplay video. Having variety makes for a more interesting and less monotonous gaming experience. If that's still not dark enough, just turn down the gamma, brightness and turn off the blur filter. I know I've found Diablo II still a tad bit hard to see even with the gamma turned all the way up. From what I've seen from the gameplay video, I'm glad this will not be an issue again.
And for those of you saying the graphics look "WoWish," the only thing that this game resembles World of Warcraft is the interface. It has a much higher poly count, much more destructible environment, and much more sophisticated lighting than World of Warcraft. If anything, it looks a lot like Starcraft 2 since it's probably using the same proprietary graphics engine.
That reminds me of another point. The entire Tristram dungeon doesn't even look like the same place, infact, it doesn't look like a old cathedral/church at all. It looks more like an place from Baldur's gate 2 or Champions of Norath.
The issue I have is not with the light gamma or even the color saturation for that part (so all you people saying just leave the game alone for us and you people can adjust your game/monitor settings, read before posting your ignorance). The issue is with the style and details. Many people have already mentioned the happy gargoyles and lack of original architecture. Here are the others I want to point out again for those who don't read every page of the thread. I've posted it before, but I'll post again.
It's still very early and difficult to tell how the full project will pan out. Hopefully most of the gripes I have are just simple polish that will be added to the game over the next year(s?). But so far my biggest concerns are with the atmosphere and details:
* * pentagrams: These iconic symbols of the dark lord (diablo) himself were a major part of the series' style. They were the highlight indicators in the pause menu, there were fiery or bloody pentagrams in many dungeons, and you even had the climactic battle with diablo on one huge stone pentagram over lava in the depths of hell. How much more evil than that can you get? But in the gameplay demo not one of these evil symbols were seen anywhere. In a game that has Diablo (Satan) as the title one would really expect to see some evil in there.
* *gory details: In Diablo II bodies were a common sight. There would be dead bodies on the ground, rogues impaled on huge spikes (and often lit on fire), and skeletons locked in swinging cages (Act V). These many varied images of death and torture had a huge impact on the macabre atmosphere of dread and intensity. Nothing of this sort can be seen in the gameplay demo. The areas are squeeky clean. The demons even took the time to light a nice friendly little campfire without any human bodies roasting over it.
Common arguments:
* *The world has recuperated in the last 20 years, not everything is death. .... Come on, really? You're fighting demons and undead for crying out loud! Has the world really recuperated that much when masses of Diablo's minions are every 20 feet you walk? Wherever you find monsters to fight there should be evidence of other much less lucky travellers who happened to stumble on them.
* *They only showed 2 areas, not everywhere you go is going to be dark..... See argument above, this one is just as much a ridiculous attempt at logic.
* *It's still early, this doesn't represent what the final product will look like. .... This is the strongest argument and the one I hope is the explanation for the lack of details. Hopefully the missing bodies/pentagrams/evil imagery is only a result of being an early build.
Well, that's my 2 cents. I can't wait to see if they actually listen to us fans and find a happy middle ground the majority of us can agree on. Right now the crowd seems very much split 50/50.
I am confused about where you are going with this, you did read it right? it says correctly that the rainbow should not be there?
Diablo in its clouds of mist should have twisting spooky fog, not rainbows =/ Horror movies and even low budget things like"Supernatural" have managed to get the style down right, it baffles me why blizzard can't.
I can kind of see they might be going for a broader audience, I mean about 50% of the population are female and they probably prefer in general watercolor, rainbows and bright colors. Certainly seems they got a lot more girls into wow than is normal for a game about monsters and fighting.
The argument that other areas might be darker than the few shown make no sense.
THAT IS THE TRISTRAM DUNGEON!. Should any other area be darker than that? It looked pretty damned dark in Diablo 1 but I guess someone when in there and did a make over of the place...
I love the current style. I still believe there is going to be a stark contrast between good/evil, dark and light. I say wait and see. Also we have seen very little of the game to assume its always going to look like this. I mean come on folks. I do not want the game to be drab, dark, and Gothic everywhere. Just where it needs to be.

I imagine hell would be darker than that. I doubt they are going to make Tristram dungeon the most horrific and dark part of the game, since, I'm pretty sure it's going to be near the beginning. That said, I would like for people to show some restraint with these comments until we see more dungeons and areas of the game later on.

Just my two cents.
‘I'M NOT LEAVING UNTIL WE ALL HAVE AIDS!’—The importance of calling them ‘mercenaries.’

Where's the indication that the rainbow would be common AT ALL throughout D3?
