I'm not so sure that people are taking notice of the fact that the witcher is a very hardware intensive game. Blizzard isn't aiming for a hardware intensive game.
Rest assured, if The Witcher would had been made by Blizzard, medium PCs would had played it smoothly at max detail. The CD Projekt team had no previous experiences dev a game, they took the engine of NW, gave it a hell of a atmosphere and worked a lot on the story and gameplay instead of optimizing it.

The Witcher (2007) uses the Aurora engine. This engine was used for NWN 1 back in 2002.
Diablo 3 is scheduled for about 2010.
And you're saying Blizzard can't compete with an engine from 2002??
You're underestimating Blizzard.

I think that many people in this thread are behaving incredibly disgraceful by being completely disrespectful towards all of the hard work that Blizzard has done in ensuring the continued support of the Diablo franchise and their devotion towards Diablo 3.
The Witcher (2007) uses the Aurora engine. This engine was used for NWN 1 back in 2002.
That really doesn't prove anything, since it would have been heavily modified and updated to run Witcher.
However, after having played Witcher a bit, I really did not like how it looked. I was never impressed with the graphics in that game. Sure they are more "realistic" but that doesn't mean they look better imo. I would definitely not be happy if Diablo3 looked like the Witcher.
The game was just announced, people and already we are picking on the 'artwork' on a game that probably won't be released for at least twelve months! What are we? Vultures on a dead carcass? Sheesh! We can suggest things, but to say 'this game needs a more gothic feel' is like -- 'How white is the milk at the store'. I'm sure Blizzard, in their infinite wisdom, will have artistic directors that can handle that. From what I saw, of an UNFINISHED PRODUCT, its coming along fine? Are we even considering the effect the artwork has on the animation?
wow the new Deckard Cain looks about a million times better than the old one, seriously. It's funny, because in those new sketches of Deckard Cain he looks more human than that 3D model from the Diablo2.

Way to spin history with your lies and fabrications.
Starcraft is built upon the Warcraft 2 engine, and it was whiteboxed (go look up the term if you don't understand it) using placeholder graphics in Warcraft 2. Not many fans spoke up because there weren't any message boards or Battle.net at the time for that to even happen. They were never intended to be in the final game.
Starcraft was without any fans because it was a brand new game and a brand new franchise and Command & Conquer was already the biggest thing at the time so there were no rabid fans for them to piss off.
Quit making stuff up.
E3 had begun which is where Starcraft was originally shown. The game was indeed based on the Warcraft II engine but when they showed the game looking like this....
fans spoke the hell up and said it was Warcraft in space rather then a new franchise.
Blizzard listened and while using the same engine(revamped), they re-did the syle completely. What did the game look like when they showed it again?
There ya have it, nothing like warcraft. The difference in visuals between Warcraft and Starcraft was now 100%.
Then after that, they gutted the whole damn game and revamped the engine for a second time to get visuals fully complete as well as allowing more things to happen within the game(which we know is a hell of a lot more then anything with the original Warcraft II engine).
I know damn well what i'm talking about dumbass. If Blizzard did not get the negative feedback on the games look, they would not have changed it, and from the way Starcraft has aged so well....i'd say it was a pretty good decision.
Just beacause there were hardly any forums to discuss stuff and Starcraft being a new franchise doesn't mean a damn thing. Blizzard was able to get their answer on the first form of the game publically. The fans loved the new look of the game and Blizzard worked their ass off to make the game what it is today. If the fans did not speak up asap, all hope could have been lost for Starcraft.
The same thing now applies to Diablo 3 as many(including myself) think the game is Warcraft in the world of Sanctuary. Just as Starcraft was orcs in space.
Blizzard will listen, just don't be afraid to speak up. Oh and by the way, the complete redone vision of Starcraft did not take that long...what most of us want to happen with Diablo 3 would most like take a few months of hard work to change.
This is my first post, though I have been trolling these forums for a good while now
Personally, I love the graphics and art style in Diablo III. It adds a radiance and immersive atmosphere to the game, which I truly believe will help pull we, the players, in and produce a wonderfully satisfying gameplay experience. I just can't believe how this issue has already become so polarizing among the fans of the Diablo series. I have been a huge Diablo player since the days of Diablo I and saw the changes Blizzard decided to make when they came out with Diablo II. And you know what? The decisions they made, some of which may have been a little "questionable" at first, turned out to produce a much better game. Like others have said, this is Blizzard we are talking about. I think it's sad that some people are acting like this EA or something, who just wants to churn out game after game so they can appease the masses and cash their fat check. Blizzard has a stellar record when it comes to game design, so why not trust them now?

i agree with you,man.
its not about YEARS...just few months...we wait 8 years,we can wait few month more
Vimp, I thought actually that the people who don't like the gfx are acting immature. So even in that the 2 sides disagree
I now might act immature but it's what I really think. It's INSANE to even start a petition in this matter. It is a huge disrespect to Blizzard. You guys are mentally ill or below the age of 10. Diablo isnt about fucking graphics, you aren't a fan if you think like that.
A bit exaggerated ofcourse...
And I don't like the Witcher screenshots AT ALL. They totally suck compared to the current D3 gfx.
12k worth of sigs and growing very quickly, its not about graphics in this debate by the way, its about art direction in terms of visual appearance in keeping true to the feeling of the universe that is diablo.
It doesn't have to have higher graphics (ala half-life vs crysis), it needs to have a distinction of continuity between the games in the universe, most the people on the adjust an rectify the art direction band wagon don't want a overhaul of the game we want certain things changed to bring it back in line with the universe.
Things that they can change with minimal effort in the texture department, the things we've asked for ain't hard to do, heck even I could do them and give them back to blizzard to use in the game.
We don't mind the stylized art approach, we just want it more in line with universe in terms of visual appearance (Color Scheme, Gothic Architecture, Decay of Tombs) that actually made diablo feel like it could exist, its not about realism, its about giving the sense that it was could be.
I don't think people are understanding just what is being said, it isn't about revamping the graphics engine and upping the graphics to hardcore 2.0, its about adjusting it to fit better with previous games in the series.
You look at the difference between the concept art and the game, its a lost in translation, in the concept art they've completely been faithful and true to the feel of the universe, however in it's execution they've stumbled.
Its not about the graphics, its about the art, go play metriod prime 3, its not the most visually stunning game in terms of graphics however what makes it a charmer is the art direction of the game, thats what makes it a truly beautiful game.
We want them to keep the feel of the universe, bring what they've shown us in the concept art to the game, make the world feel alive, right now it feels different to many people.
I mean you can say its all about the game-play in the end and you'd be right, we do really care about that more then anything at the end of the day, the problem here however lies in the fact that while we are playing the game we want the game to feel more natural to what we've become accustomed to from playing the diablo series for countless hours, what we've seen plays like diablo but it doesn't feel like diablo.
We all love the game-play without a doubt and character design, those can stay the way they are and we won't complain, except maybe about the female variation of the barbarian, she is one fugly bitch!
They just need to adjust the game to suit of how they've described the universe over the coarse of the series and naturally tonne down the "wow" overkill of the armor, we want cool looking armor and weapons but we want them to be within kickass and not carebear category (concept vs execution again, check the barbs concept art armor! thats kickass).
Here is my take on it. I increased the shadows a bit, toned down the greens, and replaced the silly statues with something more appropriate. I warn you though, i'm not the best photoshopper around
well having a more gothic/horror look most def adds to the "creepy feeling" that ur talking about. what people are concerned about, is that the world of sanctuary is a super dangerous and demonic places. it doesnt make sense to have colorful lights and rainbow color environments in a world like that and i know it's been "20 years" since anything happened in the story. and seeing that almost everybody here hates wow, well the game looks signifcantly alot like wow, and people dont want that.
Here is my take on it. I increased the shadows a bit, toned down the greens, and replaced the silly statues with something more appropriate. I warn you though, i'm not the best photoshopper around
Assuming they are making this game 4 years. What did they come up with?
Average looking game engine (just play Titan Quest that come out in 2006 which has BETTER graphics) and art style taken straight out of warcraft series, same gameplay with few tweaks, and a new story.
So they took best out of Diablo 2 (gameplay+story), put a pile of warcraft (innovative art design + awesome features like single slot items) in it, and called it Diablo 3.
I'd rather wait few more years for a proper Diablo game, than see this gameplay trailer and screenshots. I thought Blizzard was all about quality of their franchise, but current Diablo 3 build looks like it's done in 6 months, art from wow, badly written engine, and nothing interesting from gameplay view.
If thats what it is, then I as a fan of Diablo games can say, screw them.
Really? I mean did you watch the gameplay trailer? It definitely played like Diablo, and in my opinion look amazing. It looks light years beyond D2 and I thought the boss and mini-boss encounters were really well done. I don't know why everyone's just going bat-shit crazy about the graphics and artistic direction. I don't see a problem with it in the least. It's obviously not going to be WoW or SC2, its going to be Diablo3 and that was evident from the game play trailer so what is the point?

Agreed.
