It's highly doubtful that Blizzard didn't already plan to change the graphics for the Starcraft 2 to what you see it as right now. In contrast, D3 looks fine.
If SC2 players didnt criticize that look from the 1st picture we wouldnt have that 2nd picture, it's this kind of change we want, more contrast, less colors, more definition, sharper textures, less clean textures, a more mature look.

You guys toss up screens of dark places in diablo II like there are no yesterday, but you all obviously seem to forget the not-so-dark places of Diablo II also. Since it's become sport to criticise the art direction of a "colorful" diablo III, saying Diablo II was never this bright and vibrant with color, I have only one question:

Take a look at some meshes which obviously look closely to what we have already seen in D2 (such as the griffin picture).

All those fans need to stop complaining. I am too a huge Diablo fan and I respect Blizzard and there way of making Diablo III. They had worked hard to make Diablo III, and people are just complaining about how colorful it looks.

I come from another gaming site where i am, strangely, the only one who is highly vocal and against the new visual style.Everyone else on the board simply keeps repeating it looks just like d2 but in 3d??I feel like we are looking at different pictures.Its insane, would be sweet to even up the odds there, sick and tired of it being me vs the board on the matter heh.
No matter how many comparison pics i show or how i try to explain the dfference between real horror which d2 and d1 had and 'haunted house' horror that d3 uses, the point doesnt sink in.Im really disheartened by blizzards take on the franchise, its a crying shame.

ill leave with this great comparison shot i found earlier, which i used to argue how diablo 3 is clearly using character models based on the warcraft style of 'short, stumpy characters with overly cumbersome wooden/spiked/fantasy armour' rather then the realistically proportioned, slender models used in d1 and d2.

You've got to be kidding me. I played WoW for around 3 months and that picture with the Barb looks almost exactly like WoW. I actually just now realized that the actual ENVIRONMENT the Barb is in is the one from DIII too, I thought originally the Barb was photoshopped into a WoW setting.

Er, no? It's obviously no point discussing here, you have all made up your mind based on prejustice and do whatever it takes to get your point across.
The only point I can come with is I hope Blizzard meets us halfway and have a post-process setting in the video menu, one for the current style of Diablo III, and one for a more desaturated look you want (looking at the images you (meaning "the side" your on) made)..
This should be "fairly simple" to do.. I say it with "" because you'd still have to program it obviously, but it would be far easier than to recode and redo all the lighting and stuff in the game, and if you redo things then obviously those who actually enjoy the Diablo III artstyle will be pissed.
But as for the textures and models (which you obviously are blinded by in some way), if you want that redone you obviously don't want Diablo III in the next 5-7 years.. And I still don't see why you are pissed of something that looks completely different from WoW except ONE freakin shown armorpiece on the barbarian that is inspired by a WoW armorpiece, which obviously is inspired by a typical fantasy armorpiece. I'd love to see you guys come up with a concept armor piece for him that isn't influenced by something in one way or another (especially considering the concept artist WORKS at Blizzard on THEIR IP's and thus work on checking out armor piece references all the time for drawing...).

Look at D2 caves, dungeons, whatever. You've seen one cave, you've seen them all. Same for dungeons and any other setting. There is one template for each.
It's hard not to imagine the D3 dungeon being not reused. And any other setting drastically differentiating from it.

No but I played W3 and the same argument can be made.
i voted it looks to cartoony. but id also like to see more grays/darks in the dungeon areas.
the characters look really dumb wearing those really big armours and ridiculously large weapons. i want the armours and weapons to actually look like what they are meant to.
One of the big attractions for me in diablo 2 was how sexy the female characters looked in their armours. (id often use worser armours just because they looked better). with what ive seen of the current diablo III graphics i just dont get that.
Also the atmosphere seems to be lacking, and i think it is also because o the cartoonish looking characters/monsters. the first time i went into the catacombs in diablo2 i actually felt scared...there was tables with women on them that were ripped in half at the torso....monsters would just come out of the darkness and attack you...
with this sort of art style im just not gonna get that vibe. ill be a sad sad panda if blizzard dont change the D3 style
