I didn't see either of these in the D3 trailer other than on the mini-map.
In DII you couldn't see mobs around corners until your character was in line of sight. It created great surprise ambush "oh crap" moments where you'd get jumped walking into a room. It also added to the suspense of the game, not knowing what was around each corner until you rounded it.
Light radius had a twofold effect. It visually helped to center action on the player and also was another very helpful statistic to add to armor. Allowing you more visiblity. It seems in the new DIII everything is already visible. Gone is the "sneaking through the dungeon in the dark with torch in hand" feeling.
The light radius can also add a nice amount of eye candy to the game. Titan Quest is a great example. With live cast shadows being sent out from your character's light source as you make your way through dark dungeons.
Hope these things can make in back into the game. Other than that. It looks awesome.
In the first 10 seconds of the game you see monsters crawling up walls from the darkness below to get to the barb. I personally think this is an awesome upgrade to the "can't see the monsters around me" effect. I mean, seriously... using the environment to hide monsters is way better than using a darkened screen.
Diablo 3 does not need a light radius. Why? Because this is no longer a 2D game, restricted to flat planes. We can have enemies drop from the ceiling, break through the walls, and strike without notice. Has it ever crossed any of your minds that with a new 3D engine and real-time lighting they can convey horror and the unknown without the light radius?
What happens if your killing baddies and all of the candles or what have you blow out and all thats left is the fain red glow of eye's peering from a hole in the wall, and the dim moon light through the cracks in the ceiling. The wall bursts open without a seconds notice and you are being torn apart by a hideous beast of hell.
Please people try to use your imagination. This is a whole new ball-game, and I believe blizzard can pull it off.

Well heck. at least put it in for eye candy's sake then (a la titan quest).
You could still "Use your imagination" and have it go out too (along with the candles) for your scripted event. As long as we are "using imagination" here.

That sounds awesome but I don't think Blizzard is going to make it that realistic.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
As the shadow once again crawls across our world...
...the stench of terror drifts on a bitter wind,
The people pray for strength and guidance ..
they should pray for the mercy of a swift death
for I have seen what the darkness hides.

As for the fog of war, it might not be as useful as before since enemies can spawn and ambush you anywhere as seen in the trailer.
I can still see everything just fine. But it feels like the character is the source of the light.
