Okay, here's my second try at making a good suggestion.
So why bringing the Necro back?
Well, he is lorewise the most important class and if you read the Diablo novels you'll know that most of them have at least one Necro if not more.
They are the keeper of Balance and thus the keeper of the world. They travel around Sanctuary hunting demons and corrupted mages who could disrupt the balance, they can be describe somewhat as Demon Hunters (nothing to do with Warcraft btw).
Imo, they are the Dark Templars of Diablo, or if you prefer the Dark Templars are the Necros of Starcraft.
Why an assassin?
Blizzard seemed to have wanted the dagger to be their main weapon, but in Diablo 2 the wand turned out to be used a lot more often (note that the Witch Doctor now seems to have it)
Following this idea I thought that maybe the Necro could use that dagger for assassination purpose and become an Assassin/Summoner hybrid.
Here's what the tree skills would look like
1) Assassination and poison spells
The skills in this tree allows the Necro to imbue his dagger with powerful magic or to use strong melee attack to finish off his ennemies.
2) Bone and magic spells
A combination of Curses and Bone spells such as Teeth, Bone spear, Corpse Explosion, etc.
The spells wouldn't only do damage but could also stun enemies allowing you to wreak more havoc amongst their ranks.
Note that with the new Necro, curses like Dim Vision would become a lot more useful since it would make it easier for you to dispatch enemies with assasination skills without getting hit.
3) Summoning spells
All the summoning spells goes in here, I'd expect the Necro to have a lot more summons than the Witch Doctor
The summons could also help you in distracting enemies while you dispatch them.
Necro Vs Witch Doctor
Many people are saying that the Witch Doctor took the place of the Necro, but from what we've seen so far he doesn't seem to use that much summons. 2 or 3 mongrels is no match for the average Necro Summoner army.
The few curse like spells we saw him cast, actually looked more like a warcry than an actual curse.
The zombie walls don't really overlapped with the Necro since the latter never really used zombies anyway.
Any thoughts or additional ideas about this would be welcomed.
I love the necro, but i wouldn't want him to come back as a hybrid, i want him to be just the same. A lot of people want the necro back so maybe blizzard will make him return.
I don't think we can really say that the Witch Doctor "replaces" the Necromancer because I don't believe we've seen all of the WD's skills. So, its too early to assume that the Witch Doctor replaces the Necro. Just my opinion :x.
There can't be CE, there's no corpses... Anyway, Since a lot of the Necro has been but into the WD, (purposley or not) I think that he should come back with some sort of melee side... Scythes should be useful IMO too, they just look so badass...
Get real, folks, the diablo you all knew is dead, a few years ago i said right here in this forum that D3 had a pretty good chance of being blizzard first bust (i was flamed to death ofc), and what you know, its not even beta and its already looking that way.
What if instead of bringing the Necromancer back, they would derive another class from the priest of Rathma, which would actually be an Assassin/Caster or if you prefer the replacement for the Assassin.
I can already see his name, the Grim Reaper or something like that
Plus it would feel so Diabloesque.

QTF, Necro + Scythe = win just sad that there wasn't any use for this in D2

agree.
Necro was great the way he was. Non-melee, spells, pets, etc.

The only way I could see the necro back at this point is as a paladin/death knight hybrid.
Most likely he will be an NPC that we interact with. Perhaps Blizzard left him out of the playable characters because he was extremely important to the story.
Necromancer is an important class, its the class in the Diablo world that mirrors the lore of the druid in wow - the necromancers may come back and if they do.. its time to see alot of summons and some poison n'bones flying!

I think your missing the coolest of any skill in the game : corpse explosion. Honestly, my absolute favorite spell in any game, ever.
Err no, corpse explosion would be in the bone and magic tree.
The concept art on the d3 website for the wd is killer, but the animated one in the gameplay trailer reminds me of a nintendo character.
My bad. Maybe I just felt like it needs its own tree.
Don't remind me.
We already have a fighter and a summoner, ranged class and mage class are guaranted in, so the final class will probably be a support.
BTW, assassin is dex based it makes no sense to merge it with a necro(int), if there is an assassin class it will probably be within the ranged one.
I can already see his name, the Grim Reaper or something like that
