This is second coming of the infamous polls about Design Decisions. This time featuring what should be the maximum number of players in a party?
It was said by the lead designer Jay Wilson that the maximum number of player character in a party decision is not being based upon technical limitations, but on the gameplay.
So I came to ask you, fand from the Diablo series, what do you want? What maximum numbers of players do you think it would be fun for you, for other? How do you think the different possibilities might affect the Diablo 3 success/popularity with the hardcore fans and the new consumers? What will be better for the game in the long term?
Less than four seems like a good choice to me. It would be a much more personalized experience (one isn't even compelled to say "hi" when seven other player-icons appear at the top of the screen), and having more than five characters in a party would be a terrible sin, since you'd have more than one instance of one particular class.
i put 8... with 5 original classes and if it goes anywhere down the road lod went with another 2 classes, this supports all classes plus one duplicate (best would be a pally with a different aura)... provides the least possible number for the most diversity and ass kicking power.
More than 6 players always got way too chaotic for me in games, the majority being leechers or item-nabbers who do close to none of the work. If the NPC's have good enough personalities and the whole NPC-help thing works out decently, I see no need for more than 6 players in a game. All it would do is create more lag. And we already all know it's not an MMO, so why push for more players? It just increases your odds of getting a PKer (the kind that just come in and kill people for no reason), people who come for just the items, and general jerks. Given, you won't always have all of your nice players in one game, but having less openings will decrease the odds, I feel.
Well, since each has gender options, and with the tons of gear that mostly (or maybe, all) will look different, you character should never have a clone.

Give us your thoughts on this subject.
It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
if the game is like D2+LOD in length, should probably keep it at 8
if the game is longer/more content (most likely the case) then it should be around 8-12 or possibly even more depending on how large it is
then again, i realized that there are only 5 classes .. i wonder how diverse they'll be?
Making Controversial points one post at a time!
I just wish there are more classes for diversity.
