I've seen the comments in the sticky post so I assume I am not the only one who wishes this system is back. I actually liked the idea despite the fact that mercs were - useless.
You had no control what so ever over the merc other than equiping him/her with some items, not to mention their "exceptional" AI and was of no use in any PVP situation... well, not like any PVP will last more than 10 sec anyways...
They should really let you customize the merc's skills as you would customize your own heroes by giving them a set of unique skills depending on the class of the merc.
With that said, I think since there will only be 5(or 7?) classes available immediately upon release, with more than a dozen interesting ones to choose from, maybe blizz can make good use of any other scrapped class ideas that did not make it on the roster and transform them into a for hire merc instead.
Ranger - Ranged Weapon Mastery (fire a bow or javelins like a machine gun!), Traps (MK style!), Pets (lions, tigers, and bears oh my!) - physical damage based
Demonologist - Bone Spells (Necro style!), Avatar (shapeshift into a demon!), Furies (evil spirits that hang around you, giving party bonuses) - mix of physical damage and magic
LEAP ATTACK!!!!! PLAGUE OF TOADS!!!!!
SLOW TIME!!!!!
Ya the idea of a merc would be that they are entirely optional, just like back in D2.
Like Paladin88 is saying, personal preference. Adding this feature in will not upset people who dislike the idea (hey don't hire one if you don't like some AI following you around...), but it will please those who wishes to have one. Sooo my take is, why not?
Act 2 mercs were only useful if they can actually survive
merc are awsome, they added alot to my experience, but that, in conjunction with runewords
the most fun charcter i ever plaed is a melee dream sorceress and it would be nothing without my merc with infinity fort and vampire gaze
i just love the idea of sharing an aura with the party even thought you are a sorceress

Just some thoughts.

i'd rather play with a friend then with AI that likes to get itself killed
Personally, I view pets as summoning-like creatures.
Mercenaries are a better idea. Leave the henchmen be. Iron Wolves FTW!

In D2 the mercs seemed imo to replace the classes from D1
you had one ranged, two warriors and another mage
So I think that in D3 they could replace the classes that won't make the cut.
Also they should make them more customized.
