I remember reading someone posted that the monastery got destroyed when the wanderer left and now all thats left is the Cathedral. Can someone exsplain to me what happened? A guy said the cathedral isnt even a decade old-so what? After the wander left 10 years later they built a cathedral there over the monastery? I say this because me and my friend were talking about how clean or dirty the dungeon looked in the video and depending on the age of the cathedral... or monatery.. it could exsplain its not so gritty appearence then again there were a lot of dirty monsters there. Basically its just a lore question cause im curious. Also if anyone knows the awnser is there more back story to it in one of the diablo books?
Ohooo. Cause the one person said they built the cathedral over the old monastery and that the cathedral was only a decade old-i got real confused. Thanks.
Somewhere on the Diablo 3 site it says that Tristram was rebuilt and that adventurers continued to loot the remains of the dungeon beneath the Cathedral until all treasure of value to them was gone. Maybe they rebuilt the actual Cathedral part of the town as well.
About three centuries ago, the Horadrim built a great monastery where Tristram is today. It was deep within that monastery they placed Diablo's Soulstone, ostensibly out of anyone's hands. A few decades ago, the Zakarum zealot Leoric declared himself king of Khanduras and had a cathedral built atop the Horadric monastery. This is what lead to Diablo's awakening to corrupt King Leoric, Arhcbishop Lazarus, and young Prince Albrecht. In the first game, Prince Albrecht became the embodiment of Diablo, who was then killed by a warrior who became the Dark Wandered, and hence the new Diablo, in the second game.
In the second game, we find Deckard Cain as the only survivor in Tristram, which has been sacked by demonic forces. According to the plot of Diablo III, New Tristram was founded over the ruins of old Tristram several years ago, mainly for access to the treasures that remained in the catacombs. So there's a decrepit, centuries-old Horadric monastery resting under a decades-old cathedral in Tristram, which was demolished and rebuilt as New Tristram several years ago.
Note that the catacombs under the cathedral contain all the Horadrims who died trying to slay the Prime Evils. When you think about it, it's scary. Either the Prime Evil used to kick ass, or the Horadrims were noobs.
I was under the impression that "New Tristram" was built outside of "Old Tristram". In one of the dev panels I remember them saying that we would see old locations come back, such as "Old Tristram". This leads me to think they are two seperate areas.

Why can't a heterosexual guy tell a heterosexual guy that he thinks his booty is fly?
New Tristram has been in existence for several years, though the exact date of its founding is unclear.

I will have to take his word for it, for I must admit that while I did explore the burnt remains of the "old" Tristram, I lacked the intestinal fortitude to do much more than take a few hesitating steps within that infamous cathedral of legend.
now this doesn't tell for sure that they are two separate areas, but it does mean that the cathedral is part of what is known as 'old Tristram' and the inn and the area where all the merchants settled is 'New Tristram'
I think that it will be sort of how the rogue encampment was to the rest of Act 1. So New Tristram will be the safe spot, and old Tristram will be the stomping grounds.

Hope that helps.
