I think they could revert the character's inventory back to D2 like, but make the stash 1 slot inventory. That way, you could store more stuff in the stash, and the stash would actually be a lot more helpful when it comes to keeping your items, but the character's inventory would not be so user friendly.
I think there could be a far more intelligent intuitive way of eliminating the need for mules.
Although I am not capable of designing such a wonder, I assure you it is theoretically possible!
They also mentioned they have a system that eliminates the need of mules.
I just can't really understand why this is such a big deal?
In D2 you had items that looked cool in your inventory but lacked any detail when you actually viewed them on your character.
In D3 from what we've seen so far, the items lack the same detail as the D2 items in the inventory screen, but is very detailed when equipped on the character.
Items on character detail > Items in inventory detail.
If blizzard really wanted they could just use a 3D capture of the item in the inventory screen, but I don't really get the point of having super detailed items in the inventory screen when they are going to be super detailed when equip them on your character. Am I crazy?
And to the person who said that it doesn't matter where the original idea came from, just that they are using it from WoW. Shutup, you are crazy and I can't follow your obviously flawed logic.
There are two ways someone is inspired by something that is the the originator of a thing or idea.
A man invents the wheel. Man #2 sees it and makes a wheel for himself, then takes it back to his homeland. Man #3 sees Man #2's wheel. Man #3 makes a wheel. Which wheel inspired Man #3's wheel? I would say Man #2's wheel. In this case you are inspired by whatever you are exposed to not necessarily the original. What you are exposed to certainly dictates what inspires you.
Current rubber tires weren't inspired by stone wheel, they were inspired by wooden wheels which were inspired by stone wheels. In this case you are inspired by the most technologically advanced piece of equipment, because going back and just trying to improve on stone wheels would yield more wooden wheels. In this case I'm assuming you are exposed to both, but decide to base your next invention on the most advanced thing.
This way you could sum up whole game. "mm what strategy? oh yea run around and click your mouse like a mad".
I cannot believe you are hc player and you don't see all that small possibilities tetris inventory allows. Did you never optimize your stuff before important battle? Never considered what equip arrangement give you more advantage, more safety or more offensive power, etc? Never wondered if you should buy 5all sc rather invest into better mara ? It's lots of small things and they are part of what makes the game replayable so much (perhaps not a big part but still). Perhaps after a few years of playing choices became too obvious (also for me) but you don't tell me you had never put thinking into optimizing your stuff to make progress.
i couldnt say it myself better (mainly becouse my english needs lots of improvment
I just can't really understand why this is such a big deal?

d2 was that way becouse it was made more than 9 years ago, techinical limitation. They wound never make all the animations for every single charater and every single diferent model of weapons they had. It was a whole lot easier to make items more detailed when they were static on the inventory
with diablo 3 otherwise, they had the opertunity to make everything look cool tahnks to 3d, but sadly thats not apearent Right Now, and thats not becouse of technical constraints
There are other reasons to use the tetris style inventory aside from it being familiar. Be careful how you use the word "just," as your statement reduces quite a few arguments down to "it's just what they're used to" - likewise not every argument is a complaint... or you could look at it as 'not every complaint is whiny'.
In any case, what you've said is an unfair slight against people who apparantly disagree with you. (See what I did there? Now it's like you just don't like the complaining because it disagrees with you. Subtle slights are fun eh?)
Anyway...
Anyone here ever play Titan Quest: Immortal Throne by any chance? Cause they did this nifty thing with their inventory...
Normally I'd agree with you if this were the only area for complaint; I guess I'm just flustered at how many things beyond this that people want unchanged. The inventory (tetris vs 1-slot), graphics (Diablo vs Warcraft), classes (Witch Doctor vs Necromancer), etc. etc. etc. It just blows me away at how people refuse to let the game evolve. This is why I tell people to just go back to Diablo 2 and stay there; they'll apparently be happier there. Meanwhile, I'll take a new game with new features and new experiences.
I think the new inventory system allows the artists to skip the process of making cool 2D art for all the weapons. I personally prefer the old style.. or a slotted system with much larger icons. Lazy artists.
I dont care what invintory they use as long as you can pick up items go to town and sell em

That's why i would stick to the tetris-style inventory, both suck in their own ways, but tetris is cooler and has better graphics...
actually, you're wrong. Typical quote backfire case.
to find all the rings, i'd have to organize them in a way where body armor/rings/weapons etc would be together. They're mostly arranged in sets i use (bags i carry with me) and old gear (that i'm mostly too emotionally attached - first raid boss loots etc). Of course consumables are also together.
If you care to organize them, its even better than any tetris like inventory could be (a bag full of consumables, bag of body armor, legs, shoulders etc etc).
I merely gave an example of how icons can look and how complicated it can get (mostly to show people its not "too simplified" and that it could require time to organize the stuff).
Actually, your quote is a typical backfire.
Remember the main "argument" (if you can call it that) for not using the tetris style system? Wait, what was it again, oh yea "its annoying to organize everything", obviously looking at that screenshot of you, the point is completely moot and i hope to dear god D3's inventory doesn't share any resemblence to that. What a mishmash of crap icons/pictograms instead of glorious artwork. I shiver at the idea of having an armor in my backpack wich has the size of a potion or a amulet or whatever.
For the very first time, I agree 100%.. I"m also drunk, but I assure you that I would agree with this even if I was sober..

could be considered that but only if you want to see it that way.
i could give you an example of the exact opposite by using another screenshot with about the same items.
example:
the amount of "trash" you can carry to sell to merchants. All of that crap gets in the bags, usually with a certain "system". All new items are put from left to right in the first bag (as we saw there are some more bag slots and a small bag dropped in the video). This is the thing that doesnt need organizing at all. Move to town, sell all the trash, done.
now what i ment with the screenshot was ment for those that wanted "tactic" in organizing (?) the inventory by sorting sets for different occasions. How many sets could you carry around in your inventory? 1? With the bags system you can both carry different sets of items and have them organized in bags (That was the point in the screenshot together with the chaos you can have if you do it half way as i did).
Also, with the amount of stuff you're able to carry around (i doubt its going to be as much as in my screenshot since its the bank slot and bags that filled it up, on me i only have 5 bags) the need of mules isnt that big of a need.
as for the "glorious artwork" you're talking about... i'd rather see glorious armor on my character than "glorious artwork" in the inventory with crap looks on the character.
+ I save a couple of seconds here and there not needed for rearranging
- tetris inventory can auto-rearrange, too
--- OK so both are viable in this situation.
+ I have more space(?)
- I lose space as i could replace an armor with 6 different rings in tetris
--- or I can now have 6 armors where it previously took 1 armor to fill six slots.
- I also lose space because i have to separate stuff as you said
- even less realistic than tetris already is
--- Yes because realism is being able to stick 2 full sets of armor and large sword in your backpack. Realism is for real life, gaming is for fun.
- I have to organize my stuff as before
--- Except now you don't have to worry about playing that "minigame" of trying to to make a hole to fit stuff.
- i cannot quickly recognize my stuff
--- Who says all icons are going to look the same? Of course some of them are going to be different. This is also no different than what is in Diablo 2!
Wow... those rings look exactly the same yet are completely different....
- no ability to have size-indicated power on items (e.g. charms)
--- Charms suck anyways, just give me better gear. I never wanted an inventory full of charms.
- i cannot tell big and small objects apart
--- So what? Do you really need to be shown that a broadsword is bigger than a ring? And who gives a crap what the size is?
- Icons look like shit
--- Its alpha... SUBJECT TO CHANGE.
Now I am trying to be rude or anything like that. I am just pointing out that both systems have their downfalls and their plus sides, and not every system is perfect. In the end it comes to personal preference. As for myself... even with the autosort button I still feel limited by a grid system. Overall I don't really care what they end up actually implementing, but I won't mind if they keep the 1 slot inventory.
And to some of your arguments Ollo, people have never had a issue with the inventory system in either WoW or almost any other game that uses the one slot inventory. They never had a problem finding their items or sorting through them. I expect blizzard will have some fairly good and unique looking icons for all of their items.
If it was an issue WoW would have done it a long time ago, but it's been proven to work well. Just as the tetris system works OK, the one slot is a good enough replacement, and like I said i really don't care either way on the matter.
+ I save a couple of seconds here and there not needed for rearranging
- tetris inventory can auto-rearrange, too
seen how a "rearrange button" works. Titan Quest i think had it, and Dungeon Siege. In both games i had to click it over and over to get it right but in the most cases i had to do it myself because how the system rearranged them i couldnt find a thing.
+ I have more space(?)
- I lose space as i could replace an armor with 6 different rings in tetris
--- or I can now have 6 armors where it previously took 1 armor to fill six slots.
- even less realistic than tetris already is
right, carrying full sets of armor, weapons and killing UNDEAD and DEMONS is about realism...
- I have to organize my stuff as before
if you only paid attention. putting the gear you want to use in the last bag and keeping the rest free for the "trash loots" to vendor you wont need to organize a thing. go to town, empty the bags that have loots you dont want, bingo! Go back in the dungeon to fight again!
Yet there's enough room for organizing freaks to sort everything in their different bag and all. Its easier and most user friendly for sure.
- i cannot quickly recognize my stuff
ever had mules?
Had a rings/amulets/jewels mule?
how easy was to recognize a SoJ or the unique runes just by the looks? Let me tell you, they werent recognizable at all. Because especially jewelry didnt have specific icons. Who tells there wont be different icons for the uniques. You do, but you have no clue whats going to be in the game and what not. In every game that used a single slot bag system there were different icons (you can see that in my screenshot too).
- no ability to have size-indicated power on items (e.g. charms)
as mentioned before, charms pretty much ruined the game in LoD and also the inventory room. Most of us after LoD had room for 1 polearm (or anything that would fit to that size. Great addition, eh? Better scrap the charms and bring on more weapons sets to change gear sooner.
- i cannot tell big and small objects apart
so you cant tell a ring is small? Its not the icon thats mostly important, its the stats (and the looks but in rings you dont see them anyway).
- Icons look like shit
lol, you saw 3 blue items with only 1 suffix on them and you expect their icons to look epic? Get real, which "Mace of the Bear" had great icons in Diablo or Diablo 2?
And to those who say that you don't need icons anymore as you have the high quality models ingame already: have you even looked at the ingame models?
have you? the armor worn by the barbarian was a full WHITE set of Gothic Armor. The axes and maces were magical with just 1 suffix. Does it tell you anything? Wear a quilted armor and it looks exceptional, eh?
My plead: why not use the high-poly models to generate the 2D-icons in tetris-size (it was always like this), and use the lower-poly models ingame. At the same time have a checkbox in the options, toggling auto-arrange.
did i understand correctly? you want lower poly models on the character in-game and higher in the inventory? Thats a ridiculous claim itself, as if you'll keep fighting with your inventory open to "admire" your precious armor. Its most important how it looks on your character, thats how you play and what you look at.
+ no hassle if you don't want to rearrange
--it is, because never an "auto arrange" button has worked as well as intended. You always will lose room with a system like that. when you use a potion for example "poof" one space free. combined with the other "free boxes" you could add something else. But you'd need to rearrange the entire inventory. No thanks.
+ items are quickly found even if you don't organize
I'd like to see you try to find a ring out of 40 different rings with the same icon. Its like another mini-game called "memory". Maybe we should implement this too along with the tetris edition of the inventory to try to find each item. Type in the name and then click where you thought it was. Fun, no?
+ beautiful graphics that resemble the real gear ingame perfectly
every item type has its own icon and looks. Most resemble the real ingame items fine. Only they have cooler effects (lightning-cold-fire? I loved how simple enchantments like these looked good on simple items - imagine how uniques will look).
And the winner is: tetris-style!
Not. Every "tetris" point had a downside that the 1 slot system could do better. Hows that a win?
*edit because there were more posts*
Maybe because WOW has much more items, with grid they wouldn't even fit on two screens.
Diablo has definitely more items. Just because people concentrate on a few it doesnt mean there arent more. Maybe in WoW there is more variety in sets needed to do certain encounters, but thats alone because of the MMO aspect of the game. Healers would need healing gear which in Diablo is not the case.
Do we really want a good enough replacement?
Or do we want improvement?
And if we want improvment, is the the 1-slot system the right way, or should we improve on what we had?
don't we?
And if we're talking about a system that works exceptionally well, why not use it? Its more practical, looks very decent (again, having played not only WoW, but many games that use the 1 slot system, i know the icons can look good without limiting the room we have for loots).
You'll give a crap when it takes you 10 seconds to find a damn huge thing in a bunch of messed-up, same-size icons that you'd have found instantly if the dimensions were more clear.
the icons explain very well what kind of item it is. All you have to do is mouse-over it to check its name and stats. If its icon isnt quite unique that is.
No, i was aiming for items of different types, look at my screenshot. With tetris-style, you'll be able to find all armors or all gems in 1 second, with 1-slot you have to go through a good part of the items to find them all, unless you already know where they are. It's connected to the "need for organization". But still different armors are much more distinguishable in tetris than in 1-slot.
everything is easily arrangeable in the 1 slot system aswell, but every person has his system. I prefered (in the screenshot i posted) to have the sets i used together so i could quickly use them (in WoW the case is that you need a variety of sets to proceed in raiding, resistances, stamina, dps etc). Its easy to have the items arranged as in rings, gems, armor, etc. I had on some bank characters (from the time i used to farm alot) and it wasnt that hard.
Love this idea.
They also mentioned they have a system that eliminates the need of mules.
