More so, and I have repeated this many times, I warned people 10 days before the countdown was over not to get too hyped believing what it was not ... I said it wasn't an official announcement of a diablo game.
If I say ... hey, don't sit on that bench, I painted it. Then I place a sign saying: "Don't sit, fresh paint" ... and even so you sit and get all mess up ... why complain?
If I say, don't read beyond. SPOILER ALERT. And you go and read ... why complain? Whose fault is it.
A number of people guessed exactly what it was going to be; and rightly deserved some hype as firstly it indicates Blizzard moving in the directio of Diablo 3 and not World of Sanctuary. Secondly it shows they are close enough to disrupt a possibly substantial fan community. And finally it was more than warranted to get the new website spread around.
I blame those who came on board to rave about the game being released on the 1st of May.
What?? If the loosing of the domain wasn't the "big news" then what the hell is so damn special about May 1st????
And you can't say WWI is the "Big News" because the countdown said half the web was going to link to Diablo3.com on May 1st, not June 28th/29th.
Please, explain to me what the hell you're talking about, because what you said makes absolutely no sense.
Oh and tell me what was special about May 1st if it wasn't the domain name change.
I need not further explain myself if to you I make no sense. Because to everyone who has posted in this thread, you make no sense yourself. You are mad at whatever happened on May 1?
Choose one:
a. Move on
b. Move on Life continues
c. Move on, don't cry for me Argentina.
d. Move on, because umm everyone moves on after finding out Santa doesn't exist.
It seems some people expected that they would be send a beta version of Diablo III on may 1st, to play at their leisure. Is it really so hard to grasp that this move Blizzard made is something big? Blizzard is always secretive about their upcoming games and they are smart enough to know that taking diablo3.com would be enough to send half the Diablo-related web into a speculating freny, yet they decided to make this move, which bodes very well indeed for the future of Diablo fans.
I'm not too sure there will be an announcement at the WWI; I've been dissapointed a bit too often in the past, so I won't get my hopes up too high, but, in general, this move of Blizzard is great news. It feels like it's the first thing in years that indicates that Blizzard still cares about Diablo and it's fans.

Lol?... Either A) your being secretive and don't want to tell why May 1st really was so special, you really are stupid and have no clue what your talking about, or C) you're just like the rest of us and your just guessing... I think I don't think your being secretive and I don't think your stupid so I think your just guessing...
(That's not an insult btw. Please don't take it as an insult.)
I'm still curious why May 1st was supposed to shake the web...
I'm still curious why May 1st was supposed to shake the web...
- May 1: Umaro chose this date to make public the domain name had been donated to Blizzard, after they showed interest in acquiring it.
- diablo3.com is the logical US/Worldwide default main portal for the game.
- Blizzard had not shown any remote interest in the domain name in the past 10 years. Roger has owned it since 1998.
- Blizzard acquired many other domain names in the past 8 months, but didn't seek diablo3.com until almost the last moment.
- The Blizzard Worldwide Invitationals end on June 29 -- which happens to be the date Diablo II and Lord of Destruction shipped on 2000 and 2001.
- Back at May 1, making the domain name announcement would ignite fan rumor mill that Blizzard is getting ready to make a game announcement soon -- whether it is at WWI or a not-yet-scheduled BlizzCon.
Bottomline, fans are hyped. Their hopes are renewed. Gaming News Networks reacted to what the domain acquisition means in the short or long range of time. It is coming ...
Many sites shook on May 1 ... but if you throw a rock into a pond, you will still see ripples going off outwards...
This may sound soft, but I feel honored to have received The News from this site, rather than from an external article linking here. Even though I have only been viewing this site for a year, and a member since February, I feel like it's my backyard. I can only imagine the excitement of the 5-10 year members.
Does anyone else feel this odd sense of pride to be located in the source of the ripples before the rock hit the pond?
as in "shake" it ment the big Diablo boom that happened and most of the major gaming sites in the world telling about it (which led to more people checking out diablo3.com and where it links for now). The change was a bit overhyped indeed, but who cares when its about Diablo 3?
Chrys, I love you. You are exactly right. I completely agree with you. I just wish that everyone else would open there eyes.
Nothing has been shaken. Half the internet did not link to us. There was no "Diablo Boom." And the countdown merely was to the date where we changed from Diablo3.com to diablofans.com.
there is a big difference to Blizzard acquiring diabloiii.com.es and Diablo3.com. The former made ripples and I expect the latter to make a splash. You can look at it as a single mediocre event or you can see it in the context of the recent and future activity.
As it seems to be I belong to a large number of fans that is just watching these forums instead of posting. It's not meant to be not part of this community, in fact I'm visiting these forums for several years already.
But maybe today I'd like to share my thoughts a bit and maybe I will make some enemies as well. My hope is that people besides me consider a forum as a place for such opportunities and respect critisicm even against admins or whole network owners.
So the reason I start posting here is not to express my personal interests, hopes, dreams etc for a possible diablo3 (though they're exist) but to show some people that there's probably more antipathy to Medievildragon's way of acting than it is expected. First of all I'd like to honor your whole work and enthusiasm for the gaming community. While I did a similar kind of job for a smaller fansite some time ago there's simply no choice but to appreciate your effort.
But I do not agree with your behaviour in the past weeks anyway. Maybe I'm wrong, but I heard that people donated so you can travel to Paris and give us information from there. Ah, you told us that it wasn't your idea? Sorry man, but I would do anything to not get financed by the fans in order to pay the own ticket. I actually would feel VERY embarrassed about such an outgoing.
I mean, what are we supposed to benefit from your attendance there? Yes, you would do a nice job and give us a detailed coverage of the WWI...... uhmm as well as thousands of websites (not only those who are diablo related) or even television... For us europeans it's actually no that problem to visit the WWI ourselves. Okay, you are offering us interviews with special Blizzard employees? In a secret backroom of course, just you and Mr. Morhaime, I guess. From all I've read about you I have to imagine your report like
"Yes, I talked to Mr. X and Mr. Y and even to Mr. Z!! But sorry no comment!" or "I really don't want to lose my relationships!"
(Don't get me wrong, no one wants to lose them...but I'm going to refer to that soon.)
Later on you became a forum admin here and so and the whole countdown thing was about getting to start. Of course it's always exciting to hear about such diablo3 news. But I can hardly deny to think of your intentions when putting this countdown box on your page (maybe this is addressed to Umaro here, too).
Oh you certainly gave us reasons for that countdown.
In fact you knew of that domain demand a long time ago. What did you think when you got to know? Just tell the community? Noooo, too easy. But I wonder... why? Why let them keep waiting for 14 days. Is it the visitor numbers? No... you doing your best to ignite hype... but for gods sake, why? Do you really think that countdown thing made us all happier? Wait! The news (Blizzard will own diablo3.com) made us happier. It is wonderful news. But that coundown wasn't necessary in my opinion. It just wasn't necessary. I actually believe that this should be Blizzard's job. They're responsible for theirs products' PR.
So to conlude the real disappointment isn't the news itself but the way you're dealing with. What you're making out of it. As you noticed, I call it "YOU give us the news".
What news is it acutally? That you'll lose your domain which most diablo3 websites will have to do sooner or alter as well?
The whole action sounds to me like a mixture of "It is nice to play with our community" and "It is nice to know more than our community".
The last part is my favourite. It especially reminds me on several of Medievildragon's quotes. You can really feel how he's enjoying his situation. I still believe that you know less than you admit...
None the less, honesty pays off. In some kind we're all in the same boat and this is a good thing. Take a look at the website of that spanish guy. He just told us his domain was claimed by Blizzard. Of course, you have "the best d3 community" (as you humbly admit) and 24k users here around but that isn't a cause to make a big deal out of that.
To come to an end, I hope you will think about my points and I hope you don't get too offended by this. By the way... where was the big shaking? :-)
chrys
If it weren't for the countdown we probably wouldn't have gotten our mention on G4, so I'm far from angry, disappointed, or depressed about the whole ordeal.

If that is they way you feel, then feel free not to donate. That's exacly why it is about donating, you don't like it, you don't donate.
And whether you feel ashamed or not is highly personal and depends on how people want to run their interests.

The whole issue relates to two things.
1. Blizzard's behaviour and their consideration for a fansite.
2. The exact nature of the domain name.
First of all, the whole point of the hype is only at heart because the domain name is diablo3.com. Had it been diablo3.co.uk, or diablo3.se, or diablothree.com or any other shit, it wouldn't have mattered, just as diablo3.es didn't matter. if Blizzard is going to put up a site for a future Diablo 3, it will be with that domain name. It began with www.worldofwarcraft.com, it continued with www.starcraft2.com, and it will continue witth www.diablo3.com
Second, Blizzard's behaviour during this deal, if mockery's report is to be trusted, shows an amount of respect for the workings of a fansite. mockery was notified plenty of time ahead that Blizzard wanted their domain. This indicated that Blizzard has an amount of respect for their fans and their long endeavour of watiing.
Since Blizzard doesn't appear to be stupid, at least to me, it also seems to be that they understand the implications of gaining the diablo3.com domain name. It doesn't take long to put together worldofwarcraft.com and starcraft2.com and realize that diablo3.com suggests an imminent D3 release. With that in mind, Blizzard waited with acquiring this domain name, knowing full well what the possible effects of them acquriing it there might be. However, they were still out in good time so that any troubles could be resolved before an announcement of said game. And the reason they waited was because of the fact that a fansite was here, that has been hyped for several years. if anything, I would expect those people to cause a ruckus at a domain name switch.
In light of this, the hype really isn't all that bad. Sure it wasn't needed, but it wasn't useless either. It's not PR for Blizzard either; if anything, it's PR for this site.

PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
Yea, and if it was on G4 that means it should apply to their slogan "everything you need to know", don't you think?
Kinda like Fox's "Fair and Balanced." IE Complete bullshit.

But the other half did
If half the internet linked to us then, considering the vastness of the internet, it should be no sweat to give me 50 sites that linked to us. Or, if that's a problem, how about half? Give me 25 sites that linked to Diablo3.com. It should not be a problem considering the sheer vastness of the internet. Should take you about 25 or 30 minutes, if that long.
