Some of those screens just looked like a rough photograph, but other than that, I liked some parts of them, like the ground, but D3 needs color, not just ugly plain boring gray textures. Also, remember, they're still making the game :P.
Does NOBODY remember how shitty Act 1 of D2 was? This is a vast improvement.
Edit: sorry for flaming
I would like if they sharpened the graphics a little and added more textures, like grittier and bloodier stone. Yes, cartoony = bad.
However, I disagree with making the game more gray. Gray = more boring imo, and more of a sore to my eyes. I like the color.
You can still have spookiness and gore with a color.
I loved the brief conversation with Cain. The nostalgia from "Stay a while, and" was great, and "Bah, nobody ever listens" was hilarious.
Also, I think the girl's voice actor (who also voice acted Sylvanas in Warcraft) is great.

Ranger - Ranged Weapon Mastery (fire a bow or javelins like a machine gun!), Traps (MK style!), Pets (lions, tigers, and bears oh my!) - physical damage based
Demonologist - Bone Spells (Necro style!), Avatar (shapeshift into a demon!), Furies (evil spirits that hang around you, giving party bonuses) - mix of physical damage and magic
LEAP ATTACK!!!!! PLAGUE OF TOADS!!!!!
SLOW TIME!!!!!
The graphics that were displayed to us were great imo and I thought at first that I'd be very happy with the way the game looked. But looking at the changes some of you have made (thanks), I'd much prefer the darker style over what currently exists.
edit: Holyblood's images finally loaded and I agree with his take on it, I love the idea of using more colors in the game but still keeping the dark and creepy look.
We not asking for more gray or more colors. Just a more detailed gritter look. People who can't seem to tell that the model textures are very low res and looks like a WoW texture artist did is a dumbass.
The barbarian looks retarded. I like the old barb with the ponytail in the back of his head.
The game needs to look dark and gothic just like Gears of War. Dawn of War 2 has some really nice dark and detailed textures.
Bottom texture reminds me of The Chaos Sanctuary, while the top reminds me of Warcraft. Top is current, bottom is the filtered one found on the german site.
The problem it seems is the lack of good shadowing.
I remember when I walked through Durance of Hatred the first time, barely seeing the walls and then stumbling into a pool filled with blood and at the center a mound of corpses and once bumping into a wall you see blood flowing down it.
The dungeon in the trailer looks OK, but it feels like it takes place on a series of roof-tops rather than in a dungeon.
Graphics do matter, not as much as game-play, however; getting the right arts style, music and graphics all together makes the game that much better. Yes graphics are a part of that equation when you are dealing with modern games, so guys, accept it and live with it.
And to the guys who worship Blizzard, please, /wrists. You are a customer and as such you have the right to suggest or even make demands. Blizzard is a company that makes exceptional games and as such our demands will be the same. If we never demand anything then well, that's just unhealthy consumerism where you are paying someone to tell you what to like and if you don't you STFU. Not cool.
Some of those screens just looked like a rough photograph, but other than that, I liked some parts of them, like the ground, but D3 needs color, not just ugly plain boring gray textures. Also, remember, they're still making the game.
What your tapping on here is the difference between Noir art versus a generic take-all style. Replace boring grays with "a selective palette". Using all colors so liberally distracts from mood, mood that was thick in the other two Diablo games. In film, black and white movies are considered Noir because they make full use of a limited palette, which has far more style than using all colors for immediate eye-candy.
I think that if the mood seems dark, then the colors don't really matter much to me. Though, I do prefer it to be more "horror" style graphics.
exactly what made diablo unique.
The horror genre; it's not easy to pull off but D1 and D2 did it exceptionally well.

I don't necessarily mind the outdoor environments as much as I do the indoor ones. I understand that maybe the land could have cleared up and regrown over the years, but when dungeons are crawling with demons it should present itself that way. More blood, less blue, more decay, torn fabric, etc. I also noticed in the gameplay videos that some of the blood and body parts gradually disappear. More clutter could generate more lag so if it is for the better of the game then it isn't much of a big deal to begin with. Now that there are destructable environments I could see myself getting a lot more fun out of the game and that is all I really want from Diablo 3, along with a great storyline.
I understand we have only witnessed very few environments so I don't really mind the direction of development ATM, so long as we get to see some more darker and grittier environments later on. I only hope that Blizzard will at least give us a handful of those, and judging by some of the concept art, there will be. I also understand that in the latest GS interview, Rob stated that he wanted to turn the dark, gothic mood into emotion. Playing Diablo 2, I never really got scared even though many of the environments were dark/bloody/etc. I hope that D3 can instill some fear and unsettling thoughts, and the appropriate environment would only add to that.
Many veterans of Diablo 1 & 2 will probobly agree that they would rather see D3 return to it's dark, gritty roots. It isn't that they're "retards"; graphics play a big part in games these days because they are slowly becoming more and more realistic. It helps generate a vital atmosphere and can set a mood. For the people complaining about the complainers: Would you rather see D3 as a MUD? Or text-based adventure?
"You are now entering a dark, damp dungeon. Which direction do you want to go?"
^ That isn't scary, nor is it very descriptive.
The same argument could be taken from Resident Evil. Long-time fans and veterans enjoyed it's true "survival horror" roots in dark, atmospheric environments. Ever since RE4, it has taken a more "survival horror action" direction and many fans were upset and left with no alternative. Silent Hill has been known for it's creepy atmosphere, but fans have been having doubts about SH5 ever since a team of Western developers took over the project.
You can't expect people to not complain or hand out suggestions, and you can't expect them to except change almost immediately. Especially fans of the genre/game that have been waiting almost a decade.
Aside from the scenery, I have also noticed a few people talking about the "Blizzard humor." I got a chuckle from the Caine conversation but then I realized that I would rather not laugh when I am trying to immerse myself into this dark environment. Surely I like to laugh but introducing this subtle humor into a game like D3 will spread it even further apart from the previous games, in my humble opinion. It's like your average Hollywood director taking your favorite video game and turning into a corny action flick with a storyline unrelated to the actual game (*cough* Resident Evil *cough* *ahem* Uwe Boll *clears throat*). It's depressing. But then again it was only one conversation. Hopefully there aren't too much like those, and we all know how much WoW loves to make obvious pop-culture references.
I absolutely cannot wait for D3 and I will buy it no matter what. I don't care if the Collector's Edition (if there is one) is $500, I will still buy it. I have faith that D3 will turn into the game we all will enjoy. Just give it time.
We're not talking about colorless, nor is Ultra's solution the final image that Blizzard should use. He doesn't have access to the engine. What we are talking about is using a SELECTIVE PALETTE for a more GOTHIC MOOD. Use Ultra's images as a general idea for what we're going for, not exactly what the game should look like.
We not asking for more gray or more colors. Just a more detailed gritter look. People who can't seem to tell that the model textures are very low res and looks like a WoW texture artist did is a dumbass.

Sometimes the graphics makes the gameplay.
"Two decades have passed." Shut your mouth.
It adds a better feel and over all more element to the whole game when brought in as a whole (lore, gameplay, etc).
Mind putting it up on the battle.net D3 forums? I think Blizz pays more attention over there.

This guy is right It's all about brightness, not about colors !
That other guy is right too, it's because we no longer have the light radius.
The models are fine, but the game overall need more shadow, thats my take on it.
