They kept the isometric system for Diablo 3, which is marvelous, because it's the best. Good thing they didn't turn it into WoW with a different storyline.
You also have to remember that this is more then like pre-alpha stage, so right now they are more concerned about game play then how it looks, just look at SC2 it went thru the same stages, cartoonie in the beginning and more realistic as it progressed.
in your first 2 pictures, i agree with the ground and wall color changes, but i think the lighting should stay the same. like the bright red on the lights above the arch will be the bright orange instead of the pale pinkish it turned to
Though i agree there are somethings that should be more realistic, and darker. But why does everything have to be compared to WoW, it WoW this and WoW that, it's diablo 3 damnit not WoW.
I love the second pictures, i feel the lighting should stay the same but it should be darker like in those pictures.
this is exactly why most modern day games all look and play the same.
the mentality of the user base is concerned more about how it looks than how it plays. out of ALL the threads ive seen on this board, all have been focused on how it doesnt look like "thier opinion" on how the game should look. dont you realise how stuck up and snobbish you sound? i for one am glad that a next gen game is ACTUALLY USING THE FULL COLOR PALLETTE rather than grungifying the whole damn game into some brown mustard tint becuase it has to slam the fact that its HARD AND BRUTAL AND SO EVIL becuase exploding zombies, locusts clouds, witch doctors, fat walking tumors that explode with ELECTRIC (im presuming demonic) EELS FLYING OUT OF THERE CHEST CAVITY, and least but not least DIABLO HIMSELF COMING FROM THE DEPTHS OF HELL isnt evil enough for you.
While I really like the overall look feel of the game even as is I do agree that it could be improved on with these suggestions, nothing huge but more detailed art and lighting changes would go a long way. I do NOT agree with some people who want to make it into this dark tiny game, that doesn't make use of colors or a variety of environments.
I would be perfectly happy if it shipped as is but I do think improvements are possible. I really liked the gamestop video and it seemed like they are getting it right with his comment about making the game dark by setting the mood not by turning down the brightness.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
( First post btw, but I'm a hardcore Diablo fan )
You make a good point Ultra. A really good point. Diablo2 had amazing graphics, both dark and realistic. I would go so far as to say some of the best graphics ever made for any game. First of all, since most of you wanted 3D, there is just no way you could make as realistic looking of graphics in 3D and have the game run remotely well. Diablo2 was also technically developed by a different studio, who thought independently from the central Blizzard art philosophy. Notice how similar Diablo, StarCraft, and WarCraft all are beginning to look. It's the new "Blizzard" style. Think of Blizzard more like Pixar now, they are a closed-off community, no longer two independent studios ( North and South ). Blizzard is more commercial, they are more generic, trying to be less offensive, and going with something "safe" that is proven to work for a broad audience which guarantess more sales. I'm as sad as you, but think of it as an inevitable change. First of all because the original studio is no longer intact. Secondly because Blizzard is becoming larger and more commercial. It's what happens to all games once the company expands and becomes more corporate. The grittiness disappears. Think of the original C&C (Westwood) as opposed now to the modern C&C (EA). I applaud your efforts, but I doubt they'll do anything to change the style.
To get into the specifics, the backgrounds, as always, look incredibly detailed and overall look really good. But yes, there is too much saturation, not enough darks. Overall, however, the backgrounds look really really good. My main problem is the characters, which you can't do much about and here's why: You can't shadow dynamic characters well in 3D, leaving the character fully lit. This is horrible for a Diablo game. A fully lit character ( enemy or hero ) isn't gothic, it's cartoony. Combine this with low poly counts on the characters, and you get a really cartoony style. Sure, you could change the hue/saturation/contrast to make the backgrounds look more gothic, but the characters are still going to look cartoony. I would guess that this style is also just the result of the limitations of 3D graphics.
The solution to the cartoony character problem would be: Dynamic Ambient Occlusion like in Crysis and higher poly models. This would add tons more lag, and this is against Blizzard's policy of making games that run really well.
ultramegazord you just proved my WHOLE ARGUMENT. who gives a fuck about how it looks? really now? why does it matter THAT much?
lets see, no one has commented on how incredibly polished and true to the classic diablo look the character models have, how fluid and lively all the animation is, and thanks to a seemingly robust physics engine for this type of game, the attacks actually convey a believable sense of power and viceralness that i have yet to see in a dungeon crawler. the fact that they are staying so true to the oldschool gameplay style but added in slight tweaks such as health orbs insteat of using health pots constantly makes alot more sense considering the fast paced nature of the game. also consider the fact of how long they have had to polish this gameplay formula and just think of how solid its going to be all threw the game.
this is exactly why most modern day games all look and play the same.

Dont get me wrong, i do think there is room for improvement, but You hit the nail on the target. Today's gamer is more intrested in good looking graphics, and though to a extint they should, i am all for realism, but were shuting out gameplay for graphics, and that is where many games go wrong.
Should we have good Graphics- Hell yes, should thank be a prority over gameplay- Fuck no
ultramegazord, your lack of ability to see the whole argument explains why graphics are such a big deal to you. lets see if i can break past your short sightedness and make it simple:
if you want the game to look like those screenshots, its really simple. hit the menu on your monitor, see color saturation? yeah, turn it down, lil more.....little more...riiiight there! there ya go, only red and some really bright shades of purple and blue will shine threw. ok now, see the contrast option? jack that up about as far as it lets you go.
viola! you have your preconcieved notion of how diablo 3 should look without wasting the developers time they could be using on bug stomping to REMOVE HALF THE COLORS FROM THE GAME.

BTW that statue looks gothic, throw a creepy yet fitting dungeon music over it and its scary
