First of all there are a LOT of things that point to a Diablo 3, of course its release at Blizzcon 2007 is not a sure thing we can speculate and see different clues that all can tie in to Diablo 3.
FIRST; there is an older interview (2006) with a fantasy writer, Richard A. Knaak on his writing of the Sin War trilogy...
The Sin War is a trilogy of novels written by Knaak, made up of the following:
Book One: Birthright (2006)
Book Two: Scales of the Serpent (2007)
Book Three: The Veiled Prophet (tba)
In his interview he alludes to the fact that there will be a Diablo 3 in the (near) future. His collab with Chris "Thundergod" Metzen [the Vice President of Creative Development at Blizzard, Metzen is responsible for most of the storylines and lore (through instruction manuals, etc.) found in the Warcraft and Starcraft series of games as well as concept art and character design] also alludes to the fact that a Diablo storyline is needed for a sequel...
here is the interview:
Medievaldragon Hi, Richard. Not long ago, you wrote Diablo: The Moon of the Spider with Zayl the Necromancer. Those who already read or will read Diablo: Moon of the Spider may wish to know if Diablo: The Sin War ties directly with the events of your previous book.
Knaak
Sin War takes place long before, but its events lead to all that is Diablo.
Medievaldragon: Why did Blizzard, and by saying so, Chris Metzen and/or you decide to release a trilogy based on the Sin War -- an event of the far past -- at this point? And why not start at the Great Conflict which is a previous event in the Diablo history?
Knaak:
This is the pivotal event for humans. It is how they become drawn into the conflict between the two sides. It is a human story, with human actions causing events. It is the basis for all that goes on after.
Medievaldragon: According to the book, the existence of Sanctuary was kept hidden from the High Heavens. However, the Worldstone is a physical link between Heaven and Sanctuary. This will trail off some fans point-blank. So, I am forced to ask ... Will the creation of the Worldstone appear in any of the three books of the Trilogy? Or is the Worldstone built far after The Sin War event?
Knaak:
The creation will not be shown, as that, according to Blizzard's material, took place at the beginning of Sanctuary, but we will see it. We would have to. We will find out more about it, especially in the second volume.
Medievaldragon: Hope I am not spoiling much at this point, however I really have to ask. Blizzard introduced a new Pandemonium Event monster named Lilith (Act V) in Diablo II Patch 1.11. You can read about her at the official Arreat Summit Website.
Is she the same Lilith mentioned in Birthright? What could you tell us about her through the development of the trilogy? It is interesting to see this character become the catalyst of the Sin War.
Knaak: She is, I believe, although she will look a little different by the game's point. Her part in the trilogy is major. Definitely an interesting character.
Medievaldragon: How much of the book is creation of yours, and how involved is Chris Metzen behind the canon storyline of Diablo: The Sin War Trilogy? Do you think the ramifications of this book impact in the storyline of Diablo 3 the game?
Knaak:
This is a pure collaboration between myself and Chris Metzen/Blizzard. All that is written is passed by him and the others there. This will be canon and has adjusted earlier info. The ramifications here will be used for any future project ... and I ain't writing for a dead game.
Medievaldragon: This is my last question to give fans an opportunity to ask you questions. However, something I know many will be pleased with. Will we see Rathma, Angel Tyrael or Angel Izual show up later through the Trilogy?
Knaak:
Yes, and more.
AdiTT (Phrozen Keep): I see one of the questions almost covers what I would like to ask - the storyline of the Sin War Trilogy. It is a well-known story on gaming world. Do you felt the need to add/change things to make the Diablo universe more complete?
Knaak:
We altered what needed to be altered for the sake of the game's growth. We didn't want to change anything for the sake of just changing it. We felt this story will better serve the fans.
AdiTT (Phrozen Keep): Were you inspired for new universe while working on the trilogy?
Knaak:
The trilogy has inspired ideas. what those become, time will tell. That's part of the fun.
Deathshade|EU: So ... Diablo 3?
Knaak: I am not writing for a dead world ... but a world with dead. 'nuff said!
....
G-WiZ: I read the 3rd Diablo series book ... Diablo: Moon of the Spider (about the City of Ureh) ... great stuff ... just want to say thanks for writing these. My imagination blooms from this literature. Go, Zayl!
Knaak:
Zayl has been fun and has a big following. Blzzard has some ideas for him already...
....
Rathi (WCRadio): I know this isnt really "your section" but can we hope to see more, and cheaper artwork, like posters based on diablo?
SECOND: There are rumors circulating on the net of the reliability and truth of the well-known Gamingsteve article...if these are indeed true, then, well its obvious.. so here it is:
(February 3, 2006) It looks like the Diablo III rumor mill has started up once again with a seemingly innocent post on the jobs section of the Blizzard web site. A few days ago they posted a job for an art director and various leads to join "the team behind Diablo I and II" for "an unannounced PC project." I have been getting some inquires since then if Blizzard is indeed working on Diablo III and when is it going to come out? Well, before I answer let me mention a few things. First, I don't want to get any of my friends at Blizzard in trouble, so from instead of mentioning "Diablo III" let's call this theoretical game "Beelzebub 3" and instead of "Blizzard" let's call them "Snowstorm". Second, my information is quality stuff, but it is a little old, so take that with a gain of salt. Third, err, well, there is no third, so let's get into what I know! Let's the obvious out of way, "Snowstorm" is indeed working on "Beelzebub 3". Not only are they working on it, but they have been working on this game for no less than the past four years. In fact, "Snowstorm North" nearly completed the game several years ago, but what they developed just "wasn't fun" and been quietly reworked. This was actually one of the key reasons why Snowstorm North was closed and everyone was relocated to Irvine-based Snowstorm, so that the bigwigs in Irvine could better track and follow the development of Beelzebub 3. As for what to expect in to see in Beelzebub 3, believe it or not but those rumors that were floating around a few months ago about the game were fairly accurate (by the way, I have no idea who started these rumors or where they came from). According to the rumors:
"Diablo 3 takes place in heaven. Hell is trying to take it over and it is AWESOME looking … Imagine the brightness of heaven being taken over by the darkness of hell … Imagine WoW but in a Diablo world in amount of size and playability … Also, guild housing is available in this game for those of you who know about it."
This information was pretty dead-on. It is true that Beelzebub 3 will be done in true 3D and it did indeed look freaking awesome. It is also true that Beelzebub 3 features a story between the conflicts of Heaven and Hell and contains a very cool feature where every single item in the game can change between a "light" version and a "dark" version. However this was also one of the problems with the original version of the game. Other than the ability for any item to visually change from light to dark it didn't affect the actual stats of the item or change the gameplay in any way. So the game has gone through a total rework to inject some "fun" into the gameplay and to make it feel like the Beelzebubs of old. The core gameplay Beelzebub 3 will play pretty much like Beelzebub 1 and 2, but the game world will be much larger and provide a much deeper experience -- many more items, more levels when you go through the game for first time, more skills, more of everything. In addition, the multiplayer aspect will be greatly enhanced from the past installments and don't be surprised to see more than a couple of WoW-based concepts to leak over into the Beelzebub 3 universe ... such as two opposing factions (Alliance and Horde = Heaven and Hell), enhanced guild functionality, and maybe even mounts?! As for when Beelzebub 3 will released, that one is easy to answer ... when it's done. Snowstorm is in no rush to finish this game and will release it only after they feel it's perfect. And after the fiasco of StarCraft: Ghost -- which has been announced for years and is currently going through its second round of redesign and reprogramming -- Snowstorm is in no rush to announce Beelzebub 3. Don't except an announcement until the game is near completion. But there is some good news; that "leak" on the Snowstorm jobs page was no accident. If they are starting to leak information about Beelzebub 3 then they are starting to get closer to a final release. Of course for Snowstorm something "getting close" can mean two years from now. Hopefully that will hold everyone over for the short term. Hopefully Beelzebub 3 will be announced at the next E3, I'll try to find out more before then and give everyone the dirt as I get it.

While Sams wasn’t ready to spill the beans just yet, he did say Blizzard “will have a major product announcement in 2007,” and that Blizzard was currently working on at least three other unannounced titles at the moment.
Paul Sams confirmed there were three unannounced projects. Now we know Starcraft 2 was one of them. The second unannounced game is a World of Warcraft expansion. Servers...? (2006)
Blizzard To Run New Servers on Opterons
Occasional DailyTech writer and President of VoodooPC, Rahul Sood, has some fairly exciting news from Geneva this week. Sood claims Blizzard just purchased 1500 Opteron servers specifically for World of Warcraft world and instance servers.
I am guessing Blizzard will combine the power of these servers to improve the gaming experience for World of Warcraft users worldwide – as well Blizzard may also be preparing for their next major online game. Perhaps they are preparing for the next generation Diablo or something of the like.
Blizzard anticipates releasing an expansion pack to the wildly popular MMORPG within the next few months. The company has come under continuous scrutiny after its servers have crashed due to end game content and increasing populations. It's still unclear as to whether or not Blizzard will adopt these servers to replace the existing fleet of several thousand machines world wide, or if the new servers will just host new content and worlds.
There is also speculation of the clues about what codename Blizzard has given Diablo 3(including some possible plot details referenced to Greek mythology), that thread can be found here: http://www.diablo3.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3406
This is a good summary of the info I think we've all heard. I didnt know about the addresses they registered which is cool. Thanks for summarizing everything

second resource, is more rumor like and from the time that passed looks rather unlikely. Especially with the job openings 2005 (lead game designer) i wouldnt expect its really far in development. Cant be without a lead designer.
And if the 3D environmental artist was hired within 2007 there cant be much to show in Blizzcon either.
you missed 2 more domains, though, that also send you to the BlizzCon homepage:
very nice summary it really puts all the info of this Forum into one place and explains a lot the people that haven't heard about all of this information.

That's the weird thing, the starcraft2.com domain they had for years.
Now 1 month and half away and they still haven't worry about the main domain for diablo3.com.
This could be bad or nothing, maybe everything is already set.
They could get it anytime. But think of it this way. If they made one of the major Diablo 3 fansites use another domain cause Blizzard gets it, its like saying "we're about to announce Diablo 3". Blizzard usually creates a hype before they do so. At the time they decide to announce the game, we'll probably get another tomain instead.
well, there is a rumor concerning the blizzcon picture,
here and on the other posters, diablo is sort of looming in the background, whole the others are well illuminated and in front of Diablo. i dont give much credibility to this rumor, but it sort of makes sense. maybe they're going to pay special attention to diablo this time around.

Maybe not this year, but not like never. I'll stick to the idea that Blizzard never gave such clues that early so i dont expect them to do so now (thus i dont believe the rumors that are supposed to come from Blizzard). But if theres something in it, we'll get either a confirmation that there will be an announcement in BlizzCon 2007 or something like a countdown or statements like the ones they did before the WWI.
Well if they really wanted this domain name Diablo3.com they would get it at the very last moment before the announcement (or even after) so that they wouldn't spoil their big surprise... getting it too would be a kick in the teeth for Blizzard

There is also speculation of the clues about what codename Blizzard has given Diablo 3(including some possible plot details referenced to Greek mythology), that thread can be found here:

And if the 3D environmental artist was hired within 2007 there cant be much to show in Blizzcon either.
you missed 2 more domains, though, that also send you to the BlizzCon homepage:
http://eu.diablo.com
http://us.diablo.com
also about the servers, they could have been for the StarCraft II (battle.net replacements) and WoW (Outland and extra instance servers).
there are enough clues to lead to the conclusion that its in development atm. We just dont have it said by Blizzard yet.
again, very nice

I actually didn't know about Blizzard registering those domain names... haha, hell it seems kinda obvious from that, that D3 is infact being made...

They don't own it... Yet.
Also, at http://www.legendarypictures.com/index.php , if you look at movies in development... Diablo was added. =D
That's the weird thing, the starcraft2.com domain they had for years.
Now 1 month and half away and they still haven't worry about the main domain for diablo3.com.
This could be bad or nothing, maybe everything is already set.
here and on the other posters, diablo is sort of looming in the background, whole the others are well illuminated and in front of Diablo. i dont give much credibility to this rumor, but it sort of makes sense. maybe they're going to pay special attention to diablo this time around.
This totally makes sense.
IF they dont announce D3. Then there won't be ANYTHING on Diablo. Nothing.

Hmmm....I think you might be on to something. It looks as if more information will be coming soon. Maybe the movie will connect with a game announcement?
OR....maybe the Diablo movie will be the big announcement at BlizzCon? OR...both will be announced? Possible....
I hope the movie is NOT the big announcement....
Game...ok
Game + movie...ok
movie...
