From the demo and other articles I've read, Blizzard has taken a lot of ideas from WoW. Hopefully, developers teach a paradigm, or scripture, in which the of value in money maintains its purpose. I sit here and ponder. . . Only time will tell.
I can only hope they haven't taken too many ideas...
I'm sure gold won't be the whole economy like in WoW if they did that it'd be WORSE than WoW because there are no bound items. So that means the best items in the game could be bought with gold.
I hope they find a happy medium where we can trade items in some cases and use gold for some lower-mid level items.
What will give value to gold is items for sale from vendors that are comparable to the best rares and uniques. Which I don't see happening honestly.
Well I just want to be able to purchase low-mid level uniques/rares/set items from people using gold. I expect high end stuff to still be item trade hopefully.
That way when I start I don't have to have a good item to get a good item, I can actually save up gold for it.
The way I see it, you will sell gold to a common trader in each act, and there will be a progress bar. When that bar fills up, you will get a re-specification point, so you can redistribute your skills.
If they make the beginning of the game tough enough that you need to invest in low level skills from the start, then re-specification will be necessary to build the best possible character, so you can withdraw large amounts of gold from the world by allowing this respecification.
For each additional re-specification point, you need more and more gold (or there is a limit) and whilst people are searching for the perfect build of a character, they will need gold, especially in the latter stages of the game.

I would LOVE to see trade caravans with rare and unique items that have a % chance to spawn every time you make a game. Something real low like .01%.

That would make gold worth something
It would also make Chinese farmers very happy.
Immediately forget time-grinds and low percentages per game creation as valid mechanics.
I also think vendors should never ever sell items that anyone might consider including in his regular build. I would only approve of overpriced sets of useless items with a certain elemental resist modifier. Like a plate set of plain items that gives you tons of poison resistance. It's stupid to walk around in it, but may come in handy with some encounters. Or think of some relatively useless weapon in D2 that grants your sorc a usable spell in a school of magic she doesn't have, and so means to dispose some essential monster with nasty immunes if you are patient enough and are willing to give up your better weapon for that fight. Just some ideas for useful purchasable items without any zing.
If it is people will need to grind gold to get whatever that thing is they are spending the gold on. So you will get on and be like "Ok I need 500000 gold to buy (whatever)" Then you will find a good place to grind gold. Do it for a few hours, buy (whatever).
I liked Diablo 2 because you could get on for 5 minutes, do 1 run, get lucky as balls and gain serious riches or you could play for 5 hours and not get much. Just like gambling, you could buy hundreds of lotto tickets and get nothing, or buy one and hit the jackpot. Gambling is addictive because of its reward vs. time. If you THINK a big reward COULD BE just around the corner, it is addictive and thrilling. If you KNOW a small reward IS just around the corner, its boring.
If you liked grinding gold to get a flying epic mount in WoW I probably haven't convinced you though, and I probably never will.
I had a suggestion a long long time ago that would make gold important, I believe it went a little like this:
In Diablo 3 there should be a stash rental service that requires you to make a monthly/weekly payment based on the size of your stash.
1 page of stash stash = free
2 pages = 3000 gold
3 pages = 6000 gold
4 pages = 12000 gold
...
If you cant make 2 payments in a row you lose your extra stash pages, the items on your removed stash pages are auctioned off. Which means, in order to get your items back, you have to be the highest bidder. Auction games would only be privied to 8 people. The person that lost their items would be the one that makes the game, then people are free to join and bid. but there must be more than one player for the auction to begin. This would put a heavy emphasis on gold. It would also mean that in order to take a break from the game you would have to build up enough money to do so [insert blizzards evil smiley face here]
The second part of that idea wasn't part of my original idea, I just came up with that on the fly.

Pasting this bad boy all over the place, eh?
First off, more upkeep costs isn't exactly what people are looking for, I don't think. People don't want to turn this game into a chore, they want an easy currency to make trading straighforward and easy. Second off, the auction idea is just plain whacky.
if you want gold to be worth something go play world of warcraft
diablo is an item based trading economy, any true diablo player will want to keep it that way... dont fix something that isnt broken
the item trading is better becuase of no set prices....you can rip people off as well as be ripped off yourself its part of life. keeping gold out will keep from having so many newbs as well as focus on your trading / haggling skills, instead of farming gold..

DIABLO = DEVIL its not supposed to be a nice game autostats are rediclous lack of pots is not welcome if it aint broke dont fix it! (diablo2)
Why having any gold at all if it doesn't have any purpose? Why even giving gold to NPCs to repair your gear when you could just pay in pgems/sojs/high runes lol.
I don't necessarily see gold as the new currency in D3 but you should just at least be able to get something from a big pot of gold (somewhat like pgems). Also if gold is going to be important it will have to do a lot more than allowing you to buy pots and do other petty stuff.
A better Gamble system, NPCs that enchant/socket your gear are only a few examples of how gold could easily become more important in D3.
You can't avoid things like d2jsp. People will buy Diablo 3 gold with money. People will buy Diablo 3 items with money. Whichever is the economy, people will buy it. You can't avoid those people and/or situations. Medieval times were focused around items, but gold puts a more solid price on stuff. I really don't care.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
They need to make a copper, silver, and gold system where gold is hard to get while copper is the easiest.

Yup. Gambling was a good prospect though it didn't really pay off enough in my opinion.
Maybe we'll see a real expensive respecing cost since some people want it and Blizzard seems to be pointing at putting it in.
and
yes
gold should be worth something more
and have some currency to make trading a lot easier
and taking ideas from wow is not a bad thing
wow is a great game
im not a wow fanboy or nething but taking some good ideas from your own games is o.k
Say for instance, everyone gets 1000g at the beginning. Health potions costs 25g and armor upgrades 100g (though you wear only 7 pieces).
Now, say you start with no money and mobs drop low amounts, roughly 2-5g per everyother mob. Potions cost 50g and armor over 1000g.
Producing this style of control on a larger scale could stabilize or collapse the economy. Finding that medium is the key.
Which example gives you more value per gold piece?
--This is hypothetical so don't quote me on this--
Say you buy the item from the NPC for 2000 gold, but it only sells back for 100 gold. Something like that.
